Always wanted a XR, don't mind spending a few dollars to get her tip top. Whats the diff between a RE , RF?
Didn't it have blue toolbag?

I had an RE which was the 1984 model. The 1985 was the RF. I don't think there was much difference between them. They were quite sort after in the late eighty's being twin carb. After these models they went back to single carb (don't ask me why). I notice this has a 'non standard' carb.

The bike I had was bullet proof. I gave it absolute shit and it loved it.

Brilliant bike, but a bit long in the tooth (25 years old?). If you're prepared to spend a lot of time on maintenance, go for it. A lot of things wear out in 25 years (rubber bits perish, bearings dry up, etc.)

Have a look at this:

an R model with a lecky leg put in, could be trouble.
Theres a few late 90s XR650ls floating around.

If you're after an XR my mate has a 1995 250 Baja model, electric start, single front headlight, totally bomb proof engine, he's after $3500 for it and you won't have any maintainence troubles of the older model.

The twin carb XRs had issues. When they went well they were great. But most were hard starters, with the twin carbs being a contributor to this. The next yr they went back to single carbs. A lot had issues cracking heads between the valves. The RF got a front disc brake.

Is that front the standard 21" (looks larger).

I had an XR350RE (bit more stomp than a 250).

Thanks for the input guy's.
My budget or should I say our budget, lol, would probably only allow me to get an older model rather than a newer one. From about which year XR will spares like gaskets, seals ect ect still be available?
I would rather be in the garage playing with my XR than watching tv, so general maintenance wouldn't too much of an issue.
Hey dino3310 that XR600 might be ok' but I am about 5.8 in height and weigh in at a staggering 60kg's. Rode a XR500R once many years ago in the dunes and f... she was heavy for me, but loved the power.

Still can't get the styling and looks of the older XR's out of my head though.

Cheers for now.

That's one way of saying it.
The 200/250RE's were grenades.

Anything prior to 1979 may be a problem for parts.

I've got some XR350 bits somewhere...

No prob dino, have to still get a license so 250cc it will be. Pretty much have made my mind up, I will find a XR200/250 road legal somewhere out there eventually. As my previous post indicates money is tight, but will spend many a night in the garage playing with my XR than watch tv, so an old XR I can live with and be happy to maintain.

Dunno.
A handful of spiders can live happily in it for years though.
