Hi folks we are all set for the march hare. Unfortunatly there has been a few hic cups due to some virus thingy invading our web site. Never mind all good now so the on line registation form is now all go. The grounds are looking great and the team have been hard at work to make this the best rally in New Zealand. We have two great bands namely the old faithful Brothers Grim and this year we have a new up and coming band Shadow Puppets. I have heard them preform and they are outstanding.
Looking forward to seeing all you guys and girls there. Check out the outstanding deal bluebridge are doing for those of you coming from the north island.
Roll on the March Hare!!!!!!!!!!!:jerry::jerry:

Yeah that is the way I would go if I was coming through from Chch, so keep doing what your'e doing!!
My little detour would bring you out at Pleasant Point so you would have to back-track to Cave plus you would miss half of the nice ride between Geraldine & Fairlie.
What time & day are you & the Chch bunch arriving at Waimate?

Another great weekend.

Good ride down saturday morning other than the normal trying to keep up on the wee 600 with 2 people and a shitload of gear, would have been better without the overindulgence on friday night but started coming right after lunch at Fairlie and the ride from there to Waimate was excellent.

As usual the company was good, the music was good, and a couple of drinkies to help it along. Well done to the hardy few that saw it out to the end, told you we should have put out the burning couch on the way back.

Fairly leisurely start this morning, nobody seemed to be in too much of a hurry to go and talk to the nice policemen outside the gate. Loaded up and headed out after the crowd had cleared, talked to the machine and oddly it detected alcohol, but all good with a proper test and home up SH1 watching the usual stupidity on the passing lanes.

Home safely and bike unloaded, is tired now so time for bed. :shifty:

Im suprised they got so many. Its not hard to wait around until your sober enough to drive (and then wait some more to make sure).

As for the stupidity, you didnt come across a grey Audi? Over took me while I was overtaking another car. I nearly shat my pants.

Realistically if they were being proactive with us they'd have had someone in the rally site where we could have gone and checked before getting on to the road  There were two being asked into the bus when we went through.
A bloke walked up ahead of me and blew the meter then headed back in for a few hours detox

So that was another weekend and another ride on the bike Southward, Waimati camping.
It all started with a normal day at work, and the end of what has been a hectic couple of weeks. Going to school after morning tea to see the kids swimming gala, back to work, home finish packing and await the kids to come home to say bye bye and off I go astride me bike toward Rolly BP at 3.40ish:scooter:.

miSTa was parked up, muttering a few words to one another, we rode south to Timaru for gas, and Waimati for some fish and chips. The blue cod surely was not at all. It was not bad, but very far away from good either.

Ariving at the site, the latest I have ever done to a rally, pitchin tent at near dark.
Very deserving of a few drinkies:sick:.
Though HOT, seeing her slyly putting lemons and bottles of stuff into her tent... I thought, aint coming anywhere near here later..... mmm well, I did, two shots... ti killa is still bad, and that vodka with mint and somthing... weird, kinda nice, but still weird.

Woke in the morning… BONUS.
Ride time after breaky to Tarras for lunch. Was an awesome day for a ride, with miSTa and Nighthawk as once out of the Waimati gorge, the sun gleamed:sunny:.
A fab ride over the Lindas, an awesome Burger at the Tarras café, about turn back to a cloudy rally site, somewhat fuller than before.

Roving the site, many bikes, and interestingly, so many seen before at rallies before. Food and drink chatter and all as had done the previous night.

Woke again. A delayed start due to a small number people testing breaths.:shit:

Got home, with the tired feeling and thinking, can’t be bothered going to another.
A day in reflection and the thought of the Hororata and/or the Off The Rails… well lets do it again:Punk:.

I did take a few pic's and should post the links tonight.

Really?Havent heard anything about it on the local station, amusing that there complaining of delays due to the breath testing really as if there was an accident involving a pissed biker there would be even more complaining about the lack of testing no doubt.Rock and a hard place i guess, though it held me up i got home safe n sound which all things considered is fine by me,they did it right outside the gate so anyone that got busted really cant complain to much, actually not at all.EDIT,just occured to me that you meant there was a booze bus in Timaru Zed.No idea i headed South.

Sadly word has it that the Wallibie has lost it's bounce...there were some serious sounds coming from his tent, I tried blocking it out... but the fear of being so close to something so explosive, and I am not talking miSTa either.
I also heard that the wallibie community is wishing to be extradited back to Aussie, they can not deal with such trauma from a man such as him.

Have had nuerous comments from the public about the low fail rate. Good to see no incidents and everyone home safely.
We are purchasing breath testing machines for anyone wishing to use them for next year.

Well we are already on the move starting to organise the 25th next year. Keep an eye on the website for updates and ifo. Its going to be huge with everything biger and better.

Ahhhh....you neglected to mention one important "incident", the Waimate Fire Brigade showing up at 3:15am to put out the fire caused by a few drunken munters. I think there may be a connection with the breath testing of every single rider leaving the campsite and the delays it caused, ya think? The Fire Service guys were getting abused and cheeky abuse hurled in their direction....bare in mind these guys were woken from their slumber and I bet they were pissed about that!!! Ya think maybe they may have a few cops as mates??? I guarantee they do! Consider this my fellow bikeoids, I wonder if there will be ramifications for next years Rally.
Ok, rant aside (and I have been known to be a "loose cunt") excellent Rally and I managed to slip out early...5am, so I missed all the action but FUCK it was cold and foggy to Timaru!

well I 've had three go's at getting the pic's sorted but the £%"(*& pc kept crashing most likely to much  in the system :brick:

we left home straight after the kids went to school 1130ish  in the rain, by the time we got to millers flat it was a drizzal & by the time we were half way to lake onslow it had stopped, but the mist was at ground level & a little bit slippy under foot :sweatdrop: by the time we got to the lake the cloud had lifted & made got time, stopped at ranfurly for coffee then on to danseys pass for a bite & pint then off over the pass & waimate.
set up in the same spot as last year as i needed to hang my bed some where as there was no room for the hat stand as i had Mrs Shrek's gear as well, then off to see who was already here & what do i find but solly house trained & in public  "well done Kay"

Not sure about that, the logic is sound but the cop car that passed us just before Tinwald with the same copper that asked me to talk to the machine in the passanger seat and two others in the back that looked far to relaxed for a transfer on naughty people, then was observed head out of Ashburton towards Christchurch would possably place that in doubt.

Left the rally site about 11:30 when the queue to talk to the :Police: machine had died down a bit. Headed off to Otamatata to visit the "old riders" but they were not home.... again. Continued on to Omarama, stopped for an ice cream and caught up with xknuts, then off over the Omarama Saddle. Beaut ride and views. Met people even! Went out via St. Bathans, Becks then home to dry out (even though it had not rained all weekend)

"Major booze bus attack" and after trapping and testing almost all the attendees at the rally.....only 5 offenders out of 3250!

That's a pretty responsible result! :niceone:

To be "resposable" at a rally every single person should stop drinking and be in bed by midnight .
Im betting the 5 nicked didnt plan nor expect that they were tecnickly pissed still, Im betting they did NOT knowingly ride under the influance.. UNLIKE and I bet you a pound to a knob a goat shit more then 5 did from the pub in town just up the road, the likes of farm hands etc would have drunk and drove straight after, knowing they shouldent.
Last wood stock I was half way home thinking i was tied... or was I still a bit pickled, wasent deliberate like a drunk leaving the pub.
Na fuck the cops in this situation, they should have been PRO active and had been inside the gate giving everyone a chance to fess up, if a pissed biker then drove out the gate, do his arse.

T.W.R

Geesh you two

Firstly it wasn't a booze bus attack...... the majority of attendees at the rally were well aware that there was going to be a B/B set-up at the gate well in advance; the organisers knew and it was a topic of conversation on Saturday night and most likely on the friday also; and the blousey trout who circumnavigated the whole rally site on Sunday morning around 6.30am bellowing out the fact that the B/B was in attendance & setting up at the gate, confirmed the fact.

Even though the officers doing the B/B are only the foot soldiers for the powers that be, they were pleasant to deal with and weren't disgruntled at having to let the majority through nor rubbing their hands with glee when they scored a numbnut

Least with having the B/B in attendance did curtail some of the hooray henrys from hitting the road early....how often returning from rallies do you see or hear about chumps thinking their in some sort of point to point race passing others like idiots & thinking they have to pass everything on the road or crashing??
Least the B/B held some back at the rally site because they knew they'd either be over or for other reasons they may get pinged for; plus it got a few's grey matter cogging a bit more efficiently before they did get on the road. Dutch courage dwindles when confronted by a possible result to ones detriment.

The biggest bugbear about the whole thing was the location of the B/B.....20m from the site access gate......it wasn't sneaky nor trying to imply a hunt & destroy tactic; Anyone who rode into it accidently must have been totally oblivious & if so shouldn't have been on a bike to start with if they were that unaware.
And as for the ones thinking 'argh fark they've trapped us' that's just an admission of guilt for the actions they'd have taken otherwise.

As for chasing down local yokels from country pubs D, it happens all the time usually involving the local cop and the area HP officers....but the biggest wall they're up against is the local bush telegraph  the locals ring the pub informing them the cops are about and it's a damn hard job to chase someone in their own backyard :shifty: I'd hate to think how often that used to happen at Chertsey as the pub is one of the most notorious in Mid Canterbury for exactly what you're implying D

Mostly agree with what you are saying, it was poorly planned with regard to location etc, the thing that grates a little when a person said to paraphrase hey can I see if I am over the limit before I get out the gate, I feel fine but it would be nice to be sure, the reply was basicly no bugger off and wait 12 hours.

If there was a real concern with the possibility of drunk driving why not setup the same check point on Brougham Street in Christchurch or Princes Street in Dunedin on a Sunday morning for the same length of time or at least until the processing of 3000 people has taken place and see what the result is, I think it would be interesting.

Hey Scummy, I think the point that has caused the umm anger for want of a better word is not that this was done but how it was done, there might be some photos around of the set up, I would say that if it was road works then they would not comply with the Transit legislation, the safety zones that had been established by the organisers were comprised in such a manner that had there been a crash the Police would be obligated to investigate. I have had a look at the MTM/STMS notes I have here and well that would be how they interpret the situation.

There were too few testing officers on site, and they had a fair idea of the numbers of riders, evidential blood tests were being done in Timaru instead of having a doctor there, I was speaking to a gent in Timaru who had undergone the blood test, he was taken to Timaru, had to wait 1 hour for the test, and during that time was able to drink plenty of water and go to the loo, had his result been just over there was a dam good chance in the time he had he could have gotten the blood levels down to a pass.

Guess I can see where you are coming from, and those who did get caught were undoubtedly stupid, it really would have been nice to see no bikers and a few cages caught, it would have been interesting to have a look at the figures of how many cars and trucks that passed through vs bikers that left the camp were tested.

And almost everyone has short term memory loss to the fact that it was months ago that we were made aware of the fact that during this summer there was to be a campaign in the Canterbury region targeting Motorcyclists  there's a thread here on KB about it & if my memory serves me right it started the same week the Magpie was held.
And realistically since then this is the first major event of its type in the region.... so put two & two together and realise it was bound to happen sooner or later. Different department CVIU do the whole truck thing for the most part, and if they were doing similar they would have checked rego's and WOF's. Thats something I was wondering why they didn't do if it was a serious look at motorcyclists.

Anyhow enough, I doubt anyone but those unconvinced by the whole situation even give a toss, and as there were no accidents, (more by luck than anything), there will be no interest by the media or general public.

I still would love to see the result it they did the same on a main road for the same numbers on a Sunday, or have the same policy around a large sporting event, could be interesting.

Everyone is in the same boat opinion-wise to the setup of the location of the checkpoint.........

but the majority have failed to read this:

me being one, but i did know that they where targeting bikes though,

I did find out today why they would not breath test me before I went out,

some one did so at another time, that person then went back & drank more came out & got done for D.I.C, when it went to court it blew up in the :Police: face when the perp said to the Judge, that he got breath tested by the cops & they said he was ok, pc plod got the :kick: up the arse perp goes free  his head off, now we copp it because of one :tugger:
so best make sure we not over before we leave rallys

I still think the BB is a good thing, & you can enjoy the :ride: knowing that you're clear

I have a small breath tester to use as an indication which helps you can also buy the crystal testers from the supermarket

But you must remember: this product is intended to give an indicative reading only and is carries no guarantee of accuracy supplier accepts no responsibility for any consequence arising from the use of this device.

On saying that it hasn't let me down yet. Used it just before leaving March Hare and most other rallies...

We were the target just like if the cops are doing truck COF/RoadUser/Log Book/ Loading checks they don't stop other vehicles they just target trucks.

The other reason they probably did it at the gate is time limit they can hold you up without doing anything on the road. We get let go if there is a queue on the weighbridge or check point if they can't process us , think its 15 or 20 min .

The HOG rally seemed to not have been targetted in any way, it was only about 2 weeks earlier.

The cop organising the booze bus operation is not privy to that infi I suspect.

And they too drink - lots at times!.

:slap: lol forgot about that.......though realistically it would have been a logistical nightmare undertaking the same operation processing that number of bikers in a suburban location

Imagine the bellows of distain that would have been flying if they had have done a B/B check point :shit: the crys of misjustice coming from the suits & wannabe outlaws would have been laughable

And then you'll get:

"what gives the pigs the right to come onto the rally site and expect people to blow into their gizmos....." kind of people making just that comment.

Or "I was in the Portaloo and missed out" waaa..

Or "I blew Failed Youth, woohoo, I'm under, I can have another drink"

Or "Test me, test me, I'm not riding but I just want to see if I'll pass"

Ad infinitum, ad neauseum......

Ummmmmmm, seem to have missed the point, I am fine with police having a checkpoint. but it was poorly placed poorly manned and poorly organised,

Your above comments would just be like usual day for ya--- water off a ducks back. If there was breath testing offered in site , I'd use it . and so would alot of others.

Aggree To be honest I like the rally organisers idea, and as has been done for the brass, they buy testers that patrons of the rally can use. They have not had BB around the Brass for a few years now?

There was talk in previous posts of why they could not do it onsite, but then if they did it onsite, then you would have the public outcry that cops are looking after bikers.
If they did it once or more, then would there be an expectation that they will do it again and again and each event??
"come here big boy-blow into this... whoa, you a bit over... go sleep it off" I bet they wont do that out side my house on Sunday morning.
There has to be a level of personal responsibilty for yourself.
Look at how many fello bikers have come to greif or fatality over the last couple of years, there own personal fault or not, I know it makes me cringe every time, "not another, and feeling for their extended familys.
It did not appear to flash of a setup with the BB at the Hare, but no doubt succeeded in raising awareness.
Sure was a litle painful idling down the drive at such a speed, Being on the grumbling griso sure lessened the pain.

Spot on. When GB and I rode through (10-15 minutes after you perhaps) there were only three cops on the road doing the testing. No wonder it took us 20-25 (maybe more) minutes to leave!

An interesting thought - if everyone had ridden straight through (i.e. as in doing a runner) I reckon there would have been nothing they Police could have done. There were no cops further up the road in Waimate or beyond (or at least we never saw any) and there were no Police cars in the immediate vicinity. Easy. The fact that nobody tried, as far as I know, is remarkable.

I think what buggered it up for the Police was having to cover the northern exit (behind the stage) as well, a distinct lack of forethought on their part.

Many years ago , my first rallies were with a group who always stopped at every pub on the way, two day trip ex chch was the norm for the brass, falling off bikes, leaving with a hangover the next day, with a jack an a joint to kick start things. I threw in the towel for a few years disillusioned , couldn't carry on seeing the stuff that was happening and be involved in the potential disaster-crash.

They still doing the same today, One missed the march hare on his 8th DIC charge the week before, another only just out of 3mths jail for drink driving.

I've got a family, and have seen how bad these guys are like on the road, I fully support the tough line on drink driving and breath testing SD.

Lets hope both sides learn from this rally and next year is better.

The only bit that peeved me off was I wanted to go through the gorge... but Xaria had to put some air in her tyres... and I couldn't be bothered waiting in queue twice so I had by by pass the gorge and the breath test the second time round and go boring way home....

didn't bother me or Xaria... as we don't normally drink a lot on the saturday (I do that on the friday)... even then its not a hell of a lot. Thing was there was rumours Saturday afternoon, so you were warned.

To tell the honest truth it can be hard to tell if you are over the limit or not many years a go we did tests and studies... times I thought I would be over the limit I wasn't and would legally be able to drive (though for me morally I would have gone back to bed) and other times I thought I would be fine I wasn't. This was done at polytech study, and only the testers knew exactly how much alcohol was served... So saying if you feel that you have had to much to drink isn't quite true either as it works in reverse I feel fine and blip sorry you are over... every person is different...

Personally it should be zero... but that is going to cause issues as well 1 standard drink over the limit but I had that 3 hrs ago with a 18 course meal and a ciesta

At the end of the days Dudes, you have to be careful, as its not just the cops interfering with your ride, home, its how the booze effects you, and bollox to those who say they ride better, I have been to too many pissed up driver/ accidents to listen to people winging about cops doing breath tests........

Innocent folk have died walking back from a pub becuase some selfish prick has had too many, lost control ofo their vehicle and mowed them over, because of these ignorant drivers/riders.......its not big, not clever and you take your chance, and if you loose serves you right.......Am going over to Sweden and Denmark in August, and thats Zero over there, so tea and coffee for me all the way, which is great as I know the rules and will abide by them.

Why rush home early from a rally, cook yourself something, snooze a bit, hang out and relax, you dont have to breeze back at the crack of dawn......to Re-Affirm if you feel like shit, you are more likely to be over the limit.

That aside, I really hope you guys had a AWESOME time even thought the leave out of the site was a pain......I love the MARCH HARE, and really missed being there and hanging out with like minded folk.......

Cio 4 now......

Agree intiely, however I doubt anyone leaving a rally is in that state... if they are then fuck em I just think there time, effort and money could be spent beter elsewere... however a reminder to bikers does no harm.

Well C@#Ts like that should be locked up for good... attempted murder? hey ya right the same does still happen today there are groups out there that think a ride is a pub crall (had a reminder of this on a ride I did last weekend) Like poker runs, these are the sorts that should be tested and locked up.

Woddy, SD... I hope to never see the results of drinking and driving like you guys have it is a reason why I could not do your jobs, and it is interesting no one commented on my prievious post linking to B.A.D.D that is were more money, time and effort needs to be spent. post #202 http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/116929-March-Hare-Rally-(5-7-March-2010)?p=1129682205#post1129682205

Heres a dumb thought, seen as the rally needs a liquor licence to sell in order to get a licence they have to provide a breath tester, in fact it should be compulsary for all pubs etc to have one... if nothing else at least its an atempt to do the right thing.

The march hare club have just had a debrief on monday night re the rally and improvements that can be made. One thing that has been passed is that we are buying a commercial breath screening device for the club use and to use at the rally. We will also be leasing several more so that anyone leaving the site will have the option of a breath screening test prior to departure.

Good stuff, got to be a step in the right direction - make sure you get a unit that can stand a lot of tests in a short time, some take a minute or two to 'purge' alcohol fumes from a test that showed alcohol presence.
