They let the race go an extra lap, Stroud was in the lead on lap 15 and had a moment and Bugden got round him and crossed the line in front on the new last lap 16.

You can just imagine the conversation in the flag box, "Oh no, Strouds in the lead, we dont like him 'cos hes a genuinely top all 'round bloke, what shall i do?" ," let it go another lap, that'll fuck 'im".

Yep apparently the rule is race to the flag not the number of laps.
In a controversial finish to the last Superbike race at Teretonga today , Robbie Bugden took a close victory from Andrew Stroud. The race was a close affair between the two Suzuki pilots and Craig Shirriffs on a Honda. With all three share the battle for the lead at some stage during the race , in the closing stages Stroud took the lead and was leading on the fifteenth lap, however the white flag was not shown and an extra lap taken, Stroud had a moment at the hairpin on this lap which allowed Bugden through for the win.
The official rule dictated that you must run to the flag , not the laps. Bugden therefore was declared the winner.
Top Results:
1) Robbie Bugden Suzuki
2) Andrew Stroud Suzuki
3) Craig Shirriffs Honda.

Whit flag wasn't displayed at the end of lap 14. As per MNZ rules we race from flag to flag, so therefor the 16 lap race result stands. Bit of a fuckup but really, it's the fairer way of closing the issue. Otherwise you've got the argument that no one knew it was the last lap.

Yeah, fair enough. I think the real issue here is that there appears to be officials in the sport that cant count to fourteen.

You have to wonder about MNZ I know they get a bashing frequently on here but it is resonably easy to count to 14 then 15, but also there is F all News about the champs, watched the News tonight and there was nothing and adding insult to injury they had coverage of people rollerblade racing for fucks sake and of course the nzv8's got time.

Yeah and the thing is that this wasn't the first time a cock up happened over the weekend. In the first 125 race the white flag was shown for 2 laps then the chequered. 3 guys pulled in after assuming the chequered flag was being waived one lap after the white, it wasn't and thus they should have been dnf'd. But for some reason the officials decided to go against the rules and declare the race at 10 laps, which was still under the white flag. The eleventh lap was chequered, go figure...

Ahh, so they cant even count to ten? im beginning to wonder if they can count at all.
And and and!!! they didnt run sidecars after saying that all classes had to run all five rounds in order for that class to be elegible for NZ championship status. Oh well, so long as they can count to five i guess.

A similar thing happened not too many years ago at Teretonga. White flag displayed while Haldane led Rees, next lap they crossed the line and Haldane had an onboard lap timer, counting correctly according to the alloted race laps, having seen the white flag concluded the race had been run, although he hadn't seen the chequered flag. Rees kept at it and by the time Haldane opened the throttle agian it was too late to catch Rees. The race went to Rees...

Flags and their useage can be a bastard sometimes.
I remember back in '93 at Baypark, I crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of Westie and the finish flaggie forgot to give me the white flag. He did however give Westie the white flag behind me. I continued like a crazied lunatic, and stuffed up the right hander, only for Westie to pass me. I thought, no biggie, I'll get him back in a couple of corners - still at least another lap to go. Well, I came around the last turn and low and behold - the chequered flag. I fisnished second!!! I told the finisher that I was right f@3ked off!! He said 'Tell someone who cares'!!!
Still to this day I can't believe the reply!! :nono:

I think the correct action was taken when the white flag was missed and the rule to ride to the flags is an understandable option…but I do feel for Andrew, he timed the ride perfectly…and the split second he spent thinking about what was going on no doubt had something to do whit him missing that corner and getting taken………on the 16th….

I was in christchurch over the weekend of the nationals and the TV was inundated with ads for the races and I saw several trailers with billboards advertising it on.
The crowd was quite plentiful despite the weather too.
MNZ have done a great job this year
also TV One had a crew come out for the Superbike Grand Prix.

Yes exactly, the crowd for ruapuna is by far the biggest I have seen in my 5-6 years racing. The advertising was great, heard ads on the radio frequently in the days leading up to it and even saw an ad on tv in the first ad break during the 6pm news! They also had a story on 1 news on sunday night, even though there was V8's in invercargill the same day they didn't get a mention.

Yes I agree we should be shown a chequered flag to signal a finish lap. But what if there were more laps??
Um, wouldn't the supplementary regs of each meeting then come into play?? It stated x amount of laps, and no one was notified before hand of an increase in laps. So shouldn't it have been taken back to the stated amount of laps? In the superbike class they measure out their fuel exactly to the 1/2 literage. What if Stroudy had run out of fuel on the extra last lap?? Would he have then been able to protest fairly??

Agree fully, even in F3 some teams measure out the fuel for the duration.
However you always have to put a bit more in, just in case there is a Red Flag situation during the race.
So if there was a Red Flag, and a Restart, then the fuel might have been very tight.
We did get the (F3) bike back with a few fumes left in it after one race at Manfeild.
1/2 a litre per lap for a 400 is darn crazy... but that is what it is using!!!

Yep, after my lil' faux pas I trekked around the circuit to different vantage points and the crowd was pretty healthy despite some dodgy weather. Ruapuna is great not just from a riders perspective, you can see the whole track from nearly anywhere and with that stop bank around the track you can just park your car up on it and view in relative comfort no matter the conditions. Great set up and a great crew running the event.:niceone:

He couldn't have had a sucsessful protest - the rulebook says "run to the flags" and that is what was done. Even though it was a fuck up. The only thing that may have changed would have been the saturday 125 race as if he used that to show earlier decisions against the rulebook they would have had to have changed that result to match the rules.
He said afterwards that he just outbroke himself trying to keep Robbie behind - it could have happend the lap before had he thought that was the last one. He didn't know until after that an extra lap had been run - it wasn't that they had two white flags or something really dumb like that, and he lead all the way around the 16th lap before he made the mistake.
