View Full Version : Lesson learnt and new wing mirror required

I was pootling down Petone Esplanade tonight down the LHS of the backed-up traffic. Then all of a sudden "WHACK!" a parked vehicle I passed opened it's driver door. My wing mirror made contact and spun round so I couldn't see it. I kept riding and flicked it back round to find the mirror smashed (still in the surround though). I was 2 minutes from home so didn't stop.

I just kept thinking how that could've turned out if I had been a few seconds later going past!

Good lesson for me to keep my eyes peeled at all times!!! And no doubt a lesson for the car owner to look before they open their car door - I could've just as easily been a cyclist.

Yep, that over taking on the left is a real killer.

Yep, you do need to give enough space so that doors can open without hitting you.

That's seven years bad luck for you (hope not).

a cheap option would be to insert a plastic mirror

I split down the left on the esplanade all the time and had a few close calls, could have been worse, at least it was only a mirror injured :niceone:

The cheaper option is to remove the mirror.....

down the LHS of the backed-up traffic. Then all of a sudden "WHACK!" a parked vehicle I passed opened it's driver door. My wing mirror made contact and ...Um yeah you better not do that. If you do, then watch very very carefully for anyone seated in parked cars, and travel at such a speed you can easily stop.

I can tell you a long, tragic, and expensive story about that, but I wont because its not my story.

I would have gone back and smashed their head in....Damn straight. Take helmet off, smile at them, and then hit them with helmet.

LOL DB. There's always the odd nugget of great advice mixed in with your posts :niceone:

Like DB said, always look into those cars on the left for possible drivers exiting without looking

Just don't try polishing it - you'll probably find out it's a turd.

Awesome, so not only do you have to buy a new mirror, you then need to go and buy a new helmet. Genius that is...

Lesson learnt ? :)

Always keep a good distance away as others have said. Chalk it up to experience.

I think you'll find that the human face is still rather tough and swinging a helmet full tit into it will cause enough impact to require replacement. I imagine you'd still have a go though tough guy, because you're awesome...

Anyway undertaking is not for me, I find it fucking dodgy as...

You are indeed a lucky young lady...many years ago I nursed an 18 y/o guy whoi had the same thing done to him. He ended up having an above the knee amputation....

geez girl...you is lucky. that is one scarey incident. I had it happen years ago on a pushbike with my baby in a seat on the back. we went splat....that was the day i was grateful they made cycle helmets law.

you're right....another lesson you learnt. we learn every day. take care.
