View Full Version : 14th May '05 - KB ride for all down SH22
Motoracer
3rd May 2005, 16:16
So, how about it folks?
It'll be a Kiwibiker ride like the old times down SH22 to the BP in Narawahia and we can decide how long we want to make it depending on the conditions etc after lunch.
Here are some details:
Date: Saturday the 14th of May 2005.
Time: Meet up at 9:00AM and ETD will be 9:30AM.
Starting point: Papakura Autobhan.
Ride location: Lunch at Narawahia through SH22.
All paces are welcome and as usual, I'll still be riding if it's pissing down with rain.

Message below is an update

Righty-ho, looks like we got ourselves a briliant KB ride ahead of us for tomorrow!! :Punk:
Thank you everyone for showing interest, I am sure when you come tomorrow and go on the ride, you'll have an awesome time!
Regarding the weather, Met service says few possible showers in Auckland BUT, we won't be in Auckland. From the look of things, southbound, weather seems fine as it says "Fine in Hamilton with increasing clouds". Sounds good enough to me! :niceone:
As for the numbers, if we have low numbers turning up for tomorrow, it should still be in the 20s, otherwise if we get a good turn out, we are expecting numbers in the 40s (holly crap!). Last time I think we had 40 something bikes as well when I organised that "Noob training ride". If we get into the 50s, this will be the biggest KB ride ever!
Due to the size of the pack, it is obviously going to take a bit of time to get through the ride. So, I am just planning for a ride to Hamilton and then back to Auckland via SH22. I say Hamilton because the BP station in Narawahia is not big enough to cater for such large numbers. We will stop at a point in Hamilton for lunch and fuel up, then we will head back the same way through SH22. People wanting to do their own thing can split up from the main group later on, if they wish to ride on further towards Raglan or towards Waihi. I will however be going back the same way and leading people who are unsure about the route or who are reletively new to riding or people just wanting to stick with the main group and just do SH22 from Auckland to Hamilton and back to Auckland.
Meet up time at the Papakura Autobhan is still at 9:00AM, and then we are aiming to depart at 9:30 sharp! If you are not there by this time you will either missout on the ride or if you know the route, just ride down SH22 and chances are you'll catch us along the way because it'll take time for waiting for the guys at the back etc etc, and as always, we will have rest stops.
Everyone, if you don't have my cell no. it might be a good idea to take it down now. 021 155 9376. If there are any problems, text or ring me. If you are texting, please indicate who you are in KB!

bugger, you beat me to it. I was going to post up another to try to make up for my 'failed' misery last weekend. Oh well, if someone else is organising it, then it should go way better. Happy to help where I can, but I'll be there. If it's raining hard, I may question it as my tyres aren't great in the wet at the moment (need a new front) so wouldn't want to risk it for nothing. Hoping it's good weather tho. I'll be there..
what about splitting off at the layby place we normally stop at, and going down to Raglan instead? Just an idea, I'll shut up..

Don't know where this place is so it wouldn't help me lead other people through if I get lost myself. Is this place a lot more convenient than the Autobhan?
I am just sujesting a ride to Narawahia as of yet. We can decide on either going to raglan or going back the same way or going back through some different route or if you guys are real keen and hard bastards, we can go to Morensvill, Then Waihi, then Whangamata, then Kopu then back through Hunua for a wicked loop ride!

no, it's not an alternative meeting point.
it'd actually be a bit shorter overall ride than making it all the way to Narawahia (???). Have a look here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9804), it's the road that splits off to the coast at the bottom, have a look at the left-hand kink in the road. Down in Raglan is a few pubs for a nice steak sammy, and I think there's a gas station there to fill up too.. I think Quasi should be able to comment on this better than I, but like I said, just a suggestion for something slightly different.
the pic is the only one I've got that might jog your memory. The photo is where we all stopped on the n00b ride and we're all in the lay by, the road turning off the main is the one going down to Raglan, altho I've never done it myself. It's sign posted that way.
that looks like the road that may not be tarsealed all the way. Last time I travelled that road it had about 12km of gravel. Thick gravel at that. would like to know from someone more local if it has been tarsealed. :ride:
You are talking about SH22,it goes to Te Uku,you turn off SH22 turning right at that point where you are stopped....you just think it's still SH22.The REAL SH22 goes to Te Uku...a couple of kms gravel....that's got ya worried now eh?

Oh ok. Sorry, I missunderstood you. I thought you meant leaving Auckland from a different point.
I've heard that there are gravel sections down that way. Have they cleared it up all the way to Raglan now?

Yea, I just found that out while planning another ride last time.
Gravel doesn't worry me since I'll most probably be on the XR with new knobblies. But since I did say a ride for all, it wouldn't be too great to expect everyone to go through gravel as well.
Care to join us, on this one Motu? :niceone:

Quasi and a few others aren't too far away from there, may be they'd be kind enough to go see? If not, I'll find the time to head down myself to go check..

Why not go to Ngruawhahia refuel then out to Raglan for lunch and return on the same road, or if you want a bigger ride go down to WhataWhata then down to the Kawhia turn off (awesome road here) then to kawhia for lunch, total ride time 3 hours one way
or Raglan 2 hours one way

I'd suggest doing some shorter rides first, I'd guess that from west auckland to Ngaruawahia and back would be fairly taxing on your concentration and tiring if you've only been riding a week or so.
Work your way up to it, don't be in too much of a rush to go on big rides or ride fast.
First thing I suggest is finding a decent sized carpark and practicing doing figure 8's and braking. Also you can learn a lot from reading; one book I'd recommend is "Proficient Motorcycling" which you can get from the Waitakere libraries (well, it's out at the moment, but it'd be wise to request it). It covers heaps of stuff, I only read parts of it and it was still helpful.

nah, these guys are pro's at this, so it'll go fine.
The problem on the last ride was that I wasn't prepaired for such a large group and didn't have the right time to think about it and look after the newbies. I also kind of did the bad thing, and 'assumed' a few things which kinda fell flat.
One being that the guys up the front knew about the second-bike-stops rule. This is quite a key thing, something that should have been pointed out before we set off.
I/We also should have clearly agreed the route, and explained it to everyone.
I am glad I said about the stops too. I obviously didn't make it past the first, so I can only assume the second one happened ok, then you all continued on to BP, where I did meet you all. Even after then, things still fell apart.
I am also glad we had the car following, even if it was a guy with no tools and a broken leg. Was an extra bod and a shelter from the rain.
It also helps to have at least one throttle-man. This way, you can delegate and get some much needed help. Most of it is just plain sailing and a nice ride, but that's only if the ground rules and speeches have been made.
Seeing everyone there at that time just threw me off, and on reflection, I can see the error of my ways. I know I won't forget for next time, it's just a shame it went like that the first time!

Hey Matt, That's my fav route as well! We will be going via that way and the ride will be on my lead. This isn't some organised club ride, so people don't have to follow me and they can pass me or whatever but since I put up the idea, I will be taking responcibility of the route and making sure everyone knows where they are going etc.
At this stage I am not in favour of taking the new route to Raglan as it sounds a bit risky for a group ride. If you only have a few small numbers, it is OK to experiment some other time.
I am organising the newbie ride this saturday the 7th of May, but isn't this 22 ride on the 14th next week?
i hope none of you turns up this Saturday thinking it is on..

As Motu pointed out SH22 is actually the route all the way to Te Uke and has several km of unsealed road. The KB rides take the route through Waingaro to Ngaruawhahia (which appears to be the main route when you ride it). The option is then to head down to Whatawhata and out to Raglan via SH23.
The Wises map has SH22 marked straight through to Te Uke.
Yeah, hell of a long way around when the road goes straight there....

Go ahead and go mate. Best way to get better at riding is to ride when ever possible. Don't worry about not knowing the route cause someone will and they will be sure to wait for you when/if you fall a little behind.

Go ahead and go mate. Best way to get better at riding is to ride when ever possible. Don't worry about not knowing the route cause someone will and they will be sure to wait for you ....................when/if you fall a little behind.

You say you got your restricted?? So you're probably ok.....:niceone:
But how much riding have you done?? Not just commuting I hope.
The daily commute into Auckland from Manukau to get to Uni. Panmure roundabout both ways 3x a week. 8km of night riding each week due to youth group. ~900km/month for the past 3 months.
EDIT: Scratch that I just checked the speedo, I've done 3000km in the past 2 months.

And if you're over 25... then I assume you've had a bit of experience on the road...... know what to look out for..... that sort of stuff...

Anyway I'm in unless it hails. I'll probably be the one who misses the BP turn off in the first place and ends up in Hamilton.
EDIT: In response to above post.
Nope, I'm 18. I've done 3000km due to Uni. I only did about 500km in the 3 months before that as I was getting used to riding. I'd had my learners for a month or so before I got my bike, as I decided to wait until after exams. And since I'd spent the past year and a half saving for the bike I could last another month.

EDIT: Scratch that I just checked the speedo, I've done 3000km in the past 2 months. That's a bit of riding you've done there Jeremy. Start coming on a few KB rides and you'll probably double that rate. I've done nearly 6000kms on my newish bike now, only owned that for 7 weeks. I commute to work 5 days a week and usually ride on Saturdays. :spudwave:

I was away over the weekend and now I am back.
I'm keen to do this ride but have to be back in AKL by 1pm. How long is the ride to Ngaruawahia ? If we can get there in a couple of hours it gives me 1.5 hrs up SH1 back to AKL? :niceone:
It depends. Super quick riders can do it under 1 hour and on average it takes about 1hr.30mins - 1hr.45mins to get to Narawahia. As a group, our AIM will be to take approximately 2hrs since there will be regrouping and rest stops etc, provided that there are no other incidents.
I'd say it would be a safe bet for you to make it back by 1.
Should I tag along?
I don't know the route, as I only got my restricted last Tuesday so I haven't even been out of greater Auckland. And I'm not entirely sure if I should just wait for the next newbie ride it's just this is the first Saturday that I've gotten off work since the start of the year.
I wouldn't leave you behind so you won't get lost, don't worry about that. Most of our paces would be a lot quicker than yours because of a number of reasons but most of us doesn't mind waiting at the stops. We all have had to start somewhere, so don't worry. Sutage is coming on this ride as well and he is on a very similar bike to yours so you probably won't be riding all by yourself. If you want any riding help, as I have said earlier, I'd be happy to assist. Just keep in mind though, this route is quite technical and the distance of the ride is quite long. If this is going to be your first ever proper road ride, I'd sujest you take a lot of care. This might be a bit like jumping on the deep end of the pool but you will learn a lot quicker.

Settle Down guys if you have a general ride going on open to all, make some provisions for the slow and new riders, they are coming to get some skills and learn from the experienced riders.
Consider the Fact they will try and keep up with you because they are young and full of testosterone so have a couple of good riders hang back and help them out and make sure they dont go to fast on this challenging peice of road.
I personally will be pissed if I read about another fucking crash, so from Uncle Quasi, settle down on the road and look after the newbies.

OK, something needs to be made clear here. I do like helping out people and I hate crashes just as much as the next person. However, I am only offering my help for part of the ride for a few newbies cause at the end of the day I am there to have fun as well. Specially since road rides are very rare for me (less than 1ce a month). If other people who come are happy to help out with being a guide for the guys at the back, then great! You guys can take turns etc.

An option might be to take the enclosed route on the way down. It is windy but not hilly & the roads are in better nick than SH22. There is very little other traffic.
The full "loop" ( as shown returning via SH22 )from the Papakura Roadhouse back to the Roadhouse is 300kms.

With the newbies, maybe some of the more experienced riders could take turns riding at the back like MR suggested to show the others some good lines, braking distances etc but have a swap over at the stops so they can have a blat as well.
I'm normally around the back of the group anyway, so I don't mind taking a turn (though I wouldn't call myself experienced) riding at the end.

THIS IS A SH22 RIDE! :) This isn't a newbie specific ride or a ride for newbies in particular. If they wish to join us, that is fine. They will be in good hands. However this ride is for everyone to enjoy the great roads through SH22. Thus the ride will not be modified to better suit a certain group of people who are out numbered by the rest (For this ride).

Trust us, the adrenaline rush from doing 22 (even relatively sedately) is a hell of a lot more fun than getting a hangover.

Come straight down SH1. You will PASS a big BP/Cafe/Rest Stop area ON YOUR SIDE of the motorway.
RIDE PAST this area and in another few mins you will see a similar area ON THE OTHER SIDE of the motorway. That is the meeting point.
Take the next exit and rejoin the motorway heading south and you will see the big blue boards with Gas, food, toilets, etc on the motorway until you see the signs for the area.
See you there.:niceone:

You two could meet up with Quasi and then ride up together. Kinda hard to find the entrance to the autobahn if you've never been there before since you actually have to go a fair bit into papakura before you get to a turn around.

cos cyclespot is a big empty space off the road and out of the way of people getting to the shops.. it's just easier. Then when we pull off, we just wait for a huge gap in the traffic and all pull out. If that fails, then the traffic lights will probably be red so you can catch up then, else if it's a really bad start, then you can just speed up a little more and catch up on the motorway. But never had problems before. The wide space just makes it easier to conjour up

Just take the bloody thing off and if a coppa stops you just say too many cages give you a hard time with it and that 70 is suicidal cos cages drive over you thinking that you are doing 110........
Never been stopped before, but if I am that's what I'm gonna tell them.

Just ride confidently, follow the road rules, be a courteous rider and you should be fine......most cops will not pull you over unless you give them a reason.
Wasn't Tristank caught for speeding???
I'm sure the cop must have caught him due to suspicious behaviour.
Cops don't just randomly target people - that would simply be inviting more abuse and make them look more unprofessional than the media paints them.
But then again you guys ride those mini bikes (CBR's)........ so cops kinda figure out that it's a 250 and check you out.

But then again I'm no saint either...... worst crime was doing 105 in my old 88 MR2 in a bus lane during morning rush hour.
Well I was 20, coming from driving old corollas to a MR2, it was all my money and I was over the moon.
Sad thing in a few weeks I ran an orange light and so did an SUV who didn't give me right of way........ her (yeah typical soccer mom) fault so I got my full money back after the car was written off.

OK, another heads up. You have to be able to do atleast 100kmph where safe to do so. If some of you are serious about doing this ride while traveling at a maximum of 70kmph only, you are NOT ready for SH22 or most of the other long distance open road rides for that matter.
If it is the legality you are worried about then trust me, I have done it all from been pulled over, loosing my licence, taken for a ride in the squad car etc etc. Riding without the L plate is NOT a big deal! If you ride with a plate, then do 100kmph on the motorway, then you'd be a dumbarse!
Almost everyone who goes out for rides while on thier 6L, just take their plate off for the ride, then ride sensibly without doing anything dumb and attracting attention from the law. If you do get caught, be honest and upfront about everything else then say that the plate had fallen off or was stolen and you never got around to getting another one. 9/10 times you'll get away with it (just the fine for no L plate).
I said everyone can come including newbies but if you are talking about going only 70kmph max, you'd have to be joking. If that's the case then even the trip down to Narawahia and back will take up the whole day! Come if you are comfertable with doing atleast 100kmph.
As for SH22 not being suitable for newbies. Load of crap. Ask sAsLEX, Two smoker and many many others who did SH22 back when they were reletively new to riding. Nothing went wrong there and for a bonus, they probably became better riders a lot quicker from doing so. People with the wrong attitude towards riding will crash no matter where. SH22 is full of twisty corners, yes but riding bikes for most is about corners. The more you do them, the more you learn about riding your bike.
Anyway, I hope my point was clear and that I didn't put off anyone from coming along.

quite a long ride for those who haven't been riding long with regards to riding fitness etc so keep hydrated good breakfast take breaks etc
plus take it nice and slowly if you're new to 22, note new to 22 not riding, there a few bit to trick the over confident, just ask FF for a re-enactment of Vladi taking the gravel road rather than a turn.

While I agree with you about the L-plate silliness - and that holding back to 70 would be a tedium, do bear in mind (not Motoracer, but those affected by the L status thing) that (a) some of the 250's won't be too happy at much over 100kph anyway and (b) over 120kph on an L license , if you get stopped it's licence losing and bike impounding time.
As a matter of interest , if the ride is 300km, at 100kph steady speed this would take 3 hours . At 70kph this would take 4.3 hours. So the maximum extra time, riding legally, is 1.3 hours but in reality is less because some of the time even the fastest bikes will have to come down below 100kph
If you're exceeding 100kph of course then the difference is according more (no problem myself with someone caning it at whatever over the 100 they think they can get away with :niceone: - just pointing out that the difference is not actually "all day", so if some of the Lplaters do feel uncomfortable about exceeding "their" speed limit they would still finish in a reasonable time. And the 10kph tolerence means they can do 80 legally.)
Have fun ride safe

I am having some troubles with my firewire at the moment (if you want something) worst case scenario its going to be TV quality at 15fps and no sound.
or I lend the tape/camera to BJ or someone who has the setup.
If anyone thinks that I shouldnt even bother bringing a cam (I got harrased at the orewa BP for having one by some slightly wanky bikers) perhaps harrased isnt the right word. perhaps just advice that it was silly (Im only saying that incase it was a fellow KB'r)

actually. Im bringing my bike-cam this time. since im going to be at the back (slowest bike of the bunch) if anyone would like anything 'not recorded' when im behind you then let me know. of course there is stuff on the cam that I will be deleting when arriving at the end anyway so if you want you can get a copy of anything before it gets deleted.
Please bring it.
It will interesting to see me fully off the bike knee in the air 1 foot from the road surface taking 45 corners at 15:Punk:

Ive just done a quick rip off my camera, nothing super. just riding through town at night. but it gives an idea of the footage Im getting on saturday unless someone comes up with another gig of ram and a working firewire card. or I can lend it out easy enough.
anyway. size wise, it came out pretty well.
its mostly uncompressed just a quick divx'ing
zipped it for the attachment reasons. if you want you can try download it from pyrocam.com which is up when im awake or at work at the moment.
(as a rule 8am to 12pm)

If you want to give me the AVI's I have access to gigs of ram and can arrange a firewire port... :)
Like see what happens when people buy new suzukis?! they fall over pretty soon after that, Zapf and Riff Raff come to mind, due to the fact that new and shiny things love to meet gravel and tarseal!

The weather is only for cloudy in Auckland and sun shine in Hammy. :Punk:
Is this gonna be a fast or easy ride?
What time you reckon we gonna reach Hammy? I have to meet a friend in Hammy.

Taking lunch and fuel stop into consideration, ETA back in Auckland should be 1615hrs at the latest. However if everything flows through smoothly, we can probably shave an hour off that time.

three hours to get to hamy through 22?????????????
Wont be waiting that fucken long.
I can do it in about 1 hour on my Gixxer 6 if it's a non stop redlining ride all the way through but from what I've heard from other people's experiences and since we have some newbies comming along as well, I guesstimated a max of about 3hrs taking the rest stops into consideration as well.
How long do you reckon it'll take for the group to get there?
