Really there needs to be a generic little microcontroller display dohickey that connects to the tacho and the road speed sensor, and figures it out for itself.

It is a problem generic to the Sv. I do the same.

The first of the R5 Yamaha, the predecessor of the RD350, actually had a 6 speed box, but with 6th gear blanked off so it was not able to be selected. This was done because in testing they found it was possible to shift from 6th to 1st. Imagine doing that at 100 mph. They could have used a gear indicator!!

Yerrr...well ya have to totally lose sight of the road to see the speedo being as 'ow it is so much lower than the tach. And that 800rpm difference between 5th and 6th does make about 10km/hr difference to speed...enough to put you into ticketing territory...

Hi,i checked but it does not look like the Oxford agent here brings in the Gear indictors, can`t find it in there online stock, i could try phone them monday.
Not sure how these compare on price/usability but i can get you a Starlane Engear indicator with shift light $185.
I would have to get it in . I`ve not had them before. But i would back it up with help - warranty.
PS :While i was typing- Yes as above" cycle treads" would do you a Oxford if they have them.

Mmmm...I have often attempted to select seventh gear with a six speed box...s'pose I could always look at the speedo as well as the tach...:whistle:Thats what microcontrollers are good at. Look at tach, look at speedo, do math, draw a number on display.
I can tell roughly if I am in 6th gear. 100k = 4,500rpm. 120k = 5,000rpm.
2nd gear catches me out if I'm not counting them down. Blatting into a roundabout I emphatically do not want to discover 1st gear lest I lock up the rear (vtwin). So I count them. It's a pain.
I try and ride around town in 4th gear, so I always know there are two down-changes to take a corner in 2nd, so as soon as I enter any 50k limit its down two gears straight away so I can easily remember where I am.

just buy a street triple, got change lights + gear indicator

thanks for all the replies
i shall ponder.......
and street triple..............no thanks.......'sposed to be great bikes, just not my bag baby
things happen way to quickly to spend much time checking out the revs and speedo in the twisties on me bike then working stuff out(rev counter is difficult to see at best of times on me bike)...........so a plain n simple gear indicator would alleviate some of my thoughts for other things, like........entry point, vanishing point, surface hazards etc
to quote keith code here.......well kinda......you have only a fixed amount of attention to spend .........the more spent on un neccessary things......the less is left for the important stuff like where am i going, where is that car going, and what is the bike doing. anyhoo
i found a couple on ebay for under 10 bucks brand new! looks like someone has built them themselves from a kit or summat. so ive emailed em..... and see what the reply is.

opinions from those in the know about such things please
again
thanks for the replies

you could try simon at powersport (http://www.powersport.co.nz/). they are a new zealand based company and brilliant to deal with. i dont think they stock them but he might be able to get you one.

I have one of these, magic little device....especially for old farts like me that can't count.
You have to program them to your bike and the better you do this the more reliable they will be. The joy is that it's a simple process and you can do it as often as you like until its working perfectly for your bike.

When Suzuki bought out their 1st models with a gear position indicater, years ago, we were disgusted, If you couldn't tell what gear you were in by the feel of the bike through the seat and the bars you had no right to be riding, I still feel that way to a degree. If you are in tune with your bike, the noise/vibes/ response etc will tell you whether there is still another gear in there somewhere.

I think I agree, but UNTIL you're in tune it would be a help. My V has a nice indicator for sixth gea,r it says OD, even the book calls it overdrive and unless it's doing over 110 it don't like it.

You could say you don`t need a rev counter, just go by feel. Fairings weren`t to popular when they first start on production bikes.Gear indicators make more sense , on a race track. Were your deciding on were to shift, and gearing etc.

Quite often there are lectures on KB from those who "get it" directed at those who "don't", suggesting they "have no business on the road".
The fact is, "bikes" and "the road" is for everyone, experienced or otherwise. :finger:

If you ca'nt find it in N.Z, import it, it'll be cheaper anyway.

I do the same on the Hornet. I made a mental note to check what my revs are in 6th, at 100km/h on the flat. Now I just check that i'm at 4.5 before I check i'm in top gear.
A gear indicator would be handy.

You better go and tell all those racing drivers and riders that they shouldn't be operating a vehicle then since most displays (http://www.translogicuk.com/images/8tls-md1.jpg) have a great big gear indicator number smack in the middle.
But then again they probably won't give a flying fuck about what you think.
