Right, I know this is a bike forum but I need your advice. My car, It's a '95Honda Odyssey, failed it's WoF due to worn front brake pads (and a rear back tyre). The garage that done the WoF quoted me $170-$200 for the pads (tyre $135) now my question is can I buy the pads cheaper from a car store and do them myself, if so, what tools would I need or is this best left to a mechanic to do???
Thanks in advance :Punk:

No offence mate but brakes are somewhat important all things considered so if you need to ask what tools etc i would leave it someone who knows what there doing, got any mates that do and would walk you through it?.Pretty easy once you know.

A few that could help! it's more about the finances at the mo, can't afford $200 for the brakes, $135 for a tyre and then $130 for the licence all in one hit, thought it might be easier to do it myself!

I did think that $200 was a little on the high side. The guy that I normally take my car to is on holiday just now! Bugger

Again though... If one has to ask.....
But yeah, if you have a manual, and can understand what all the bits are and the procedure, then no worries.... Manual cost around $70 though...

I believe that if I read up on it I would be able to do it!

Appco , BNT,autostop -all trade suppliers. Tyre wise I can't comment sorry -But I'd give kickaha a yell He will be able to answer.
I must say that I agree with the commentsw posted above. If you need to ask then you NEED a freind who has done front brakes before to show how its done.

Brake pads are an easy thing to do. Theres fuck all to do wrong unless you rip a hose or leave something loose.
If you can get some help, definitely do it yourself.

They are also impossibly easy, especially something as simple as front pads on a car!
Should be able to get some for about $25 from supercheap, or they have a better range for a whopping $45 (although prices may have risen since last april when i quit).

Just go slow, and think. Don't let your helper do it for you. Do it yourself, and have them advise you.
Probably you will need a meaty set of ring-and-openend-spanners or a socket set. An $80 set will do - you don't need a $400 set, and skip the $29 socket set.

I used to do stuff like this myself, but the last time it was going to cost $80 to buy the pads and do it myself, or $99 for the whole job at pit stop. For $20 I figure its not worth shagging around doing it myself.

Easy to do half-arsed. Easy to fuck up. Get someone who knows more than just how to remove the old pads and fit new ones - there's much more to it than that.
