Afternoon all my loverly KB'rs hope you had a good lunch.

Im just buildinging up a mount for my camera this weekend and just wanted some input on my plan.

basically, the mount screws into the fairings in the existing bolt holes so I dont have to drill and holes in the fairing,
on the front left hand side of the bike under the handlebars

http://www.pyrocam.orcon.net.nz/KB/bikecam/cammountpoints.jpg

I intend to cut a plate that will be flush with the top of said fairing similar to
http://www.pyrocam.orcon.net.nz/KB/bikecam/metalpart1.jpg

Then weld on the side plate that should run 90' degress from the first plate and run flush with the side of the bike
http://www.pyrocam.orcon.net.nz/KB/bikecam/metalpart1.5.jpg

then weld a small plate on the bottom sticking out from bike perpendicular
http://www.pyrocam.orcon.net.nz/KB/bikecam/metalpart2.jpg
and drill a hole for a bolt to got up the bottom that will screw into the tripod hole on the bottom of the camera
http://www.pyrocam.orcon.net.nz/KB/bikecam/metalpart3screw.jpg

So in the end it should work like this
http://www.pyrocam.orcon.net.nz/KB/bikecam/diagram.jpg

Equipment I intend to use
Gas welding kit
Drill
and a file for edges
maybe some spray paint to avoid rusting.
and some sort of rubber feet to help absorb vibrations to go on the side between the bike fairing and the mount.
1 bolt (for camera) and proberly a dozen washers as my bolt is a bit too long
metal scraps

Limitations:
has to be removable.
as ugly as my bike is, it still shouldnt get any uglier
has to cost $0
If at all possible Id like to use as much of the junk I have before the inorganic comes around. also its more fun to make stuff work with what youve got than to go buy something.
cant have too much vibration
well. duh.

anyway, flood me with your constructive critizms.

Good luck in building it and I truely hope it is successful.... let us know how you get on.

if you aint got enough junk around home to do the job, go and check out the other inorganic stuff on the side of the road around West Auckland. At this stage you dont have to $300 to be able to do it.

Yeah good luck.

Just make sure those fairing bolts are long enough to grip both the bount and whatever they scre into at the moment. Oh, and thanks for the plan. I've just copyrighted it. Ya build it now and you owe me $50!

wow, you're bored today..

Have you seen the cam mount Swanman and I made up for our bikes? Just a slab of alu that Swanny managed to get hold of, then we marked 3 holes on the filler cap, drilled the holes on the slab, then one for the camera (all being precise, we didn't just guess (most of it anyway), then take out the 3 screws from your filler, put the slab on top, then screw back in. easy. well, fairly easy.

Plus, being on the tank, it gives it some protections, where as on the side there, it's a bit out in the open if you had a slow slide. Your camera would get taken out quickly.

An alternative (but not good for students) is to get a lipstick/bullet camera. Mount that with tape where ever you please, then run wires back to your boot/backpack where it's plugged into your camcorder recording. This also stops the wind noise, but you still get the noise of the engine.

Your's looks a bit more complex than it has to be.. simplify

mounting bracket? whats that?

we just use some foam chip underlay and strap the camera on with 100mph tape

works for me :D

If you get a nice bit of flat aluminuim plate (or the case from an old PC), you should be able to bend it to shape.
Then on the side that is touching the fairing stick (glue or double sided tape) some closed cell foam. you could use a sleeping roll but that is a little thick i think. or you can get sheets of thinner stuff from spotlight or the warehouse.

If the vibes are too much then you could use a bungee to hold it down.

We got some great results on a touring holiday in Tuscany.
Quite simply, the Mrs was pillion and with a little practice and dexterity she was able to hold the camera really low and with a wide angle lens we got some terrific shots which varied in angle and view rather than just being stuck in one position on the tank or wherever. Naturally she had to learn how to hang off a bit and shoot without looking through the view finder. So it was a bit hit and miss but the wide angle lens made up for the uncertainty. Editing these shots with off-bike cutaways (sorry about the jargon, I'm in the industry) and cutting it all to actuality sound mixed with music made it all the better to watch time and time again. Good luck with your movie making.

you got all the gear you need??

I could help you but I'm away this weekend. Next week OK though if you need. BJ has done this sort of thing so is a good source fof ideas/thoughts.

Worse case you have to use 2 rolls of tape!

my 2 cents says that you might have vibration issues, try and rubber mount it on you bolts and so forth.

But in the past all we have done is spent about $10 on tape and taped it to the pillion peg or where ever, even done that on a track day.

but if you want to get really keen, have a chat to loosebruce and he has a really good set up that bolts to the gas cap.

Also I think gpmotorcycles make the tank mounted ones for 1fiddy$ I'm looking at one because I'm lazy and dont have the equipment... just alittle FYI.

Good luck though!

Pad between the fairing and the metal, thick felt, layers from an old sweater or polarfliece ... otherwise you're gonne end up with some bad chips and vibration marks on the fairing...

Good luck

Edit : that might also help dampen vibration

First prototype works really really well.
no vibrations. alot simplier. need a firewire cable to show you how it came out.

I mounted the camera upside down on a mount with a peice of plastic to correct the angle.

looks like:
http://www.pyrocam.orcon.net.nz/KB/bikecam/cameramount.jpg

its too dark to get a piccy with it on the bike

also I put a couple of wraps of tape around the outside to reduce vibration and to make it safer.

Oh for a firewire cable.

yeah I got camera on contents.

Im going to remake it a bit safer though.

and perhaps the right way up.

also. point. Id really like to get some of the bike in. just a little. makes it easier to reference.
Ill upload a crappy usb stream soon

But Pyrocam, the quality is really shite
-yes, I droped it down to make it smaller. also I need a better technique (other than my 1am hack job) of flipping the video as the way I do it drops the quality dramatically

But Pyrocam, wheres the color.
- Night Vision baby yeah
of course this doesnt work so well for this situation. I might try without it next time so I get the city lights blah blah (Ps riding at night is way cool)

But Pyrocam...
- whatever. its only a test to show you that it records mint without too much vibration.

If anyone has the bandwidth I can organise a higher quality.

PS: I really really really want a firewire cable if anyone wants to lend me one for a week.

You spent too much time on your side of the road.
I saw no attempt at wheelies or stoppies, and nothing to suggest the back wheel lost traction at any point.

2/10 for that attempt. You could at least have tried riding along a footpath or grass verge. :msn-wink:

a hell of a lean you've got there..
I've got a FW cable you can use for a bit if you want. I got mine of TradeMe for something like $15..

Next time you're round, I'll show you my front and rear mounts. The rear one I haven't used yet, still finishing it

Me or the camera angle. camera angle is easy enough to adjust with a proper mount

Thanks !
no unfortuantly. so do I now. had an intresting ride home.
going to take it for a spin now.

Right click then save target as. Come on man you should know this.

(edit) just tried that, doesn't work. Let me see if I still have it then I'll see about emailing it to you. May have deleted it though...

Thats cool, I thought I had lost my nut for a minute there - good to know I'm still relativley sane :niceone:

yeah I deleted it after I realised that 'the person who was riding my bike that day' shouldnt have overtaken cars on the right hand side at an intersection.

On the otherhand I do have an hour of loverly traffic recorded. I didnt know there was a game on :(

anyways Im going to edit it up now see if I cant compile something cool tonight,.

If anyone wants a peek at the old footage or what im up to then PM me or preferable ICQ me.

being that its friday night Im not going to be here 100% but go nuts anyway!
