I've only been riding a few months and i think others feel the same way. I think it's fuckin lame the way people go on about this ride safe and be careful internet bullshit. When you get on your bike the last thing your thinking about is what some random poster babbled out on this forum so why bother saying it? It's a fuckin downer dude, get on with it. Everyone here knows the risks involved with these things and if it freaks you out then for your own sake buy a car. Your thinking about the safety others? Hell, i'm not thinking about yours and that's the truth of it!

mmmm!

This ATGATT time thing. All the gear all the time! hahaha oh man when I'm commuting the 15 minute ride to work in the morning i'll wear whatever the hell is going to make me feel comfortable for the other 8.5 hours of the day. Full leathers etc. all the time? Get the fuck out. it's so unrealistic and inconvenient it's ridiculous. The day motorcycling becomes more of a hassle than an experience i'll give it up no problem. When you buy a motorbike and decide that that's that well you either accept the fact that you don't have a tonne of steel around you or you don't there's no more to it.

But it's best to cover your ass and treat other road users like they don't know what they're doing

No one knows what the hell they're doing that's why so many accidents occur. The point is that we do it anyway despite the potential consequences because it's fun. It's something to look forward to before you fall asleep at night or when you've had enough of working. There's so many rules with this stuff already the last thing biking needs is your flakey moral convictions.

To post this and risk the retribution of people who have been hurt or know others who have been hurt or killed while biking? God bless the internet eh!

I had an accident once on the way to work. If I wasnt wearing full gear I woudnt be walking now. The hole in the knee of my Cordura pants was even enough of a reason for me to stop using my Dragon jeans as riding pants.

Personally it takes me 2 minutes to get into my gear and 2 minutes to get out of my gear, and I am easily able to store it at work so I'd wear the gear.

No one knows what the hell they're doing that's why so many accidents occur.Haha, you are a walking dead man, bro. It's just a matter of time before you eat those words, and probably not live to talk about it.

You are not the only person on the road with a brain - there are countless people on the road who know exactly what they are doing and are plenty skilled to boot. It's YOU who is the newbie.

Finally, you had better start thinking about the safety of others. The deal is, I regard your safety as more important than mine, and the same principle applies in reverse. If that deal is off, then the road is a very unsafe place.

Not that you care about what "some random" said on some forum, nor will you do anything about it.

Walking dead man, bro.

I remember every little thing that people tell me, on here, out there.... it helps a hell of a lot, and I love all the little stay safes that people send out. You may appreciate it but I don't think you get it... or you need to start to get it... all the above are right... I suggest you take heed of the words and live to see another day. Biking has come in leaps and bounds over the years, cars are faster, more I think I am the best driver/biker in the world idiots are around.

If you don't like what your reading move to another thread, but I still say wear the gear, it may save your life when someone pulls out in front of you one day! :)

To post this and risk the retribution of people who have been hurt or know others who have been hurt or killed while biking? God bless the internet eh! In many ways for this old motorcyclist i found this post at least refreshing, least your telling it how you see it rather than the endless boring tripe many post up because they seem to consider it popular opinion.Yep bikes are dangerous, they were 38 years ago when i started riding and they will be for years after ive gone, simple really and as you say none of whatever i read on an interweb site is in my head when i head off on the bike.As for the gear thing,i dont ride to work etc etc,my bikes when ridden are ridden for lengthy periods and with my share of offs in my time the pain involved with them has ensured i tend to wear good gear whenever i ride,if i had to use my bike on a daily basis to go to work etc i doubt i could be bothered putting it on.There will hopefully come a day in your motorcycling lifetime when you will look back on this thread and chuckle, not at your wisdom now but then.

Wear them under your gear. Bit difficult to find in NZ (don't know why), but good cordura overpants are awesome, I had some made with zips up both legs (inside) to well above knees, I can put them on and take them off in seconds without even taking off my boots. Zips above the knees (about mid way up the inside thigh) is the trick, if they are below the knee you can't get your boots through easilty.

Seriously, it's zero hassle, I'm a pretty inherently lazy guy, if it takes >30 seconds to gear up, I'm not interested. This is why I got them.

I agree that wearing protective gear is your own personal choice, it's your skin after all (and ACC levies couldn't possibly get higher than they already are, could they?). As a student balancing a part time job and study I couldn't afford the whole kit anyhow (well, I could have foregone food for a couple of months and bought a second hand set of leathers). I also tried to squeeze as much life out of my tread as I could to save money on tyres. Of course the result is that I have a few nice circular patches of scar tissue over my legs but I have no regrets.

On the other hand, in my opinion you must certainly respect those on the road with you, regardless of their being morons. If you ride like an idiot and piss off other vehicle users then it means you are putting other's well being at risk through your actions. That is unacceptable in my books.

Jonathan
11th January 2010, 04:27
I just realised I was being a bit hypocritical when it comes to tread. I take this opportunity to make the symbolic gesture of apologising to all those I have slid in front of in the past due to my bald tyres!

I crank my bike hard, i enjoy it, its the whole reason i ride is because i have changed my attitude to life. Live it as hard as you want for as long as you can. Coz sometimes someone else doing something beyond your control, COULD, MAYBE, take it away from you.

What injuries did you get last time you came off? How long did it take you to recover last time you came off your bike?

But it's best to cover your ass and treat other road users like they don't know what they're doing

Agreed. One day, sooner or later we will all have an accident. Who is at fault won't matter. I might not see the other vehicle, or may have nowhere to go. I will end up sliding down the road. Covering your arse with protective clothing makes sense.

The point is that we do it anyway despite the potential consequences because it's fun. It's something to look forward to before you fall asleep at night or when you've had enough of working. There's so many rules with this stuff already the last thing biking needs is your flakey moral convictions.

The rules are there because people lack the intelligence, common sense or care for others to protect themselves (the dummies give the country its average IQ right?). Can I ask a simple question... Would you wear a helmet of any sort if not legally required to do so?

If you had visited a friend in hospital pretty much munged due to a road accident, I suspect you wouldn't have posted this in the first place and wished they had worn protective gear. I won't give you any retribution. You won't understand until it happens to you or a good mate.

I agree, though it is fairly likely we will crash its not a certainty, crashing is probably the quickest (only in some cases) way to learn that you are not bulletproof, and also learn the limits of the bike. And also mess up some chrome and ally frame :crybaby:
Better idea is to learn bike limits on track days, and wake up to the obvious fact that 80kgs of meat atop 140kgs of metal, is only good if it stays that way up :msn-wink:

It's the attitude that I find difficult with this poster. Sweetheart I fully support your right to damage yourself, but FFS there are other road users who will suffer if you come off and get damaged beyond repair. I know, a few years after a boyfriend I had was killed in a collision I chanced to met up with a girl who had been a child passengar in the car that hit him. She was still shaking about it.
Think on it for just a few minutes...
