If you're going to Westport, then you could turn right and head up the coast.
You have to come back that way...
We went to a wedding at Gentle Annie a few years ago.
http://www.gentleannie.co.nz/
Wow! Nice place and nice bar :)
Or much further east..., Banks Peninsula?
Purau Bay, Port Levy, Pigeon Bay and up to the Summit Rd.
Either turn left and follow the Summit to Akaroa for supplies and Flea Bay for lunch..., or turn right and end up at the Hilltop Tavern.
From there you can take a 4WD down to Little River, up Harmans track and back to Port Levy.
It's a great ride :)

whats the inland kaikoura road like?Fabulous! One of those 'hidden gems' under-rated etc etc.
There's also a few stunning little roads around the southern half/end, eg Leader Road.

Comment 1: You are a wanker for getting in more riding in my own back yard than me.
Comment 2: Welcome to stop by for coffee / repairs etc if needed.
Comment 3: Me and Zerax are aiming to do Moles / Rainbow loop in a day, prob Sunday (unless Z jumps on board with the JMJ Adv Train).
Idea: If absolutely necessary, I could offer my shed to house the Silver Beast down here for you. You could come over anytime and ride it in the South Island...just trying to save you $ on the ferry Xing is all, ... honest :shifty:. I'd even start it up and take it "round the block" once a week for you...

Joe, if you're doing the Brunner Road, it's all sealed thru to Jacksons, but there is a nice little excursion to the left, up to Lake Hochsetter which is worth it. Just don't stop for long or the swarms of sandflies will relieve you of about 6 pints of blood in seconds.
Would love to join in for the whole ride, but I'm bloody working the weekend again. Could be keen to do the Molesworth on Friday, will get back to you.

Hi Guys, Happy New Year just got back from 10 days in the SI had the BMW Rally in Twizel. You will have a lot of fun I am sure. This is what we did. Blenheim to Reefton via Molesworth and dont forget Taylor Pass out of Blenheim. Reefton down Highway 7 to Ngahere and turned left stay on that road until you find to no exit sign and just before turn right gravel you would be heading for Inchbonnie then Jackson you will have travelled past Lady Lake & Lake Poerua then on over Arthurs Pass and turn right at Lake Lyndon and down through to Lake Coleridge head down from Lake Coleridge to the Rakia Gorge turning right onto Zig Zag road which brings you out at the Rakia Gorge Bridge then you are not that far from the East Coast. We stopped at Pudding Hill Lodge from there we went to Twizel did Black Forest Station / Benmore to Kurow and then back through Hakataramea back to Twizel for the rest of the trip it was sightseeing so we set of from Twizel past Lake Hawea to Hast and up the West Coast to Fox Glacier then through to St Arnaud from there back to the Picton what better way to have a break. Ride Safe and have fun regrads GSers

Joe, I'm keen to do Molesworth with ya on Friday, I've almost finished twisting the cooks arm to let me go for half a day, just about have her convinced it's a great idea.
Otherwise I'll be grumpy all weekend, good enough trade off eh?
Pm me your cellphone number, I'll be in touch Thurs evening to arrange meeting you in Blenhiem on Friday morn.
Weather here is kinda drizzly, shitty, and humid. Supposed to piss down tonight and Thursday, then clearing on Friday. The Molesworth will be hard and fast, no dust for you to choke on following me:laugh:
I will have to gap it back up the Rainbow to get home Friday avo, bugger a 500km day trip, hate that. :woohoo:

Course there is.....I rode it with Aslan mate....:) Geez...
From the Ashley Gorge head North, but for your Itinerary, do it from Hamner, head down toward Oxford and then you will be riding Okuku Station through the forestry, then it will take you to Taylors Pass Rd. It has great scenery and some of the straightest roads you will ever see.....
I would imagine you could hit 180 plus if your balls are big enough..:) Till it heads up into the hills and twists and turns!

Joe, Taylors Pass Rd in Blenhiem starts as Maxwell Rd in the centre of town, then continue until it becomes Taylors Pass.
Last fuel stop is Blenhiem until you get to Hanmer, unless you backtrack to Seddon (down Awatere Valley) which is just an unneccessary detour.

I met with boys with Jatz in Blenhiem yesterday morn, had a leisurely brekky there, and headed off over Taylors Pass then down the Awatere Valley into the Molesworth. The weather was warm, almost muggy, with some good sunny patches so heading off promised to be a good trip.
The boys were blown away with the scenic splendour of the place and were in awe of the wide open mountain valleys.
Photo stops were frequent, so hopefully they got some good pictures themselves to do it justice.
I found myself out the front a bit too frequently, from knowing the roads somewhat better and really enjoying opening up the DRZ on the tighter stuff. I got a bit too far ahead and had a lucky break getting through a NZ traffic jam easily (large mob of cattle being moved) and after the obigatory nod to the hottie on horseback follwing the cattle, I was off again. The roads had been packed down nicely with the previous days rain, so were primo to ride, and with no dust to worry about I enjoyed leaving some good black snakeys exiting corners down the road.
I waited for a while at the Molesworth homestead camp, and with rain clouds looming on the horizon I geared up for the rain which had started to fall. Signed in with the DOC book for Molesworth vistors and left a note for Joe and the boys if they decided to sign the book... hope you boys got my note:niceone:.
I made the decision to crack on with the pace from there, so to complete my 500km round trip to Nelson, which included the Rainbow road. Absolutely loved the fast pace through the Molesworth, and had many a flashback of the Dakar vids, which probably WASN'T a good thing, I was all gee'd up for hooning. Came round one tight right hander to find Carlos Sainz had rolled his 4wd down a bank and his ute was lying on it's roof. Someone else was giving assistance, he'd banged his head but was still walking around so can't have been too bad. I was surplus to requirements there so waved them a cheer goodbye and was off again.... besides I was the one getting a wet arse on the bike. It was really pissing down by this stage, and my kevlar pants were officially deemed non waterproof.
The Frogman was now fully baptised by this wet ride and had come to love this part of his love/hate relationship with wet riding. Sticky, clingy pants, soggy mx boots, soaked hand yes, but with warm torso and dry upper body I was happy enough, and the warm summer rain didn't make windchill an issue. I was well impressed with water beading off the mx googles and absolutely no fogging.
Got to Hanmer via Jollies Pass which had some serious water running down the road, fuelled up there, scoffed a quick Cookie Time bar (favourite snack for wannabe Dakar riders) and was off up the Rainbow via Jacks Pass. Had to show a few 4wd'ers how to ride the rain and road verges, because the blind buggers never seem to watch their mirrors on those roads. Made really good time through there to the SH63 intersection, well under 2 hours, actual time is a closely guarded secret for fear of retribution. The final road stretch from Tophouse road to Nelson was the only non-event, I chose to stay on the seal rather than detour through the forests as time was ticking on and the thunder and lightning was coming on strong. Since I was already a long time wet rat, I found myself laughing at a bunch of Harley riders heading out of town as I was on my last 10kms to home, maybe water had got into me and short circuited my wiring, I was delusional in the rain and lovin it.
Thanks Joe, Dave, and James for the company while it lasted, and hoped you enjoyed a hot shower and a few bevvies in Hanmer. Good luck today with the rest of your ride. Gotta love a road trip:niceone:

The boys have headed into Rainbow this morning, but suspect they may have to turn back if the rivers are up. A text from Joe at 9:30 said 'It's really pouring down'.
CrazyFrog

They should get through the Rainbow okay, the rivers weren't too bad yesterday although a lot of gravel has moved around in the fords, they'll just have to watch where they put the front wheel.

Hey Junkwomanjoe and junkmanjoe........ I hope his trip down south isn't like mine and Cary's from a couple of years ago where it was wet and cold (even some snow) for alot of the trip with everyone saying "you should have been here last week - It was 30 degrees!". And that was in february. They went back to drought conditions the week after we got back. Here's some summer shots I took while down there.........

I got home a couple of hours ago after bailing on the lads in Westport, great ride back up through the gorge, I think I even scared a harley rider when I shot past him on my little chook chaser, and I can confirm that the T63 hangs on in the corners on seal, most of the time
Was a long day yesterday, somebody decided they wanted to go to the end of the road @ Kohaihai even though it was getting dark and the cloud was getting lower. Was a good ride up, but it was dark when we got there so we couldn't see a damn thing, the ride back was...... ummmm.....welll......ahhh...... yeah..... nah....
Unfamiliar twisty road, thick fog mixed with drizzle, in the dark, through some primitive west coast rain forest over a hill.I was trying to keep the 9fiddy in sight while looking out for the T.A. behind me. Non of us seemed to be enjoying it at the time.
I'm sure JMJ will have a ride report when he gets home so I'll wait for him.
In the mean time here's a teaser....
#1- I took the lads for a look up Mt Rochford above Westport :devil2::clap:

If you get a chance, the ride down to Haast is fantastic and if you can get down to Te Anau the ride up to Milford sound is just jaw dropping.
MagicFairy and I got back from a lazy camping trip in the Nelson area.
My back injury has come back with bells on and wasn't able to do much riding. :(
Did managed to test out our new camping cooking gear and play how much can I fit on a GS thou :)

Hi Jim hope your back comes right ASAP. You are right the South Island is a neat place to ride having just had 10 days down there over Xmas
But have any of you been down there in the snow? The scenery looks even more spectacular. I have been down there and hired a Camper in the middle of winter and enjoyed it.
Is anyone interested in a winter ride I was thinking of having a look around the Mount Hutt area. There is good accomodation at a place called Pudding Hill and I was thinking of a day ride up to Lake Heron. I think its height is around 2000 Mtrs depends on the weather alot but plenty of other places to go around there. If I read the sign correctly the last time I went through Rainbow you can get the key to go through there during the off season as well.
Any Interest I may even be able to talk Cathy into bringing the Suzuki 4 X 4 as a support vehicle.

crazyfrog borrowed my camera and raced ahead to snap us on the roads...but i think he raced ahead a bit to far and we didnt see him for the rest of our trip..:bye:
its no mean feat to ride both them roads in one day..
the south island is BIG...:gob:, high mountains.. compared to what we have up here,, when i came back over the tuckers on monday night,,, i thought it was a little small and flat.......
yea we had a bit of rain,, so out came my bright yellows...
James said to me have a go, going up the side of the mountain....
yea why not...
its steeper then it looks in the vid, but i had a ball...
we didnt do a bit of the side tracks, but this time round i wanted to see places we didnt last time.
the run to the end of the road north of west port, wasn't my best idea..
going over the ranges i blew a head light fuse,,,very dark,,
on way back, was darker, raining and a few butt clenching rear wheel lock ups...:shit:
we all just wanted to get back to camp safely..
over all just over 2000kms for me from home to home, i reaily enjoyed what iv seen, the roads ive riden, and the company i traveled with.
