View Full Version : Bikers' etiquette?

skinny

Does everyone do this head nodding thing to other bikers. Its kinda like a secret handshake.

Bit like trucks indicating to one and another on open road driving.

yes im new, Just got first bike and my learners in the last couple of weeks and already had to tell some F&%er that he needs to look before pulling out from the side of the road.

It's great being on a bike on the open road, and bikers heading the opposite way share your enthusiasm (mostly) so expect (and return) a friendly biker greeting! ;)

Hey Skinny - do a search - I believe there is a remote possibility that waving has been discussed previously. May save some smart assed replies.

Welcome to KB - look around and I hope that you find some useful information.

Much has been written on this subject before.

As a newbie, I commend the "search" facility to you. Given that this site has been going for over 7 years, you may be surprised to learn that most things have been discussed before.

You're more than welcome to start threads on any subject you like, but don't be surprised if you find your material gets merged with previous threads.

Has anyone ever come off because they were waving at another biker?

It must have happened at least once. It would be funny to hear the story - if anyone could own up to it happening.

Oh, and welcome to KB skinny.

Welcome to the forum, skinny :)

And blehh about the search thing. If you're not just looking for info, sometimes you just wanna have your own interaction rather than just read someone else's conversation from last year/month/week/yesterday ;)

I tend to nod, or wave if I have plenty of time to think about it, or nothing if I'm too busy concentrating on riding... AND I've never had an off while doing so, but I've had a couple of really crap corners cause I was too busy looking at the bike coming towards me! (Less so these days, but don't spend so much time thinking about whether or not to wave that you forget to pay attention to your own ride!!)

Wave ? Whats wrong doing a full High 5 and loosing your hand at 120k ( 240 if the other rider is doing 120 the other way ) :)

TOTO
3rd January 2010, 23:02
yes, waving whenever possible, nodding if cant wave.

Don't be surprised if no one waves or nods on the motorway as, greater concentration on riding is required in traffic, hence both hands on handlebars and eyes on road.

Welcome to KB.

p.s. Don't forget to wave :wavey:

Nah mate, what you do is jump off the bike and perform a flying high 5 in midair, the impact of the 2 hands causing each biker to do a 180 degree spin around and land onto the other bike and keep riding.

Thou shalt not start a waving thread.
Thou shalt not start a "what 250 should I buy?" thread
Thou shalt not start a "look at my car" thread
Thou shalt not impugn the Moderators for they are the Gods of the KB Universe
Thou shalt not start a "I'm taking my toys and leaving KB so everyone had better tell me how much they love me" thread

Apart from that you can post porn and ask idiots about how to fix your bike wot you broke coz you is an idiot too :2thumbsup: Welcome to KB

I seem to have noticed a trend over the last few months - either that or im just becoming more ignorant.

about 6 months ago i used to get waves all the time and i used to wave back... then slowly the waves started to die down and the head nod came in, I get a lot of head nods now but i havent seen a wave in months :( Maybe its just that people dont like my cbr250 as opposed to my old bike.

Told my mate who had just bought his first bike, an aprilia rs125 not to wave to harley riders cuz they dont wave back to sport bikes, he ignored my comment and did it and got the middle finger salute. :lol

Don't you listen to them Skinny, wave or nod at every biker you see. If they don't wave/nod back don't worry.

If you don't wave, you will be just another car driver on a bike :)

Just remember, all bikers will stop if they see your bike lying on its side at the side of the road, just in case you are hurt.

And if you are not hurt badly, remember this is KB and some of them will only be stopping
to see if they can steal any usable parts to pimp there own bikes with :)

A nice question of etiquette requires adjudication. Yes, about waving. Shut up, waving is important.

Now, I wave to anything with two wheels and an engine. Yes, scooters too. And Harleys. Sometimes they even wave back .

And I wave to trikes . And bikeycops.

But, pootling along last weekend, I was passed , by two of those perverted Spider things, going in the other direction.

The first waved to me. So they must have been sometime bikers. I was so surprised that I didn't wave back. Then the second waved also (they were clearly in a convoy). I sort of managed a have way nod.

So my question is , do Spiders class as bikes for waving purposes? They don't need a class 6 to drive (ride?). Or crash helmets (WTF) . But the two drivers were clearly once bikers, because they waved to me.

Do we wave to Spiders? This is a matter of great and high import, crowned heads and empires tremble in anticpation of the answer.

You need to expand your waving too list to answer this question.

Did they have Helmets used for motorbikes on ?
If the answer is yes, then they have been in a bike shop and deserve a wave.

I will usually nod, but not at 2 particular classes:

1. scooter riders (bikes of vespa type design, RMX/SMX50 etc are all good) as I know they won't see me as they are blind, proven by the abomination of aesthetics they are riding.

2. Harley Riders - have tried a couple of times with blank results so stopped bothering.
