View Full Version : Have tinted visors been banned?

A mate of mine was going on about getting a tinted visor. When I eventually see it, it's no darker than my playstation tan. He said this was cause fully tinted visors had been outlawed, following similar rules to tinted windows in cars.

Is this true? Because it sounds ridiculous.

No, still perfectly legal afaik. Local Suzuki dealer sells them, I and most of my friends if not all ride with one.

Do you use a light tint or a dark tint? Oh and the brand of helmet would help too. Thanks...

Mine has a chrome mirror finish and has been purchased in last 3 months...

So far so good.

I normally have a good idea of what the rules are. I didn't think I would miss that had it come into effect.

Didn't you have that problem with an imported pommy cop, that was using the UK law here?

Bought a dark smoke Shoei visor 'bout a month ago. Pitch black from the outside when worn - not a problem.

The Arai visors are now selling at about $160 or so. Bloody expensive I reckon - might just have to wait for that one...

I've never had an issue (except I can't swap now, cos I can't get the clear one off) - I know the dark one has "not for daytime use" or some such written on it.

You can get them in different levels of darkness an also different colours as well as the iridium ones.

They are daytime use in the UK, but there's no legislation in NZ unless they wanted to call them tinted car windows in which case there is an index detailing how much light they must let through.

Mates talk shit. Don't listen to them.

Mate's just bought himself a dud visor.

I'll have to break the news to him.

When i bought my helmet I got a smoked one which is the darkest for my shoei but you can still see through it from the outside a bit. I have noticed the Arais are pitch black but I haven't seen any other shoeis with tinted visors that I have had a good look at.

It's not against the law to have a dark visor.

My concern is my own ability to see - say into dark areas when coming from a bright area. Bad enough with a clear visor especially when the sun is low (I ride a lot in the early mornings).

I'd like to try the different levels of tint on my helmet and check 'em out for myself but the shop doesn't have any that I can try - they are all covered with protective film and the shoppies are reluctant to pull it off for a test run...

Maybe I ought to go talk directly with Dolds...I sure as hell ain't about to shell out $160 for something I haven't tried...

Tinted visors are great in full daylight but need to be treated with caution.

I did the ride down to Whangamomona one day with my full tint visor and rode into the tunnel along the way and suddenly shit myself when I discovered I couldn't even see the front of the bike that I was sitting on.

I just wear shades in my helmet. Helps when riding in evening so when it get dark later on you can just remove sunnies. Tinted visors suck real bad if you get caught out late in when it gets dark.

Wow, I was going to ask the current price for a Visor - thats HUGE!

Absolutely.

That same day, coming back late, I had to ride with the visor up.

With the amount of bugs out that night I thought I was likely to lose an eye.

I ride with my Visor up anyhow, I love the wind - and wear a faithful pair of orange tinted shades, which are great in the late afternoon/at the end of the day, as they suck untold light into my vision.

An electric screen helps. The bad news is, the said faithful shades finally broke recently after years and years.....

If I wear my prescription sunnies under a clear visor, they distort vision to hell 'cause they are polarizing lenses...not so good.

My regular specs are photochromic, and do help quite a bit, but I'd still like a tinted visor for daytime riding...

I don't. Not after riding into a swarm once...

Í'm starting to wonder if today's motorcyclists are the same breed of folk that tried for centuries to deny that the world was round?

Only last century they designed helmets with internal sun visors - get with the times, get with the program. They work. It's that simple.

A late evening ride back over the hill and I flick the visor up, down, up, down between corners where I know I'm about 2 seconds away from sunstrike or sudden shade. Wow, it takes all of 0.7 seconds to operate. Not that difficult. You would think that todays' informed motorcyclists should be able to catch on.

I'm just waiting for a helmet to come out that can cure this %$#@$ crap weather!

Ugly Fish shades are good. I had one myself until I lost them on the Rimutaka hills

I've got a Shark S650 which has the option to fit an external sun visor on top of the original (clear visor)
Great concept (much like the internal visor on high end lids) but it has flaws
1. it wobbles about a bit when in the raised position and have the feeling it would rip itself off above 100Kmh
2. there's two visors to keep clean
3. as it sits on top of the clear visor it is scratching the protective coating of the clear visor along the leading edge. This isn't in the sight line but it is annoying.

It's $40 cheaper than a 'proper' sun visor but I can't recommend it. Especially as the Shark has an excellent clip on/off visor system anyway so when it gets dark it's only 30s to change visors if needed. Or have a decent pair of aviators

Glasses / specs have been on the market for years that are clear but tint themselves in the sun, probably old technology now. Wonder if any of the helmet manufacturers have or are going to use it????

Those "Transition" glasses used to be terrible. I hope they're better now. I remember some kid had some when I was at school and they were always going dark while he was sitting in class. There are also some progressively tinted visors available

I own a LS2 Delta flip helmet. It is the greatest as it has an inbuilt Sunvisor that just flips down with the flick of a switch.

Not too bad for $270 either.

As MD has already said, get with the times people.
We both have the Cayberg V2 lids with internal visor.
Best thing I ever done purchasing one of them.
At the time, I had to import mine from the UK but apparently there is someone in NZ now selling them.

Check them out..... http://www.cabergv2.com/V2gallery2.asp

I have both a clear and a tinted visor for my AGV TiTech. I always have a little sport bag on my bike when I ride, plenty of room for the visor not in use, and takes about 15 seconds to switch. I am really happy with the dark visor, it is full tint and looks black from the outside. Works for me, anyway.

Anyone tried these before?
Short lifespan, although could be worth it

Edit: That website seems to be compromised, I keep getting Trojan alerts.

I have been using Fog City hyperoptik visor inserts for years. They're bloody good! Tint to quite a dark cobalt blue in the sunlight, and are virtually clear in poor light. They cost a hundy, and are a bit of a pain in the arse to fit to the visor.... but worth it IMHO

That's good feedback from someone who uses one. I thought I'd google it and came across the webbikeworld review which completely trashes it. How do you find the blue tint to look through?

Blue tint is really good!
I like not having to piss around changing visors etc.
My original hyperoptik stick on gave up the ghost after 6 odd years (wouldn't tint anymore).
Just make sure you VERY carefully install them on your visors.
I recommend them
