The first mate I ever lost to a bike crash died on the same stretch of road. That was 25 years ago, to be honest I've never wanted to travel that road on a bike since then. Maybe I should just to lay an old ghost to rest?

Life is so precious, The only comfort to be had when a biker dies is that s/he died doing something that the person loved.

And only 9 days into the new year, with the rest of the summer still beckoning. I just hope that this poor person will be a lone statistic and that the rest of us keep safe while on the road.

Its a bit of a WTF situation. The bridge is in a 50kmh area with clear visibility in both directions & the accident happened in good weather in full daylight.
I wait with interest to hear the facts.

Can understand the sentiments but in reality, the Coro Loop is no worse than any other road if you ride or drive to the conditions. It's always terrible when someone is lost though.

I'm interested in what comes out too. Not withstanding my previous comment, I've noticed that a lot of holidaymakers, especially car drivers; seem to leave their brains in neutral on the Coromandel. I see some shocking behaviours over the summer months. In fact, last week, a car driver with a young child in the passenger seat came round a blind corner entirely on the wrong side of the road about 100 metres from where I live. I was coming the other way with our daughter on the back and fortunately had time to anchor up. I could see the shock on the driver's face and had I not been focussed on getting home, I might have been inclined to give chase and read the driver her pedigree, followed up by reporting her to the local cop just to drive the message home.

I rode to Whitianga and back from Tauranga one day last week. Certainly LOTS of centreline crossing going on.... 4wds towing boats/caravans etc being main culprits. Made for some interesting use of defence skills. Good ride.... but I won't repeat it in the height of the holiday season

I've never ridden the entire Thames Coast road before - the furtherest has been when visiting a girlfriend in Tapu, and some of those windy bits are reeeealy quite narrow. Some vehicles, especially those towing, seem oblivious to hogging part of your lane as well as their own.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/3219850/Tourist-faces-court-over-fatal-crash

..Motorcyclist James Selwyn Aitken, 38, died following a collision with a car driven by the tourist near Te Kuiti on Saturday about 2.30pm...

...Auckland motorcyclist Jae Hyun Ahn, a 35-year-old was killed on a one-way bridge, on State Highway 25 in the Coromandel, about 3km south of Tairua, on Saturday...

Also it looks like a 3rd (as yet unnamed) bike fatality went unreported until now too.

...A 48-year-old New Plymouth man died after losing control of his Triumph Daytona on State Highway 43, about 26km from Stratford, on Saturday...

Recap for those who haven't read the article: Te Kuiti man hit by a tourist allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road; Coro fatality, he hit 2 stationary cars; third at Stratford "lost control on bend".

Just too sad for words.

I've come quite close to being cleaned up by motorists on the wrong side of the road trying to take corners a little bit quicker. Neither time was I speeding or doing anything wrong. You don't have to be out of control to lose your life on a motorcycle - take care, avoid busy roads, and never assume that the lane you're in is 100% yours.

Quite right. A piece of advice my old man gave when he was teaching me to drive was; "Even though you have right of way, don't assume you'll get it". It is great advice that I've taken to heart, especially on bikes and I've passed it on to all and sundry.

down here where i live, there is alot of tourist activity at this time of the year.
If im on popular tourist routes and im on my motorbike, i find a car travelling at at similar constant speed on straights and bends (im happy to comprimise my speed) they are my buffer from any tourists who happens to be on the wrong side.

"Even though you have right of way, don't assume you'll get it".

Agree with you there... To put it another way... Doesn't matter who's in the right or wrong, a Scannia will stuff you over every time!

As to the fatalities.... My thoughts are with the friends and families of those whose lives were lost.
RIP Men.

That bridge for some reason does catch people out.
