Grubbermint is saying they are $20 mil in the hole on licensing costs.

Bloody cheek of all you hardworking Kiwis (especially you young uns) to expect to have a licence and not pay through the nose for it.

Who's Next ??????

HA.

Fees will continue to rise until the end of time.

Or the collapse of our society.

Whichever comes first.

I'm betting on the collapse of society.

I don't really have a problem with license fees going up. Compared to other countries, our licenses are very cheap. Too cheap and too easy to get, IMO.
Perhaps if they cost more, people might actually value them.
Nah, would never happen....

Licence hikes take AA by surprise

The Automobile Association says it had no idea the government was about to raise the price of getting a driver's licence.

A full licence will go up by more than $18 under the plan.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce is accusing the previous government of poor financial management leading to a $21.78 million shortfall between the revenue gained from handling licence applications and the actual cost of issuing them.

"While an increase in some fees is necessary, the government recognises the impact of increased costs on New Zealanders and all fee rises have been kept as low as possible.

"I am disappointed about any fee increase but this can't continue to be swept under the rug as it has in the past."

AA spokesman Mike Noon says he was surprised to learn the government was looking to recover costs. He says while the rise is quite steep, the news is not all bad given the license renewal fee drops by $1.30. He says there have been no price increases for licensing since 2001.

Renewing a licence currently costs $44.30 but will drop to $43 under the proposal. A learner licence will rise from $79 to $91.90; restricted is currently $88.20 and would rise to $105.80 and the full licence which is $115.10 will increase to $133.20.

Fees for drivers aged over 75 remain unchanged. Disqualified drivers will have to pay a new fee to reinstate their licence.

It's not a huge rise, so I don't mind. That and I already have my full so its only my truck licences that will be affected now. And its cheaper for us to renew our licences.

I'll have to keep mine in my pocket then. Haven't done anything stupid enough to warrant having to resit a licence, but I can imagine that not having a licence would be the least of my worries if I did.

Pft, it's still way too cheap for a proper license. Although I do see where the objection of paying something for nothing comes from.
