Am wondering how many reckon its ok, and on the other hand what consequences have been seen or happened to you.

Booze and riding / driving is a big fucking nono, end of story....

I like a beer as much as anyone but I am fucked if I am ever going to ride a bike or drive a cage pissed or even near the limit. I have seen so much fucking carnage caused by wankers who think that pissing it up then getting behind the wheel / climbing on the bike is 'all good'.

It aint fucking 'all good', it's being a total wanker. If you want to get on the piss, leave the vehiicle at home or stay at the place you are boozing at.

Saw a feature on One News tonight about these cunts that have been caught drink driving, some of them for the 3rd or 4th time. None of them seemed to give a fuck and the slap on the hand with a wet bus ticket they got was laugable. These idiots could have KILLED SOMEBODY........KILLED SOMEBODY......and they think its a big 'like, joke and stuff.....'. As a side issue, I noted in my local paper that a couple of chancers got 4 years each in prison for trying to stitch up an insurance company, just shows you who is seen as the real criminals, eh....same the world over...

Back on topic, as far as I am concerned, drinking and driving / riding is fucking wrong and anyone who does it for fun or convenience is a fucking arsehoile.

I've lost good people in my life through this hence the tone of this post. Sorry if my language has caused any offence but it's the way I feel.

And I dont give a flying fuck if anyone slags my opinion on this, not a fucking bit.....

I don't drink & ride but you'll often find my bike parked outside a country pub somewhere, don't be so quick to judge. Pubs sell more than alcohol- some have bloody good coffee & food at reasonable prices even if they are in the middle off nowhere.

drink riding ain't cool my dad was knocked off his bike by a drunk driver when i was 2 years old and all they got was 6months lose of licence and a $1500 fine. What a crook of shit. If you are planning on doing a tour of the pubs while on your sunday ride please please think again.

Unless ya going to Jackson where they sell the best pies, and okish coffee and to top it off the best views, the best roads. I miss the pie run!!!!!!!!!

Mate! Don't apologise for causing offense on this issue! You speak true words....

I too have been affected by a drunk retard behind the wheel and it bites every day! Anyone who drinks and drives should be made to go with the Ambo's and Fire Crews to accident scenes and help clean up the carnage they cause.

There's no excuse for drinking and driving/riding. It only causes much pain....

Agree mate, I'm not saying that at all. Pubs are always popular meeting places because they are well known, accessable and popular. My point is that dont get on the piss and ride your bike. I've met up in pubs and am quite happy for either a soft drink or a cuppa (if it's decent). I leave the boozing for when the bike is safely locked up.

I have even gone to work on the bus the next day if I know I have nudged it and could be over the limit, it's just not worth it.

Just keep it clean all, keep it clean

Exactly, we're getting fucked over with ACC levies cos we might hurt ourselves, whereas drink driving bastards (which is illegal btw, not just frowned upon as us bikers are!) are getting hit with a small fine and disqualification, which some claim the can't pay, and ignore the ban anyways.

If I'm riding I'll usually only have a maximum of one beer, and then change to coke or something else non-alcoholic. I'm just as likely to have some pub food at the same time as well.

Personally I think you need a lot more concentration and attention to detail when riding a bike, and the consequences can be rather severe if they are found lacking.

About this time last year i went for a ride with some mates over to Whitianga. Passing the Kopu pub noticed about 8 or 10 sports bikes in the park. We stopped at the mobil to feed the face and get a cold drink. On the way up the inland road the same bikes caught up, in heavy holiday traffic, and proceeded to pass us. About the 4th bike overtook us on a corner and high sided half way round ending up in the bushes on the opposite side of the road. Legs all busted up along with plenty of other scrapes. As i went back to his aid quick as i could, one of his mates came round the corner and did the very same thing only this time he mounted a car and did some major injuries to the passenger ( it was a convertable ). When we got close enough to them to be of any help they smelt like the proverbial brewery. 3 people badly injured ( luckliy not dead ) and 2 of them tested way over the limit. The girl who was the passenger was in hospital for 4 weeks. Lost one of her hands and had some severe facial injuries that didn't look too pretty.

My slant on this is....DONT DRINK!

I drop into pubs all the time, did it last w/e actually. We find it's a great way to meet people, whether they be other bikers or just locals. However, one of my favourite tipples is Bundaberg ginger beer or if I'm having a pint of real beer I'll often mate it with a toasted sandwich or similar bar snack. I would imagine two pints and no food would probably put you up to (or over) the limit so one is enough. I've been on poker runs where it looks like everyone is bar-hopping (which they are) but not everyone is drinking alcohol. In fact, I was on a poker run last summer with about 350 registrations and the cops hassled the crap out of heaps of riders. Some expired Warrants of Fitness were spotted, a few expired rego's and so on but there were no reports of any DIC's even though we'd toured four bars.

It's not where you drink, it's what you drink while you're there.

I'd have a beer or two and take the car a few kms through light traffic, but I wouldn't drive utterly pissed.

As for riding, forget it. My bike weaves around bad enough as it is, and if I mount a kerb pr clip a traffic island with the fucker its going to hurt. One stubbie and I'm off the bike for an hour. A 750ml and I'm off the bike for the day.

Agreed. I never drink and ride, as it affects your judgement, reaction times, and balance - all critical for riding a bike well. And riding a bike less than well is too big a risk.

Pubs in the Wairarapa are happy to sell whatever the patron asks for. Personally - i have coffee on winter rides and in the summer either a shandy or ginger beer. I have ridden with many riders and most of them wont touch alcohol on a ride. I think that overall we are all very mindful of the message re not drinking and driving.

Good thread and very timely with all these great summer rides we are getting out on

I try to monitor my emotional state and attitude....sometimes I am gung ho, and that is the worst mind set to ride or drive.

Its also too hot a state of mind to sustain for long periods as it saps liver yang

I doubt hes judging, nor silly enough to think all are boozing... yes you may drink coffee, but out of say 10 riders how many would have a beer? Id say 8.

yeah a few are thinking you mean as a general... but you are talking about the 'few' that drink to much.
we frequent a pub in Chch its a nice wee ride and great meeting place, most like me call 2 stubbies the limit... but like you I know a group that drinks way to much and or smokes dope... I was curious one day and followed them when they left FUCKING NUTS was there riding.. I choise not to asociat with them when in that state.

Up to the individual whether they drink and ride, but if a guys having a few too many I don't want to be on the road with them,i.e poker runs.
My personal is 2 maximum, and usually they'll be low beers(macs low or similar).
Saw the item on news last night, the guy who hadn't told his family seemed to have learnt, the guy after his 4th said he had but you have to doubt him, trying to be staunch to the bros maybe. When the cops got me 10yrs ago I remarked on the way to station, maybe I'm lucky, the cop said why,my reply was if I carried on maybe I could hit a tanker(living just passed Kiwi dairies main turn off out of Hawera on South Rd and morning run just started),or any other truck or car who knows, maybe getting pulled up saved me in long run.The cop was impressed with that drunken logic at the time.

While on the road I stay away from alcohol. I've no trouble having a beer or two at a pub in town and then riding home across town (this won't be during the rushhour mind) - but open road riding, nope.

I've ridden home from rallies "the morning after", severely under the weather - but at least at that point you aren't giddy and in any danger of over-estimating your own level of competence. I hate that particular situation though and my mind boggles; I am not an early riser and the rally site is usually all but empty by the time I get around to leaving. By that reckoning there would be a lot of people (i.e. >50% of the rally participants) even worse off than me heading home.

I would imagine two pints and no food would probably put you up to (or over) the limit so one is enough.

I bet it wouldn't even put you close to the limit unless you were a tiny wee fella. (Or if you just chugged them down back to back ofc).

I reckon I could quite happily drink a bottle of full-bodied aussie red with my dinner and then be below the limit 2 hours after I started. 0.08 % is actually quite a lot. I sure as hell wouldn't even contemplate driving in that state.

I wouldn't be so sure. I have a mate who blew over after just 3 cans of Lion Red. It was after work and he hadn't eaten since noon. He opted for a blood test and was still over, I had to pick him up on the way to work for six months.

A while back I had the opportunity to drink for free but I'd driven myself to the venue and sipped one an hour for about four hours. I got bagged on the way home and blew a reading of 'Failed Youth', which is quite correct but BOT. The cop just told me to go home, which I did. I reckon if I'd had a 'roadie' I might not have been so lucky.

For the record I think I'm 167cm tall and 83kg's, so I'm not huge and a few pints could very likely take me off the road for a while. Best to not try and find out.

Haven't encountered a pub in the last 20 years where ordering a coffee or Ginger Beer or tomato juice caused any quizzicality at all, from either staff or patrons. It's pretty standard stuff nowadays, ditto with having (reasonably) decent food available.

Years ago, yeah, that was different.

And round Dorkland, pub coffee is usually pretty good. Now, if they could just get the message about not puttinng bloody ice in the Ginger Beer or tomato juice. I want tomato JUICE not tomato WATER.

It does seem to vary from person to person, too, for some reason. Quite apart from weight and gender. Some people just seem to return a higher reading for the same amount of drink in the same time, as others. Differences in metabolic rate or summut I guess.

Yes, it varies wildly as does the effect it has on some people's moods. Happy drunks/nasty drunks etc. I like to laugh and have a good time when I drink and it pisses me off when things turn to shit for whatever reason.

I will drink one (maybe two) wines over several hours and drive my car. If I'm on the bike I stick to non alcoholic drinks only.
Most of the people I have ridden with will have only one beer maximum, but a lot of the time, they too, have only non alcoholic drinks.
Mind you, I do tend to only hang around sensible old farts like myself.....

A guy who used to ride with us, regularly told me I should have 2 or 3 beers and a joint before I got on the bike...would help relax me, he reckoned. Don't ride with him anymore....funny that.....

Young and stupid, right? We've all been there and done dumb shit and those kids outside the Tauranga courthouse were prime examples. I doubt, back in the day, we were any different, we had all the answers, were bold as brass and didn't really give a toss about the consequences of our actions. Sure, some do but most don't. As you get closer to understanding your own mortality so you empathise with that of others; it's just sad that so many don't get there.

See that point, however the One News article about these fucking idiots did say that young people today have grown up with the 'dont drink and drive' message so should get it. These people are simply the generation where noone has to be made feel responsible for their actions. Their 'like and stuff' attitude to life is fucked. I did lots of crazy shit when I was young, for fuck sake, I was playing in bands at 15, bunking off school to play some dingy club in some didgy part of some dodgy town but I never, ever, ever did anything that could endanger the life of another person.

Drink driving does this, those cunts in Tauranga and everywhere else all over the world need to be given a serious punishment for doing what they did. Sometimes I cave in and thiink that, well, first offence and all that but some of these had been up for the 3rd or 4th time....

...and the older generation are just as bad.....it's not just the kids.....

ALL DRINK DRIVERS ARE FUCKING ARSEHOLES....THERE IS NO EXCUSE, NO LET OFF, NO REASON FOR IT

I'm not usually so wound up over an issue but I fucking hate them and those that try and find excuses for them are nearly as bad. They should make all these wankers go for a walk around an A&E dept on a Saturday night or maybe the morge on Sunday morning...then let them see the families of their victims....then lock the cunts up and throw away the fucking key.....

Apologies again for the langauge.....

Especially the knobs that were pulled up outside my place at 1.30am this morning with the blue and whites. Then when the drunken, over loud, uneducated voices were taken away in the police car due to the policeman getting fed up with them. CLANK...BANG...CLANK. Blardy tow truck at 2.30am.

Oh... I dont tend to drink anything alcoholic whilst out on the bike

The only refreshment I will buy at a pub whilst on a ride is coffee or OJ

I'd have a beer or two and take the car a few kms through light traffic, but I wouldn't drive utterly pissed.

As for riding, forget it.
Steve

If I'm going to drive my alcohol intake would be minimal - couple of glasses tops. On the bike my alcohol intake would be a big fat zero. I don't feel my driving to be impeded by a glass of wine or a beer, primarily because the four round things ( no, not my spare tyres) will give me all the balance and stability I need. The two round things under me (no, not my bum cheeks), my bike wheels, will NOT give me balance and stability if I misjudge anything. For me, keeping my bike balanced and upright is not so guaranteed with booze in my system and the absence of a tin can "safety net" clinches the deal!

Done for what? There is no law which states something along the lines of "Thou shalt not ride a pushbike whilst intoxicated"

No; it goes something like "drunk in charge of a vehicle" and a pushbike is a vehicle, just like a skateboard.

I don't mind stopping for a beer while out for a ride.

I'm not riding anywhere near my or my bike's limit so a tiny fractional reduction in reaction time isn't going to bother me too much.

I probably wouldn't ride if I was at the legal limit, even though it has at some point been established that it is safe to operate a motor vehicle after that much alcohol.

I think I've probably been more of a hazard when almost going to sleep inside my helmet than when I've had a pint in the afternoon, ironically one is illegal the other can't be tested for.

I'm just learning to drive at the moment and have promised myself to never EVER drink and drive. I will be buying a Breathalyzer when I get my restricted. Even though I wouldn't drink more than 1 drink in an evening if i know I'm driving, (or maybe no drink at all.)

A couple of days ago I went skateboarding after a few beers and broke my arm. :thud: If alcohol makes me skate like a moron, imagine how it would make me drive? It's scary to think about. There are so many idiots out there on our roads, it's kind of like a minefield.

If you drink and drive, you're a fucking idiot :brick:

(And yes I realize I'm a fucking idiot for drunk-skating but at least I was only a risk to myself and not others.)

A mate of mine did that, broke his clutch arm, rode through a red and got nabbed. Copper took him to A&E, which was nice of him but when the quack gave my mate some painkillers the cop took his keys for eight hours. Suck.

I would also have a single beer at the end of a ride. The thing I make sure is that I am not going out for a "blast" after and I only have one, preferrably with something to eat.

Unless things have improved drastically I'd say save your money. Those $199 breath testers are horribly inaccurate. They also come with a sticker saying if you get busted by the cops, they aren't responsible if the device has told you you're OK to drive but you're way over. My mate had one and it would give wildly different readings doing multiple tests at the same time. I do reckon the safest option is to have only one, or no alcohol if you're driving/riding :niceone:

Am wondering how many reckon its ok, and on the other hand what consequences have been seen or happened to you.

Kiwi's and booze are a fucked up mix at times, bet there's been more than a few "offs" cos of it.

There is nothing illegal about riding a push bike while intoxicated unless the cyclist is so drunk that they can't even stand up properly.

bullshit, you can get fined 50bung for riding drunk, or is that just a plamy bylaw? As its a different amount from the car fine it must come under a different law somewhere
