I've logged hundreds of hours in X-Plane (http://x-plane.com/), and flown several light aircraft (including a stunt plane!). Don't have my lisence yet, been planning for that for a while, but then I bought a bike.. Now I have to decided what next year will be - racing or flying... where's that lotto ticket gone......??
Yes to both questions. Although I'm a pro at neither and haven't flown 'proper' since early last year - so I'd need to build up my hours again before I could fly solo again - I think.
I'm a big FS fan and own all of them (geek!), and various mesh terrain CD's for the UK, oh and Voice Buddy, a motion Tracker, Saitek joystick etc.
Dangerous has the mesh terrain for NZ I believe. He's been promising me a copy for ages. Where is it D?

never had money to be real pilot but have been in alsorts from a TA4K skyhawk to cessnas and a jota (sp?) and a couple of hand built things...

Flight Simulator sucks hugely. Take off, fly around, land, yawn. No amount of "realistic scenery" and cockpit effects help. Yawn.
Now combat flight simulator games, particularly those involving WWII fighters: Different story altogether. God knows how many hundred hours I have on different fighters. I'm still madly in love with the F4U Corsair...

bugger all ot that --sittin in a room pretending to fly.
Do the real thing---Ohhh yea---real men dont need engines
I'm still madly in love with the F4U Corsair...
They had Corsairs (or was it one?) at the recent Blenheim Air Show - mmmmmmmm. I have video footage of their low flying runs over the field too. Bootiful.

hitcher - some simulators have amazingly real scenery (have a look at the Xplane link), plus there's 'missions' to complete, and you have a huge range of aircraft to do all sorts of stuff..
And Frosty, I'd be happy to get out and do it for real - wanna pay for me to do it? I'll fly you around for free if ya did! I'd also fly gliders too..

The F4U1A - my very favouritist aeroplane - fascinating cockpits - no floor so you can stand up in the cockpit with the canopy closed (well, I could).
The one at Blenheim is the only surviving fully intact, airworthy ex RNZAF Corsair, (an FG1-D) from the 380 odd the RNZAF used to have.
I like CFS2 best - got heaps of extra planes, scenery, missions etc.
Il2 is good. I only enjoy the flight sims, with Lockheed Constellations and things , or trying to aerobat 767's

For an example of this, go to Wellington Airport. It's a tarmac strip on grass, with one or two trees scattered about, thats pretty much it

there are people out there that have made photo-realistic scenery for the whole of nz....

Really? Where can I get a copy? I've searched the usual we sites.

this isn't too bad on scenery:
http://x-plane.com/v8shots.html
and buy the whole game (can download the 280mb demo) and there's NZ maps, Austrailia, etc etc.. in similar detail...
FS2001 edit(2000 >_<)... many hours and a gazzillion plane packs to go with it... Favourite plane is the SU37 berkut and P51D.. good fun.
I have flown: takeoff and landing a cessna 172RS on my one and only flight about 2 months ago. I'm also hoping to get my pilots liscence in the semester breaks for uni and go on to be proffessional :niceone: Hard work and a big hole in the pocket/bank though. :whocares:

lol so i am one among many. The realism thing is what the vRNZAF is about. Real people flying with real Air traffic control. Not doing 'missions' as such but there is new software for online flying - google SB3 or FSInn with FS2004 and you will see what im talking about. Makes it all worth while, in fact thats why simmers stay in it.
With the vRNZAF its jus NZ people flying RNZAF aircraft. Formation flying, mock air to air combat etc.
oh well check out those sites mentioned. Also www.flightsim.co.nz
A man by the name of Robin Corn was making A+++ grade photorealistic scenery for NZ (including wellington) but i think he has chucked in the towel. What he did was take high res satelite images (looking at 30-50mb jpegs) turn them from black/white into colour, sets FS to notice the difference between water and land. He would then go through and manually place all the trees/buildings/power poles etc to recreate the scenery to a high level of accuracy giving a great increase over the default setup. Also Christian Stock makes geographic mesh maps for NZ and released a 40m mesh scenery, thats like a 40m topo map turned into 3D.
now if you couple the two together it starts getting pretty realisitic!!!
oh and by the way the corsair is my fav navy fighter
but for the airforce it has to be the P-40 :Punk: :Punk:
real men dont need engines
Damn right. Gliding is way better ! :niceone:

lol good old silent hunter. I had that back in the day. In gaming i lack one thing that real naval commanders have .. pacience
i always used to put it on accelerated time, then i'd run into a hostime ship and before i knew it i didnt have time to line up the torpedos... i seemed to resort to the topside gun, oh and i hated it when the aircraft showed up, that really made my day - and the game very un-enjoyable

love the stealth in SH2 (with my hunt for red october cd on) and the AA action in carrier battles in destroyer command :Punk:
Patience is something you do need though, but I make models, so it's cool :D

Ahh...naval combat! Currently playing Silent Hunter 3 - finally, a worthy replacement for Aces of the Deep!
A few years ago a private company chartered some light aircraft and took photos of every square foot of the UK from around 2000 feet (above terrain level and except restricted airspace).
The primary purpose of this was, of course, to sell on these images to house/land owners, corporations and such like, including FS software company. This company then released a brilliant terrain mesh series of the entire UK.
I can even fly over my old house and landed on my front lawn once. Thank fork the neighbours weren’t in.

How big was your front lawn!!
Edited:
He's just shown me a photo of his front lawn back in the Uk and refuses to post it here because he says he wants to keep his lifestyle etc private.
I think he's just being gay.

Re' your question in an adjoining thread Daisy - I vote you leave now and burn your passport. Jim said he'd carry your bags and go shopping with you, providing he can have a new Prada handbag.
While you're at it buy me a new hat please, my head appears to have grown again.

Fancy burning a copy of the cd, and I will give you happy smiles...
Master & Commander...Hmmm...You sound like you have a plethora of wonderful soundtracks, did I mention Top Gun rocks, fantastic movie. What happens in it again?

I agree, not the same if your not chasing after enemy aircraft or strafing a train. Look at me i've made 10 perfect landings in these 50 knot crosswinds, but how many japanese zeros have you shot down while flying upside down with a broken rudder.

I have my little collection of soundtracks (about 26 now) :D
Well there's two versions of the Red October soundtrack, I think I have the one with less music on it, but still have the main theme :niceone:
Give us your details, and I'll see what I can do (cd-writer has been acting up somewhat)
Shhhhhhh Gareth, It's a sim thread now :D not just flight sims. I have train sim too :whocares: (listen to music with pace for that :))

For a bit of entertainment today, I tried the IL*2 Sturmovik PC WWII Combat Flight Sim, and I sucked. So far the only "kill" I've got is the conning tower is I was trying to take off:killingme Then I found the "Easy" setting. Well at least I didn't have to worry about take-off anymore:whistle: too bad my landings are even worse:whistle:if I can find the airport again :killingme So off I got to do some "Dog-Fighting". Hey, with my landings and take-offs being sooo good, I don't have to worry about getting shot down. They would be doing me a faviour as it would save me from crashing the plane myself:niceone: and I get to "die" a hero:killingme
