View Full Version : Priming - Light vs Dark Universe

I just watched an interesting documentary about 'how to make good decisions'. It was about how different things we interact with affect how we make decisions and one interesting theory was called 'priming' - an interaction with an object or situation which would affect your response to a following situation. In this case it was holding a hot drink vs holding a cold drink before 'interviewing' a person, and the affected outcome was the persons decision of whether or not to hire that person based on their brief interaction. Those who were asked to hold a warm cup of coffee were more welcoming and friendly, and in the end said they would hire the person they spoke with. Those who held a cold cup of soft drink were less welcoming in the interaction and generally said they wouldn't hire the person. The interviewee was kept the same throughout and the same questions were asked etc.

When I just sat down at the computer I started wondering if the light vs dark universe may have an affect on your likeliness to respond negatively or abrasively to posts compared to how you would react in a real world situation... what do you think?

:corn:

*you're probably using the Dark Universe, aren't you?

Yes, I study Psychology at University.

I use the Light Universe because I can see better with the lights on...

I voted wtf, simply cos you forgot my option, i use dark and my post are more awesome (positive if you will). That white one sears the eyes and make me angry posterer. White is chaos anyways, black is order

I use the Light Universe because vBulletin was designed to work with it (as in, the product comes with it). The Dark Universe is add add on.

So which do you think will work better, has the least bugs, and get the best support?

You've completely missed the point, the question is whether you believe the colour of the screen affects your mood when posting. Obviously what ever you have it set to is making you stupid.

I use the dark universe as I'm a creature of the night. No, I meant to say I'm a creature of habit. When I first joined KB the site was in the Dark; after a few months I discovered the Light but by then it hurt my eyes to look at it! Seriously!

Most likely if it had been set to default to the Light and that's what I'd gotten used to, I'd possibly have stuck to that. It takes me a while to adapt to seeing something different on my monitor, and if you really wanted to cheese me off all it would take is someone to keep changing my settings so that things aren't where I expect them to be. Uh, no offers of that please...

So where do I fit in? With patrick?

I use the Dark screen in a darker room and the light screen in better lighting, easier on the eyes.......is logical

No, don't be so hard on yourself. Nobody fits in with patrick, he's in a world/league of his own.

Oh no, hang on, there might be a catfish or two there as well.

I'm now using "test" but it looks a lot like "The Dark Zone" apart from the heading banner

Light universe! And I try to be nice, but I guess I'm always like that...

But one thing you will hopefully learn in your psych study is how to write less biased questionnaires ;)

I use the light universe and much of what I read on KB really fucks me off. Perhaps changing to the dark universe may help in that regard.

Okay,
I used to use Light Universe, now that the update has happened I have actually switched to the Dark Universe...
Seems apparent that I am a Rebel to what Vbulletin defaults to.....

All the same, it doesn't actually effect my attitude towards to what I write on KB.
What is written already effects that.

I do see where you are coming from WRT the idea of what you see influences your thoughts.

I wonder if there was a "Red Zone" if people's posts would be more aggressive and abusive than they already are... :shit::laugh:

Prior to the site upgrade, there was a Pink Hell(TM) for a select few. It worked a treat.

Seriously, if things fuck me off that much I'm in the wrong place. Take television or example - OFF! Can't be fucked watching that wind-up bullshit drivel, but some people deliberately feed themselves on it, and wonder why they always feel really angry about the things they see, and then angry about the other normal interactions in their lives.

I think what affects us mostly, is our daily levels of self-esteem. It's easy to be happy and positive when everything's going right, but life doesn't always work that way. Things don't work out on occasion, and that just chips little bits off us, sometimes enough to make us vulnerable to something larger, and then we respond as if thats the whole problem, when its just the final straw. Add to it bad habits, like feeding the mind harmful material such as TV or negative self-speak, and you have someone ready to angrily cut someone up for almost no reason. I'm pretty glad I'm not regularly around someone such as this. I see it from time to time, but I reassure myself it's their heart attack and not mine.

Hehe, have a fun day! :sunny:

Dark universe at home, light universe at work. There's no software at work that has a black screen so it'd be a bit obvious I'm not working. Not that I get much "playtime" of late anyhoo...

It's a peculiar phenomenon. I didn't believe it at first, and the guy who came up with principle has been ridiculed for it - but the more you look at the examples the more it makes sense. All I know is that next time I go to talk to NZDF recruiting I'm gonna make sure the person is drinking coffee!

Do you find though, that in the short period after being pissed off by the TV you are also more likely to be negative towards things in your surroundings compared to if you had simply turned the TV off because your favourite show had just finished.

There is a pretty good chance of that....
In fact, I would be cautious if they weren't drinking coffee anyway!

agree with the short period of of negativity staying with you after the fact......those stupid talkshows they used to have on tv years back would piss me off to no end, stopped watching tv during the day cause they were just full of idiots who had nothing better to do than be on tv complaining about their problems....idiots!!
See gettting aggro just thinking about it.
Anyways light versus dark...meh dont really think it makes a difference to me! Use the dark and will always use the dark!
Come to the dark side...you know you want to!!!!
