Importing parts?

I've just ordered some parts for my DR from the states. Do I have to pay duty and GST on them when they get here?

I have ordered heaps of car- parts from the states.
It seems if you dont spend too much in one go ( $300-$400), you will be ok

There's quite a few thread about this but essentially there is no duty on motorcycle PARTS but GST is collected if the declared vlaue + freight is above $400 ie. $50 GST.

Really? On two separate occasions I've brought in over NZ$1000 worth of gear and haven't been charged. However frequency might ave something to do with it.. my shipments were a year apart.
