View Full Version : Cops on Ponsonby Road

For those in Auckland you will know that the speed limit was reduced from 50kph to 40kph earlier in the year.

Today, hardly a car on the road but there were 2 highway cops on patrol.

I know the speed limit is 40kph, however, this has to be a classic case of revenue collection which I normally don't debate about....the cops know that people still do 50kph...which to be fair is still not a dangerous pace (and was obviously acceptable for years before)...they know a quiet road will lull people into doing more than 40kph...

The thing with Ponsonby Road is that it was the idiots who failed to give way or swapped lanes etc...that were the problem and it has never been a fast road because there are loads of traffic lights to slow things down.

Anyway, just watch out if you have to use Ponsonby Road

Being Auckland and more particularly Ponsonby road I would say the former, so mince along carefully.

Which part of Ponsonby Road has been reduced to 40km/h? I'm guessing near the cafe's etc I used to live there in the early nineties, then saw the light and moved back to the mainland:2thumbsup

Somewhere out on the East Cape ish (rode through too many towns to remember which) as we were leaving the main centre, and it was still a 50, a car up ahead sped up, and the couple behind it. Coming the other way was a cop, on goes his lights and pulls the U in front of us.

As I'm pointing out the speed camera on the other side of the road, the next two oncoming vehicles were also marked cop cars...

ain't never seen that in dorkland!

Well bugger me! Me & the misses were just up there last week, just before Christmas, never saw a 40km/h sign anywhere on Ponsonby road??? Didn't really matter, shit loads of traffic prevented any speeds over 40ish anyway.

Beg to differ.

The Ponsonby Rd speed limit was reduced after a number of fatal vehicle vs pedestrian crashes. And, unlike the new 30kph limit on Queen St, the 40kph limit is well signed and there's no excuse for not being aware of it.

Light traffic in holiday season is an excellent time for not-very-aware people to be wandering around on foot, so I'd back the idea of some traffic policing along there.

If indeed that's what they were doing. If I recall correctly, all the cop cars are being painted in the blue and yellow colour scheme these days, so they could well have just been general duties sorts driving the beat.

There is loads more foot traffic than there is now...there are no cops then...pedestrians along here are never aware at any time despite numerous islands........probably find that the fatalities were not due to excessive speed..just pedestrians taking chances which failed....

At 8am many shops are closed..even some cafe's...a lot of people on leave and probably in bed....so no reason for more foot traffic at this time....

They were Traffic Cops

Do they wear different uniforms these days so the general public can tell the difference?

It's funny how they say they need to make things safer for pedestrians when in my experience it is the pedestrians that need to slow down...1 pedestrian was hit by a bus...

There are more than enough pedestrian islands for pedestrians but they are rarely used.

This is a 2 lane carriageway so pedestrians need to be more careful and look and wait rather than rushing...often see pedestrians darting between traffic....

To be honest I didn't, but it was dark mind you. I am normally a very spacially aware (person) driver. I guess I was concentrating more on driving as it was rather heavy traffic & I was trying to be a good tour guide & pointing out all the points of interest. I've lived in Ponsonby & sold many a property there so know it quite well just wasn't looking out for signs to tell me what speed I should be doing when I couldn't get above 30 or 40 anyway.

That I have to agree with, having lived in Auckland for 10years I can honestly say Auckland ped's have a fucking death wish, the amount of times ive had to either slow or stop due to one just walking out in front of me is astounding. I was telling the misses this while we were driving around, not more than 30mins later some clown just walks out in front of us

I agree....in this Country they never seem to address the real problem and instead reduce the speed limit for cars so whilst pedestrians will still be allowed to behave the same, the hope is that lower speeds means some pedestrians may get lucky...if a pedestrian walks into a car do they get prosecuted...

Agree that motorist should be on the look out, however, humans can out sprint any car over the first few metres....humans have amazingly quick reactions so in the blink of an eye a standing pedestrian can just appear without warning....

As much as it astounds me.....no. On more occasions than I care to remember I have laid to witness Auckland ped's blindly walk out into traffic only to glance arrogantly at the driver as if to say "I know you will stop so i'll just keep walking". On some occasions I have been soooo tempted to give them a nudge but it just isn't worth the hassle with troglodytes such as these.

Nothing more fun than making the pedestrians run.

They arrogantly step out as you get a green, long after they had their phase. I see how quickly I can get to the other side of the intersection, and, as a byproduct of the process, they also start their own race to exit the intersection
