I would have though SH1 would be the fastest

SH1
Take a detour to quieter road:
- Huntly - Ngaruawahia through Hakarimata Rd by the Waikato river, or SH1B from Taupiri to Hamilton direct to Cambridge bypassing Hamilton city (saves about 30 minutes).
- Cambridge, through Mangakino, either straight to Taumarunui through the National Park; or to Turangi and then to Desert Road (rejoining SH1).
The rest is basically SH1.

Tis the easiest and the one I use when forced to tintop it. But there are a couple signposted turns along the way - don't miss them or you'll end up in the 'burbs of hamilton which is a fate worse than being roggered by a billy goat on acid.

True.
I've visited a quadjillion towns and cities all over the world and Hamilton was the only town I did not seem able to find a direct route out of.:(
"Hotel California" came to mind half an hour after trying to get out.
(I never met said tripped-out billy goat but I'll gather it's not the most fun thing to meet him...:buggerd:)

Turn right at the BP Ngaruawahia, follow the sign posts to Otrohanga, then Te Kuiti, Taumaranui, National Park, Oakuni, Waiuru thn follow State Highway 1 to Welly.
Not only is this way about 35 kays shorter than travelling down through Taupo, there's less traffic and far less towns so you make better time. Be sure to have some overtaking power though as there's also less passinglanes and if you get stuck behind something slow, you're fucked.

The trashman speaks the truth. Plus, the gig between Te Kuiti and Tauramanui is fookin sweet:cool:

Ditto. I used to go this way quite a lot but hadn't done it for a while when I got lost and ended up in Hammyhole (truly a fate not to be wished on your worst enemies). Still can't work out which turning I missed.
