Anyone here know much about tinnie boats?
Im looking for something to go fishing - Normally just me / wife or a mate.
Im looking at this:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Boats-marine/Motorboats/auction-261026022.htm
What I have found is that the Yellow finn boats were made by the guy who made / started Bluefin boats in Silverdale.
When he sold Bluefin he made 13 of this kind of boat. They are very well put together. The hull is 4mm with 3mm sides - and feels somewhat more robust than a Fryan or a Ramco.
So - if anyone knows anything about Yellow finn (or tinnies) - any help would be appreciated?
What should I be looking for?

I've bene looking at these too. This one looks pretty good actually. They are certainly more robust than the standard Ramco/McLay. Love the underfloor access. The paint looks newer than 1995. The painted tinnies can react badly with the aluminium. This one seems to have been kept pretty well.
$22k will get you a lot of motorcycle. Oops I mean boat. For just fishing, then the tinnies are very good. But they do lack in the comfort department. For your $22k you can get something really comfortable and luxurious that your missus would love and you could do overnight trips etc.
And for not a lot more money you could get a brand new one. A mate of mine just got 35% off a new 5.3m tinnie ($28k).
Good luck.

For that price you'd be able to get a mean as V8 jet boat.

Umm?
1995 built, but the engine is '01 and done 66hrs. How often has that been run? How often serviced?
Firing the outboard up once a month is recommended.
That is a decent underfloor fueltank that would get you around the harbour easily!
Weather protection. The screen and bimini is all there is, if the weather comes up. Should be fine in the Waitemata however. I've seen plenty out there on good days.
Personal thing for me is that tin boats are bloody noisy when sitting at anchor with waves slapping on the hull.
Keep us informed on this one!

For that price you'd be able to get a mean as V8 jet boat. And jet boats are a LOT more fun.. By a long shot. I had a jet boat for a couple of years, and going back to an outboard would be like driving a car compared to riding a bike.
These look cooler, are great at the lake, are really comfy to sit in, are great to fish from, safer around kids, have more room, and they corner like a demon.

They make a lot of noise. Not too sure what kind of fishing ya into but anything dropped on to the hull or any kind of knock and the sound will scare most fish away. Don't mean they aint any good but ya gota bear this in mind when out on the water.

looks like an ok boat with plenty of extras.....
what sort of conditions are you planning on using it in? it has relatively shallow vee on hull so won't be as comfortable in rough water as a deeper vee hull. However the flip side is it will drive easier and use less fuel.
motor looks good..........service history? get it checked first.
good luck

You seem to miss the point that I am looking for a fishing boat. No, you miss my point. Boats don't only do one thing. If you want fun and options, at least have someone demo a jet boat and see what I mean. Why have a boring boat that only does one thing?
That is my suggestion anyway. Take it or leave it. I'm only trying to help. I have had both outboards and a jet boat and fished with the open-cockpit jetboat extensively and found it far more comfortable (look at the seating), far more fishable (walkaround), far safer (near zero draft doesn't get hung up on river bars, no prop), MUCH MUCH more interesting (pulls big g force in corners, tailwalks, spins, jumps off waves like a big dirtbike..)
Seriously mate, it makes no difference to me what you get, but think about it.

lake
river
over a bar?
how far from land?
want to overnight in it?
i would try for an aluminium pontoon boat stable at rest
four stroke motor newer the better and he max recommended horsepower
you cant have to much
but i think for the amount of dollars they want for that you could do better

I can't help you with a Yellowfin but I have a Fyran 440 from the 90's with a 50 hp Mercury and it's great for 4 people. Easy to launch on shallow ramps or the beach. I will tell you about Dolphin Aqualisers though! These are fold-up stabilisers (http://www.aqualisers.com/) which fold down when you're stationary and they're VERY effective. I really recommend them on any small tinnie.

hey mate,
firstly, for a tin boat i would buy a lazercraft or AMF. considering your budget a lazercraft such as http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Boats-marine/Motorboats/auction-261170527.htm
go have a chat on fishing.net.nz and you will find all the info, and alot of help on offer.
i wouldn't own a pontoon boat if someone paid me. they are fucken horrible.

Yep I recommend a Fyran.
Over 20 years on and my old man still has his and the 25hp Yamaha motor.
Only fault is the perspex fade on the screen - which happens on most boats of that age

Yep:2thumbsup. Mine's cracked and really needs replacing but just before Xmas, I went over the screen with Brasso and then Pledge polish. I was surprised just how much oxidation it removed.

Have to admit I'm not a fan of tinnies. They are durable and light to tow and don't need a lot of motor, but they are noisy. My preference would be something like this...
