Are they really that of a problem, only reason why I'm asking is that most models came out in a single carb config? Is that correct with the 250's as well as the 200's? (don't know much about the 250 range)
Honda scraped the twin carb setup after 84 and 85, right?
Ok so my dilemma is that I really want ( no will get ) an XR250R road legal bike, there is one or two on trademe, but with twin carbs. Bike will be 70% used on the road .
Sorry to all the new model XR fans, no disrespect intended, but the older models are the only one's that I love with a passion.
Nordie don't hijack this post lol

Yip..... old bikes are a P.I.T.A. Unless you don't mind spending lots of time and more money than they're worth on them.
An old XR will prolly be fucked twin carbs or not. BUT..... if you like one get it anyway, and yes the older models are best

the carbs are how you identify them- they are not the problem - its the Radial Valve Head that splits and warps and cracks.....

one thing to think about: i had a fat every time i saw an 81-82 DR500 like i had in my younger days, so i bought one, i also bought the problems that came with it, fuck what a head ache that was i'ld be up most of the night before a KB ride trying to get yet another problem fixed because previous owners trashed it, plenty of parts available in the states, but you gotta wait for around 2-3weeks which was no good when you wanted to ride later that week and never mind the on going spending and maintenence. BUT if you find a goody friggen sweet just keep up with the maintenence just be prepared to cough up for a top end every now and then.
end of the day matey if you want one your gona get one your choice

Save up for a 90's model.
Mid eighties XR250RE/F's were grenades missing pins, relating to the heads/Cam Chain tensioners/CDI's. MHO

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!
I rebuilt my 85re twice before i finally killed it properly. Wait for a tidy XR from the early 90's(look better in the white too!).

I got a 90 xr 250.
got road setup but i pulled all that off the bars and stuffed it behind the light.
it bit rough and missing a sidecover and no tail light.
. think it got no blinkers on it but i got a set of new ones when i got a bike awhile ago and took off.
and it has gotten tempremental to start after i let my kids have a play with it.
think they have played witht he screws on the carb.
because if it dont start i pulled the plug out and cleaned it and away it fires.
i just used it on the farm till 18 month ago and it been sitting in the shed.
put new oil seals in forks and oil just before it got parked up
500 buck and it gone.
