Hi all,

My wife and I are avid supporters of Ronald McDonald House, Wellington after using the facility for a 6 month period in 2004. The house in currently trying to raise $14milion dollars to build a new house for families with sick children, who need to use it, just like we did. Link here: www.givealotoflove.org.nz (http://www.givealotoflove.org.nz)

Please join us on the day to make this event a huge success. We have some great items that will be up for auction after lunch that will be provided back in the square after the ride. We are hoping to display the bikes in the run to the public while the lunch is provided and the auction run.

Awesome intro Flynn.
Realy pleased to be part of this and support such a good cause.
Although i havnt used ronald Mcdonald house in NZ, Monie and I had to use it in Melbourne when our down syndrome son had to have heart surgery. If it wasnt for the great support of Ronald Mcdonald house we would have spent a couple of weeks sleeping in the car.

Look forward to seeing you all there suporting another great cause. I hope you never need to use thier services but if you should, i am sure you will be pleased to have given your support

Yeah likewise.
Unless there is a huge storm predictited for the Sth Is that weekend, or some other problem, we will be heading down south. We were going to go to the Woodstock and/or Vincent County rallies but work/family commitments have have got in the way so the March Hare has become the target.
But if it all turns to custard we'll head your way instead.

Donation...hmmm...I guess that could be arranged.

Monamie posted this in another thread and as she is speaking from the heart as to why she is putting so much effort into this event I am posting in here (with her permission). Even though not all of us have had to deal with the trauma of having a sick child, we can all relate to the situation and dispair that parents must feel. This event will be big and such a great cause .. none of us know when we or our families may need this service.

My nephew Adam was diagnosed with cancer when he was very young. His parents of course were distraught and like any young couple had no money to spare. A lot of time was needed to be spent in Wellington for treatment-that involved a lot of travel and accommodation costs.

RMH offered a place where they could stay and petrol vouchers to help transport Adam to his chemo sessions. They found that staying with other parents in a similar situation gave them the endless support, comfort and the will to help Adam fight this cruel disease.

I myself feel I did not do enough to help them.....I have many excuses. Although I readily offered my help I was scared and not sure what was needed. We were not a particularly close knit family-the saying was `I’ve raised my kids; you can raise yours’ (from Grandparents). I was not allowed to interfere so could only offer an ear if needed-I should have done more for them.

After a gallant fight, Adam passed away at age 4.

I chose a mighty Golden Elm to plant for him in the garden. The kids and I picked out a big Elm from the nursery and planted it so it would have pride and place of the garden. When spring came and the neighbours Elms had started to bud-Adams tree was bare. A month later when the neighbour’s trees were in full leaf-Adams tree was still bare. I figured it was perhaps a `dud` tree and a nursery confirmed it must be dead. I left the tree there as a reminder and felt that I was being punished for being such a coward by doing something `after` rather than when it was needed before his passing.

That summer while we were in town I asked the kids if they wanted to go up and see Adams grave-he had been gone for awhile I still had not gone up to see him. We went to see him and had a chat. The kids left some things for him, a precious `Pokemon card` and flowers. I told him I loved him and hoped things were ok now he was pain free. A few weeks later my son Sam yelled from the garden “Mum, come and see Adams tree”. You guessed it........it was covered in leaves.......

Fundraising for the RMH is the least I can do, for Adam and the huge number of people who go through the devastation of having a critically sick child.

I just did the Chateau to Plateau ride yesterday, organised by the Stratford & Toko Lions, and they sold T Shirts, Polo shirts, and ride pins.

Are you going to do the same for this ride?

Flynn

We were going to but were advised not to on the first year?????

Thoughts???

red mermaid
2nd February 2010, 13:42
I got both pin and Polo shirt.

You have probably left it late for the T shirts and Polo's because you would have to take a chance on how many to order.
Order just a few and sell out quickly, or order too many and be left holding them at the end and no way to sell them?
Tie that in with what number is just enough, or what number is too many.

Do the T Shirts and Polos next year when you can get people to pre-order and pre-pay for them.

I would say the pins would be a better bet, less expense and therefore less risk/exposure in costs for you.

Will definitely be there.

Actually guys, that's a vey good point. I think the details should be in the OP and a map of the route included. Afterall, it's a magic run this one.
I must agree - good cause or not it is the event and ride that will attract riders. I can confirm this is a nice loop with good corners and views which at a slower pace we will be able to appreciate.

Wow what luck I was planning on doing this ride before daylight savings ends ( never ridden the loop before) but know its awesome, and now I see it posted here with the opportunity to support a more than worthy cause (bonus).
Will definitely be there.

.... also was talking about this event to a couple of kapiti riders last sunday as we stopped for a cold one in Kimbolton. None had heard of it but all were keen so hopefully through continued pestering wil bring them along too

there are posters up in Kapiti  should be around the bike shops there

Should be a really good day and the road is in pretty good condition at the moment, had a fun blatt over it the other arvo. A little gravel on the seal on one of the twisties from this direction but nothing that should cause concern and will probably be gone by next month by any luck.

Great idea to combine a good route with raising money for kids that really need it.

Plenty of riders should turn up if they are not off to the March hare I reckon. Look forward to seeing you there :ride:

Thanks for your support, Sarah, it is an excellent cause, I am hoping to "Put it on the Map" as such, so the more bikers the better and the more people I can make aware of the house the better for them.

Well, where do I start, the day was simply AMAZING:yes:

I know you'll all be wondering how much money was raised.......$$$6770.00 till now with a small matter to clear up, wow.

Thanks so much to those who came, (especially the large amount of people who were out of towners) entered and were fed, weren't the burgers, awesome, thanks to Melody's new world who donated the cube rolls for the steak.

Thanks also to those who bid at the auction, man didn't you lot get some bargins, like, ferry crossings for a car, 2 adults and 3 kids worth $600 went for $145, a brand new set of drawers worth $1100 went for $230, the weekend away worth $460 went to Cowboyz for $150, etc, etc, etc.

Special thanks to James (meanie) JS Kitchens, for getting right behind the event, he would have put as much time into organising this thing as I did, putting up with me going round, what do you think of this, how should we do that, phone calls, etc, etc. Without the support of Ashhurst - Pohangina Lions we would have been in dire straits, so a huge thanks to those guys too!!

Thank you to all who made this day the success that it was, I won't go naming people as I'd probably leave some one out!!

Hey this can only get better.

A huge pat on the back to Flynn and family, whos dedication to give a little back made all this possible.
Time spent organising and running this event was imense but in the end, well worth it.
A big thanks to all those who in the back ground were out drumming up spot prizes, donations and helping with the organising, without which we would not have had such a good result.
Another big thanks to the Ashhurst Pohongina Lions club who were simply awesome to say the least. they did more than they were asked and did it extremly well, burgers were great and were given out when we returned at a pace that was probably quicker than the ride itself :ride: Thier organisation skills and efficinecy was supreb. It needs to be mentioned that they supplied some of the items needed on the day, including the chiller and sound system. So to all the Lions club members there on the day and in the background helping to organise the event :clap::clap:
A Huge thank you for the out of towners for coming to support us on the day, big turn out from down Kapiti, Wellington way i believe. I hope we can give the same support to you in time

Last but certainly not least, thanks to all the businesses and people out there who kindly donated to this charity event, especialy considering the financial pressure everyone has been under after such a challenging year with the recession biting many of us very hard
AFC motorcycles donated a very generous $1000 worth of gift vouchers and showed up with thier tent and three of thier finest bikes even when they had a huge sale on at thier showroom with the radio station there. Thanks Brendon, your generosity has been noted and appreciated

Please support our sponsers as we would like to have thier support in the future and thier generosity needs to be rewarded

Well organised and run, hopefully those business sponsors get good mileage for their buck and was welcomed by the benefactors, great way to enjoy the feelgood factor by participating, role on next year.
Maybe next year the date could be earlier, especially as non biking sponsors have the relay for life next week, and having two great causes close together makes it hard to give good products to two organisations close together.

I'm glad it was a huge success, and well done to Flynn and all organisers, it's a huge task to take on such an event, alot of time and sleepless nights. Sorry I couldn;t be there, I had a Cooking class to attend to in Te Horo

Well worthwhile experience, felt my little baby was a bit small but I kept up thanks to all leaving their "ego" behind. Great day, great cause. and great trip. Ready for next year.

... thanks to all leaving their "ego" behind.

I still brought mine to the party! just had to leave it in second gear the whole trip so it still felt insanely fast...

Awesome ride despite us all doing that loop at speed normally. Really enjoyed just cruising for once and leaving the front wheel down on the road - mostly. Thanks FMS Team! Nothing like a trip to the Center Of The Universe to keep things interesting!
