Today I knocked a guy off his scooter. My first ever at fault accident. Fortunately it was at about 10 km/h so he was not hurt, however I still feel really bad about it!!!Especially as I am a motorcyclist myself. I was in the Pajero and it has a really bad blind spot and it was pissing down with rain, and I just didn't see him until the last second....completely my fault. His scoot is a bituva mess. I think AMI will have to buy him a new one

I feel really stink about this

The A-Pillar on a Pajero like my one is ridiculously wide at about 12 cm's wide. This is not an excuse. The accident was my fault completely. It is not the fault of my vehicle - i just simply was careless today and I had an accident. What else can I say

Aww poor scooter rider....be thankful it wasn't anything bigger in your blindspot or it might of been two vehicles for AMI

Just because your premiums were paid ... on time ... and up to date. Things insurance related do not always end there ...

Unlike most other people on here, most likely you, when I screw up I will actually stick up my hand and say that I have screwed up...like today. My first thoughts were with the scooter rider, to make sure he was OK, my second thought was with his bike. Turns out he is uninsured however I am fully insured, so seen as it WAS my fault he will be covered by my insurance

I am a motorcyclist of 25 years experience so if your on a Scooter, any jap bike, a Ducati 1098 or a Harley I am your brother

I am a motorcyclist of 30+ years of experience. A slightly lesser amount with insurance companys ... whom tend to try and recoup funds from guilty parties ... especially during this "recession" and after court cases ... from the guilty parties ...

Police WERE notified of the accident ... right ??? By law they ARE required to be notified of an injury accident within 24 hours. Non injury accident within 7 days (from not so good memory)

Stink, so this one was your fault but man, those scooter riders (getting them all with the same brush for good measure) take some stupid risks, I see them zipping around central auckland all the time. Nutters.

this one was my fault... I know some Scooter riders are insane but this one was all good. ...it was me that stuffed up today..... I feel really bad for making him all bruised and sore tonight. I have just talked to him....Simon is his name. He's a good sort. I will make sure he has a new scooter to ride sometime soon

I'm glad everyone involved is ok. I wouldn't think it to be too often that a cage driver would post a "My Fault" thread. Yes I know ITH is a motorcyclist too, but cudos.

You have no way of knowing if scooterguy is a KBer or knows of US. So good on ya for letting people know that scooterguy is alright.

what can I say.....knocking someone off a bike is a shit experience! The guy I hit is called Simon...seems like a bloody good sort. He has a few bruises but is otherwise alright....could have been a whole lot worse.

Well the way you're handling it is to be commended, if I ever get knocked off I would hope that at least the person would take responsibility in the same manner.

We all fuck up now and again. Just the fact you are fronting up to your responsibility and aren't trying to take anyone for a ride, means you actually haven't got anything to feel stink about. At least not since he wasn't hurt badly! I mean, we have to move forward right?

Just because your premiums were paid ... on time ... and up to date. Things insurance related do not always end there ...Aye yup. @OP, also watch out you don't void your insurance by admitting fault in an accident.

People seem to think that insurance companies are all about paying for crashes, but reality is they are all about worming out of paying anything they can, and screwing everyone else for everything they can, so be vigilant.

I know what you mean about visibility in 4wds though - even my surf I have to peer around the windscreen pillars to clear them. Lucky it has huge mirrors.

Blindspots though - stay the fuck out of them or go under someones wheels. Simple as that.

Tis a brave man who puts up their hand, and an honourable one. Be glad it all worked out ok. Could've been you on your bike too - and, as you say, he should get a new bike out of it......... even if it is a scooter

I hope you didn't say that at the scene?

I don't know how binding it is but a lot of insurance companies advise you to never admit to being at fault otherwise you can void your insurance.

Interesting to see this fromyour point of view....I hope other's will see just how easy it is to have this happen and as bike riders you need to be extra vigiliant.
This experience has been a real 'eye opener' for you. I'm glad the rider wasn't seriously hurt and you are man enough to put your hand up and say 'my fault', not many do.

Could be more of that "motion camouflage" where the scooter has been coming straight at you and you haven't seen him because he wasn't moving across/against the background. Then he suddenly appears, termed "looming" . The military use this for their missiles. Dragonflies use it too.

Firstly good on you.

If you lodge a liability claim with your insurance company they will give you a claim number that you can give to Mr Scooter. He can take that to his repairer so he can get the ball rolling on the repair.

Shouldn't you be on a Pajero fourm ranting abut fuckwits on scooters?

Accepting responsibility for your actions instead of trying to blame someone else went out decades ago

Good on ya for admitting what you done on here. Takes balls.. I cant say that i would post on here if i knocked a motorcyclist off his perch.. There goes my name for the rest of my life..

We all make mistakes and some of us feel bad after them (this too shall pass), as we should but so many don't. Just out of interest, was he wearing any gear apart from the lid? Makes my skin crawl to see all those bare knees and hands.

First off good on you for admitting fault and doing it on here, takes balls and a lot of others would have.

However only notify the police if you want a careless driving charge on you record. Yup it might be law but what they dont know wont hurt you. I know a case where a person slid off the road, hit a tree, no one involved but they told the police and got charged for careless.

Glad to hear scooter person was ok

However ... the insurance company may see things a little differently, they may ask for a police report for the accident ... and if the Police say ... What accident ??(Failure to report ...a cut finger is an injury accident) and if said scooter person develops a medical problem due to the accident, and ACC asks about the accident ... things may get a little complicated ...

ACC would still class this as a motorcycle accident ... AND ... ACC will want their statistics to be accurate ...

They ask and if the police aint involved they dont care. My sister used to deal with this stuff so I know what I am on about

We all make mistakes and some of us feel bad after them (this too shall pass), as we should but so many don't. Just out of interest, was he wearing any gear apart from the lid? Makes my skin crawl to see all those bare knees and hands.

Yep he was wearing basic but essential gear, full face helmet, some armoured pants and gloves & proper boots. His jacket looked like a bit too casual to be a proper motorcycle one but I might be wrong about that. It had been raining all morning so he was geared up so I can be thankful for that. No bear knees either thank god, otherwise he certainly would have been more hurt. I think he rides it from Wellington to Palmy quite often hence the better than average gear, for a scooter rider. This is a lesson that basic & proper motorcycle gear does pretty much avoid injuries in minor accidents at least.

To all the people with insurance concerns, I have sorted it out. I work in that line of business anyway, and as the accident was my fault, I just had to be truthful about what happened, and hopefully my insurance company will sort the scooter repairs / replacement for the other party. I will be checking in a few days to make sure it does go through properly for him.
