Nope, Americans are really this fucking stupid.

For them it's all about how it looks. Function has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Dear lord.

That is akin to a story of a "really good fitter man", who couldn't get a bearing off a 4 1/2" motor shaft, so instead of cutting the bearing with the gas axe, he cut off the shaft and pressed the bearing off..

Edit - stilson wrench = skeleton key.

So the roads over there are so flat ya only need 2" of travel?

I can see that as a quick n easy mod for a drag only bike, wouldn't like to test it on our roads though.............always good for a chuckle those guys though.

Ditto hear.

At first I couldn't believe the work the guy was doing. F'ing conduit cut with a hacksaw blade.

Then I was even more shocked by all the guys on there thanking him for the help.

If you look at the posts though there are multiple posts from guys that are blow buddies with the OP.

WTF is everyones' problem?? The guy stripped his forks and lowered the ride height with spacers. So fucking what?? I've done it on regular damper forks. Lowers the height without having to raise the forks thru the triple clamps. The guy used the tools he had available. What's he supposed to do, pay some parasite 80 bucks an hour to do it for him? Jesus, the pompous ohlins/latte brigade around here are so far up their own importance it's not funny...

If you did want to lower the front el cheapo, why would you not lower the forks through the clamps ? Spacers are just reducing the suspension stroke are they not ?

I've worked on forks where the cartridges had been stripped with stillsons, flakes of metal that had been chewed up by the jaws had dropped off into the fork oil, circulated and jammed in the valving, 2 broken scaphoids and a trashed bike were the result for that have a go hero.

Probably he could have used a strap wrench rather than the stillsons.

....should have used a proper cartridge clamp to avoid distorting the "roundness" of the body.
That's if you care about/have any idea about stiction etc

Americans. :weird:

You can't really say that, there's some real botch jobs done in this country. An engineering friend of mine who had occasion to work on classic cars and bikes commented that all too few customers wanted the job done right. They wanted cheap. And then there were the ones who did it themselves even cheaper.

By that stage there's probably not a lot of difference between them and the guy in the clip...

I have made clamps for servicing thin wall hydraulics, depending on the hole size it is a piece of cake to machine up fixtures like this.. Stilsons arrggghhhh

im all for doing shit yourself, and modding gear, but really, i wouldnt have thought any one would be stupid as that, considering dropping your forks through your yokes does the same job, with out losing any of the travel. with out it costing a penny and would take less than 10minutes

thats just bodgery for the sake of bodgery as far as i can see,

1. The Hayabusa has a cover that goes over the top clamp that would prevent this.

2. Some sanctioning bodies only allow you to have xx amount of fork tube above the triple clamp. They do not limit internal mods to the forks though.

No, we actually have standards and definitely dont drink latte. The sad thing is someone will end up buying such bikes secondhand, blisffully unaware that the fork internals are butchered internally, and the pompous idiots selling them to them will fail to mention same. NOW THATS PARASITICAL.

EXACTLY, and these same pricks will still want top dollar when they onsell them, in spite of the butchery. Thats why we have experts with the right tools and knowledge, and the right to earn a living at reasonable prices. Does the same idiot ( more like wanker ) that posted this trash do brain surgery as well? Hope he doesnt work on aircraft........

Yeah? Finding a very few rare cases of shoddy fucked-up workmanship performed by some doped-up backyard monkey, then getting snotty and hostile towards your average kiwi 'home mechanic' is pretty much just plain old knee jerk reaction..

Broad sweeping statements that basically lump all 'home mechanics' in with the cowboys and pricks and wankers etc.. etc.. well, it's just not true at all - and out of line...

Of course there's dishonest wheeler-dealer arseholes out there who don't give a fuck.

Of course there's a few slippery toads out there who'll flick of known fucked gear/equipment without mentioning a goddam word to the muggins buyer.

Look at those shitheads who were selling bogged and painted over helicopter blades a few years back. Helicopter blades for krissakes! Trust no bastard!

Guess what? YOU BUY 2ND HAND, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN. There ain't no bearded, long-haired saint floating around in the clouds looking out for you all.

A rider blaming the previous owner for their own misfortunes won't help them one iota will it? Welcome to real life...

The scary thing is that some people reading that litany of butchery will believe its perfectly acceptable to use stilsons on thin wall fork cartridge tubes. I make no bones about sticking up for those who do everything properly and by the book ( irrespective of whether they drink latte or not ) and also condemning those with the finesse of an elephant. And those ( demonstrably ) with rather large chips on their shoulders.

Yankee Doodle Dandy

Most of the newer forks use a white delrin or whatever it is white plastic looking material. This stuff is good to go.

If it is actually plastic PVC tubing I would remove it and replace it with aluminum tubing.

The PVC eventually cracks and will block the valves and cause the forks to lock up.

Nah, this stuff had 'Nova something' stamped on the side, and roughly hacksawn ends. It was clearly PVC water pipe. I suggested that he might wish to seek professional advice before riding much further, but he was happy to just slap 'em back together.
