View Full Version : Newbie Ride - Saturday 7th May 2005
Ride up Old North Road for the newbies and anybody else wanting a cruise. This is not a ride for the fast people. For the smaller bikes and newbies so that they can ride at a slow pace.
-Meet Shell Station WESTGATE at the end of SH16 at 9:00AM on the 7th of May Saturday. (turn left at the end of SH16 and 300m on left)
-Route is up old north road to Kaukapakapa (so so, not too windy)
-Take a break at Kaukapakapa
-Travel back to Silverdale from Kaukapakapa (not windy road, just 100km/hr) tentative at the moment, depends on the day, if everyone is comfortable might head up to wellsford.
-From Silverdale down East Coast Road to the shore. (not windy road)
-Will stop at Shell at Northcross. From there we will split up and head home.
I am expecting that this ride won't take too long and should finish by about 12:30.
After reading the post regarding group riding, big bikes are welcome but the object of this ride is for the newbies to get a feel for cornering and all that at 100km/hr. So big bikes are more than welcome, but keep in mind this is the main object of this ride. Please be considerate and not speed off, tailgate etc.. Would like some big bikes to come along and help out with the newbies.
Somebody just sent me a rep and an idea. Pair up newbie with a more experienced rider. Experienced rider can give newbies advice, tips etc. Any experienced riders keen on this?
Newbies, this ride is for you, make the most of it. This will give you an opportunity to ride at 100km/hr on a quiet contry road in a group. There will be a few experienced guys there that will go through with you the in's and out's of group riding etc.
IF IT RAINS, IT WON'T BE ON. HOPE IT DOESN'T RAIN
For those interested:
Leave your name / number. So that if anything was to happen, you can be contacted etc. I will leave a copy with an admin as well.
My contact details are 021-899101.

Haha... thats very smart of you u cheeky bastard :D
nah just kidding... yea i'm interested. But if the trip was for newbies i'm assuming u mean the 250's? how do u expect us to ride comfortably on the motorway?? i've never been on the motorway before... and i dont really want to drive all the way from Howick to Silverdale by myself... too scary

We are meeting at Westgate and from there ride up the small roads to Kaukapapa then on to Silverdale (tentative, see how it goes on the day)
If you aren't comfortable, you can meet a few other bikers that live out Howick way and ride up to Westgate.
I am making an assumption that most newbies know how to ride on the motorway. I can't cater for everyone..... :niceone: as everyone is at a different level of riding. It will still be good practise for you to follow another rider on the motorway up to Westgate. You will probably find riding on the motorway scarier than riding on the quiet country roads up north.
Hopefully see you there on Saturday.
Madguitarist! and Limmy will be coming along.

i have no idea where westgate is... and i dont know anymember who live in howick or near howick.. so i think i'll pass this one. I'll need to practise riding on the motorway first i think. :( damn it... i'd love to come along

get to the Southern motorway and head to the city. Take the North Western motorway (16) exit sign posted for Helensville (I think). Ride it to the very end of the motorway, and turn left at the lights. You'll see a 'shopping park', just after this you'll see a Shell station. That's it. Just after the Shell station is a round about, so if you miss it, you can swing round and go back. It's really as simple as that.
If you can make it, I'd recommend it :niceone:
Limmy (if he can make it) is coming from Mt Wellington, so may be team up with him and both go together
i might come down if it's not pissing down...only thing is 9:00 kinda early ...weekend is my sleep in time...but definitely keen...see ya HOPEFULLY... :ride:

I have sent a PM to tristanK and he is down Howick way, he hasn't replied if he is coming. Limmy is in Mt Wellington and he is coming as well. You can meet him then ride up if you wish. That way you can have some practise.
PM limmy.

I didn't want the ride going on for too long. Thats why I thought an early start would be better.

If you're keen I live in Howick. We could meet up somewhere and ride out to Westgate together. Happy to buddy up with you on the ride if you want. Send me a PM.
Personally I think Saturday morning around Howick is far busier (and scarier) than riding the motorway on the weekends. I know 'cause I commute to over the bridge every day. :niceone:

Damn damn damn and damn....
This aint fair guys..... you know I cant make this run....
oh well, you guys have fun and ride safe.....
and whilst you lot are out there having fun, kindly think of me, feeling blardy sorry for myself.... in total agony.... lying in a hospital bed.... wishing I could be out there riding with you lot.
oh and wee reminder to you all.... its mothers day this weekend...
so contact your mum's ok.
:ride: :ride: :ride: :ride: :ride: :ride: :ride:
Won't be able to make it im afraid.. I have a non KB ride with a workmate up to waiwera :weep: on Saturday I have already commited to. (Actually I will try get him to come on this ride :msn-wink: )
Also a damn cos 101 assignment due on the monday after that
Next time I'm definately keen.. just not so keen about the >70kmh speeds we will be doing (Currently sitting on 50 demerits... 25 more wouldn't be too good  ).
To all newbies.. these rides are awesome, my first KB ride I met limmy in Mt Wellington and followed him up the motorway (weird experience as it was my first time 'driving/riding' any vehicle and I have never driven a cage).
The ride went well and even though I couldn't keep up that well in corners (0% confidence), just caught back up with a twist of the zxr's throttle along the straights. Other riders also held back and waited for me.
I ended up overtaking a cage on the outside overtaking lane round a corner, leaning heaps at 120kmh.. by the end of the day! The ride made me so much more confident.
You will meet whole groups of new people in a similar situation, so don't feel left out!
ALL NEWBIES THIS IS A MUST-RIDE!! :niceone:
Cheers for organising it FEINT :D

yo ricksta, no need to stress out bout getting on the motorway. its easier than riding anywhere else. no sharp corners, no stop starts, no hill starts. all you need to do is give your bike some gas and it'll be all sweet.
anyways...i live in mt wellington which is probably bout 15 mins away from your place. i see NinjaBoy is keen on coming as well so we could just meet up at the caltex at Mt wellington and head off from there.
btw...u used the forbidden word "drive"...big slap on the wrist. u DO NOT DRIVE A BIKE.

Yea...saturday morning in howick is a killer. Gotta watch out for all the dodgy asian drivers that got their drivers licence from Mr Lee
btw...saw u on the bridge a few weeks ago just by the takapuna onramp heading south but i was on the outside lane so couldn't catch your attention.

-Route is up old north road to Kaukapakapa (so so, not too windy)
...
Do you mean that we would go up to and through Helensville via Kumeu and then on the Kaukapakapa Rd?
I'll be coming along anyway (gotta scrub in the new Sport Demons), but just want to make sure about the where and when.

No, we head up 16 for a little bit then turn right onto Old North Road and that ends up at Kaukapakapa. Very scenic and a fair bid of twisties to practice your cornering.

I'd be keen on that too as although I've been riding for 20 years I haven't done a ride with KBers yet and the XT suits the slower rides.
So what time at Caltex? I would think meet their at 8 and leave no later that 8:15, sound good?

Well there's only one, just up from the fly-over, and next to Burger King So it'll be fine.
See you guys there.
I have to work Saturday, alas. But I go past the Caltex station on my way, and it's usually about 8:15. Unless I'm running late. If the timing works I'll follow you all down the motorway on the BMW and keep the bastiges off your collective tail . The Great White Whale should deter even the most aggressive cager from trying any aggressive stuff on the L-platers. :ar15:
If I don't see you have a wonderful time, ride safe. :ride: :ride:
Hmm looks like there are plenty of people in Howick now with bikes, me Included, I haven’t made up my mind yet what im doing so I will have to get back. I have my full car licence so motorway driving in a car is fine for me but motorway riding will be my first.

not sure who's posting the pics...
we could've gone further but Feint thought it would be too hard for us newbies because of the very windy road up ahead and its just too far so about five or six guys kept going and the rest went back to westgate...

Well that blew out a few cobwebs. Nice to meet some new faces. Hi Pommiegirl nice to meat a fellow pom (actualy I'm Scottish just sound English) whose into bikes.
After KKpa we turned on the gas and fired up to Wellesfd. Had a sandwhich and hooned it back. Madguitarist I have definetly worn in your right kneeslider, and got some light scrapes on the left. Got knee down at 160kmh which was cool. Hightlight of the day a copper near Wellesford wagging his finger at us as we went past. You naughty boys!
Good weather, good roads, good wheelies and knee down action. What more d ya want?:niceone:

Good weather, good roads, good wheelies and knee down action. What more d ya want?:niceone:Like I said, that cop is one of the "good guys". I waved at him down the hill on the way into Wellsford and recognised him as the Community Constable who helped me immensely last year when I binned my CBR6 on the road to Maungawhai Heads. Glen (SpeedMedic) knows him and phoned him to come and help me last year when he picked me and the 'write-off' up at the scene of the accident and drove me to his house where I used his phone, drank his coffee, and waited with Glen for my wife to come up and collect me in the cage...but that was last year! Anyway, on our way back from having a refuel, drink, and natter we saw Andy the policeman again as he was driving towards us in a 50k zone and he pointed to us - I waved back! I'm glad his brake lights didn't come on, he's a good man. :niceone:
Mr swanman, I enjoyed riding behind you as you practised your wheelstands & kneedowns...and you want to sell your R1 for a cruiser or summat?
Cheers for the company guys. The run back from Wellsford was good fun, don't think the bike dropped below 10k revs the whole way.
Thanks for organising this ride FEINT, it was a great turnout with over 20 bikes! Your Titanium Silver 636 looks hot too. :niceone:
I bowled up to Shell Westgate around 3 mins past 9 and there were about 10 bikes waiting, the rest of the KBr's arrived within the next 15 mins. Mr Feint said some encouraging words, paired some of the newbies up with a 'pro'-partner, had a minutes silence for Flyin, and we were off up SH16.
Wow, what a new experience riding all the way up to Kaukapakapa at under 80kms!! I quite enjoyed it as you get more time to look at the scenery, which one of the newbs did instead of looking at the road!! (I'll let him tell the story if he so wishes)
I hope the new riders who partnered up got something out of it, I tried to ride as smooth lines as possible and demonstrate practical braking methods for my noob...Feint's girlfriend? Wots her name/nick? At one point a fellow KBr got between my noob and I so there was about 10mins where she was following his lines, eh MDU!
'Everyone' got to Kaukop in good time (10.15amish) and 5 of us decided to continue up SH16 to Wellsford...time to lift the tempo a bit! :Punk:
Nice meeting some more KBr's for the first time, MDU, Cary, dveus (good one you for coming up from Papakura), Shade (nice leathers!), THE UMFAAN, pommie girl, Madmax, Slashwyde...and others I've met before, FEINT, Limmy, Madguitarist, swanman, KK, Ricksta, eric (happy b'day again).
Overall it was a great ride with great road and weather conditions - I had NO hairy moments whatsoever and managed to enjoy myself totally (at times on one wheel :msn-wink: ) on a great little 3 hour ride! Now whens the next one? :ride:

Looking forward to the next get together! Can I put an order in for some more gorgeous weather please...

cheers guys! awesome day, enjoyed it.
Sorry couldnt control myself right untill the end but made sure Erik had my bud so i could go for a wee little blat with my old riding buddy shade!! Cheers boys, and everyone else.
Some good smooth riding was demonstrated! Top effort to all i say, and cheers for the company erik/richard and helping cain the old dirtbike this arvo!
Was a fun day -
Cheers to all those who attended. Was good meeting you guys!! Thanks to Feint (nice bike dude!!) and good meeting ya Zed (again, nice bike!)
Everyone rode really well, with only one mis-hap.
Was nice to be able to ride with KK again too, always wicked to watch him pile into corners and lift the front at intersections *grin* :)
Cheers
Shadey
Was a fun daySure was! Hey dude where'd you get your leathers from? Do you know if KBC suits are still available in NZ or on the Net?
It sounds as if everybody had a very safe and enjoyable day (except perhaps for Mr Ricksta, but even he seems not too unhappy about his little mishap) :niceone:
I am very glad.
It is very good to see so many new riders coming along and enjoying themselves. At one point a few years ago I almost thought that motorcyling was a dying art, and that when the present successors to the old farts like me had in their turn shuffled off , or were restricted to wheelie'ing Zimmer frames, the whole mystery would be no more. So it please me no end to see such enthusiasm from the new riders, and such helpfulness from the older hands. [Shuddup you pompous old fart :whocares: ]
Unfortunately, I was late for work this morning (as usual) and by the time I nana'ed past the Caltex station the East Auckland contingent had all gone, so I did not get to say Hi.
Maybe next time
(As I write Li'l Rat Bike is scrabbling about my ankles, diving between my legs, yammering away , "Can I go next time ? Huh, Huh ? Can I go? Take me on the next one , Huh, Please, please, I wanna go too. Can I go next time, please, please , lemme go on the next one. :ride: :ride: :ride: "
We'll see. Oh shuddup for Heavens sake)
Glad you guys had a good ride. Would have joined you but I had a prior engagement. There are few things that take priority over riding, but earlier in the week I broke a tooth and spent two hours today in the dentist chair having a crown preparation plus another repair. I must say that modern dentistry makes the procedure quite tolerable, apart from the painful extraction of megabucks from your wallet at the end...

Sure was! Hey dude where'd you get your leathers from? Do you know if KBC suits are still available in NZ or on the Net?
mt eden m/cycles have a couple of two piece suits in stock atm...
edit: just remember he got a sale for both jacket and pants @ 550 (i think that was for leather not textile, but cant be sure)
Yep, it was a good day. KK, no worries with leading Sutage on the way back. Hopefully I went at about the right pace. I made sure I slowed down quite a bit on the downhill twisty bit at the top of Old North road on the way back.
For the newbies on the ride, I highly recommend the BRONZ riding course. It teaches road placement skills and gets you to practice handling the bike, doing figure 8's, emergency braking, weaving between cones - all good fun and good for building confidence, skill and a familiarity with your bike. Even just practicing some of the stuff in a carpark on your own can be helpful, or if you want tips on exercises to try, take a look in "Profficient Motorcycling" which covers a fair bit of the stuff in the BRONZ course. That said, riding on the open road requires skill you'll only get by practicing on the open road (or a track, I guess?).
KK, thanks for letting me have a go on the dirtbike :D I hope you've got the handlebars straightened after my off... ;) What did I actually do? I just remember the rear sliding around a bit and not being able to keep it upright, I guess my brain couldn't keep up with what was happening.
It was really different to riding my roadbike. Riding back home I was missing the peaky powerband of the two stroke (not to mention the extra grunt) and trying to slide the rear...
Anyway, it was a good day and great to meet a few new people and catch up with others I already know. :)
Sure was! Hey dude where'd you get your leathers from? Do you know if KBC suits are still available in NZ or on the Net?
Hey Matthew,
I got mine from Mt Eden about 9 months ago i think. They were 1299 retail, and they ended up doing an awesome deal on them for me.
Worth taking a look i reckon.

yep had a great day, first ride, improved my riding a lot, not bad for 3 days biking :D
thanks to KK and erik for going slow for me :D]
and thanks to FEINT for organising, oh also thanks to all the experienced guys who helped us newbs out, you guys rule :Punk:
thanks to all for a great day!
hope to do it again very soon, thinking about maybe coming on next weekends one if i can pull together a band of newbs :ride:
Since there is a few of you living in howick including me - how about going south this time to KawaKawa Bay and doing the rounds around that area.
good stuff feint. good ride and organisation. pairing up was a great idea. riding along old north rd at less than 80kmh was definitely a new experience. never knew there were farms out there.
yea...let do a ride south next time. we've done old north road a few times already. its starting to get very familiar. i'm finding it very hard to control myself. just feel the urge to open up everytime i see those long sweeping corners.

Well if someone wants to organise it im all for it (I bags not as this will be my first KB ride  ). Probably meet at clevedon or something??
I went out to clevedon today and back and did the Scenic route is rather good practice with all the twistys :yeah: . Its nice to smell the fresh air than all the shit you get in Auckland every time you get in the car or on the bike. :Punk:

Next weeks ride is for all paces and stuff.... anyone for a slow and easy cruise next weekend?
A big thanks to everyone for turning up. I didn't expect so many bikes. :) It was a great turnout. I couldn't ask for more co-operation from you guys. Everyone followed the ground rules and did what was asked, making the ride enjoyable for everyone. I think the newbies didn't feel so pressured as everyone was always in a group and riding to their pace. The guys that split off up North to Wellsford sound like they had heaps of fun. :niceone:
Pairing up was a pretty good idea. Thanks to the person who sent me that (I don't know who, was sent as a rep). Thanks to everybody that did what was asked, I cannot stress that enough. It only takes one person to be silly to ruin everything. It looks like there is demand for more newbie rides.
I have to say, riding that slow isn't too bad! Ricksta, eyes off the ladies and sceneray when you are riding!  eyes on the road..
As Limmy said, next one..... can be down south or up to Wellsford (that would be longer ride). Any other suggestion of routes that are EASY for newbies? I don't think 22 is an easy road for newbies.
It was also nice to meet new people! Ricksta, Slashwyde, Sutage, KK, Shade, pommie girl, The Umfaan, dveus, erik (happy birthday yesterday dude), madmax (love your bike!!), MDU... and the ones I have met before, Madguitarist, Limmy, Swanman (wanna buy my CB400?), ZED (nice Super Blackbird Wheelies and thanks for guiding girlfriend (babyR).. :msn-wink: )
I have seen a couple of people asking for photos. There was another photographer there on a Suzuki Bandit, I didn't catch his nick or his name. He was at Taupo too. Do you mind posting them up or sending them to me, so I can post them up.? Thanks!
wrong place to post pics, there is another thread for it.. woops....
wrong place to post pics again, .... :(

Big ups to Shade for helping me out at the end of the pack and Swanman for leading. Thanks Madmax and Umfaan for looking after the rear on the way back. Thanks all those that paired up with newbies! Thanks to all those that turned up and big thanks for a great ride!
