View Full Version : Where can one go to practice wheelies?

Obviously, public roads are out of the question:innocent: Are there any designated "wheelie" practice locations around?
Genie
28th January 2010, 19:42
I doubt it very much....wheelies are frowned upon by the local authorities....find a lonely place and practice, practice, practice until you master the technique. I'm sure others on here can give you the lowdown on the how.

Thanks Genie..... yeah, I'm pretty sure I can get it up on my own.....ummm (so to speak) I've been practicing, very subtlely around the place. I just don't want to be a hoon. Would prefer to find a nice place where its totally legal..... like an abandoned airport runway (unlikely I know) or something similar. Around Auckland, prefereably North Shore.

What bike are you doing them on? My suggestion would be to look around Albany Industrial area and if you see a good place (off the road) then find out how to contact the people who own the land/building and ask them.
I haven't bothered with finding a private place. I have a few on-ramp/quiet motorway stretches that I occasionally use when the time is right but it's a bit touch and go. Already had one close call.

Thankyou, thats a good idea! I'm just on a Gladius 650 so, it will be first gear wheelies..... baby steps at first.

I hear what you're saying, and always respect the opinion of a more experienced biker, which is why I want to find a nice bit of "legal" land area to practice on. As for wrecking my bike...... I reckon very slow and steady practice with proper gear will go a long way to preventing any heartache.

dude... once you DO learn you'll be a massive hoon showing off your skillz to anyone who'll look. Nothing to be ashamed about until you bin it. Then its just funny.
Use a mates bike... and get a spare chain.
And if you insist on popping standups past cops, make sure there is a median barrier between you and them... much more satisfying that way, knowing the U turn will be a long time coming.
TGA Harbour bridge has just such a barrier, and Matt and the boys at MAKZ Gear will wave from his shop door (or call the cops laughing) as you ride over... New Years was so much fun! I'm gonna miss NZ and its mostly unarmed cops. Oz and California are going to be the death of me I think.

Or have a camera on the bike or helmet... looks better for the full throttle loop out or the tankslapper at the end. The crowd loves the blood!

Damn ive been thinking of this for ages, and only just....afterlike 3 years of joining this forum i discovered there is a stunt subthread.
anyways your point on practicing on a mates bike i totaly agree, but a mate wont be happy, so i was thinking since there a tonne of bike schools, is there such place to teach you it? on their own bikes?
honestly, i dont want to wreck my bike. and its tricky with mine. its a 125. honda NXR, so its a road going dirt bike. i can get it up from stationary at the lights in first gear, but it just lacks power and drops back down again.
or maybe i dont know what to do next. but yeah id really like to learn how to do wheelies on the move and keep it up.
theres a guy doing it so easily on my bike....well not MY bike, but you know.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0BHgsVmobo
it dosnt happen so easily when i tried.
so anyone know who i can find to help me get it up? (the bike i mean hahahaha :P)
sorry dont mean to steal the thread by the way

On the NXR, use the pillion pegs, just dont over cook it, cause ya got no easy rear brake.

haha wow man nice pics, that stoppie is just epic.
yeah its just fear really, that all my weight on the back pegs is just gonna make it go over the back.
i should just practice in my street slowly going higher and higher, but i dont wana ruin the clutch or go over the back yeah..... or both..
since ive never done a "proper" one, would be nice to do it with someone who knows the stuff near by. in aucks i should say.
but i agree, really great bike. i love mine.

Dont bother with the clutch, i never did.
20-25m was the best i could get out of the NXR.
Using a hill and going uphill is a good idea

Use clutch. Stand staggered (R/F on riders peg, covering brake, L/F on rear peg) The only way to learn. It'll feel fucked up for a while, But when ya get it nailed, it'll make it way easier
Oh, and you will crash........ Itsd the only way ya learn!!

Atleast someone told him how to practice properly, ( kruzah ). Lol at people saying do stand ups using both pillion pegs without a handbrake, itl only end in tears... and a munted bike.
Peeps stunt out drz 125's, nxr might be higher geared for the road but if you practice enough you will get it.
Well thats what ive found atleast.

with stock gearing use first.
they are pretty tall in first.
Staggared is ok, but when your learning, it will feel fucked up, and be hard to pull up straight.
just dont go too high till you get a feel for it (some people have it, others dont)

I never looped my NXR and did hundreds of wheelies like that, and if you cant wheelie without a handbrake well......
NXR's are tough, you can clutch em up in first, but they dont have the grunt to keep it up there when learning.
if you REALLY try, you can get it up without using the pillion pegs or the clutch, but it requires a massive heave!

All i did was mention the fact that doing standups on both pillion pegs without a handbrake is stupid. And a bad habbit to learn, just like power wheelies and feet dragging... something you would know alot about carver...
Try doing stand ups on a biggger bike using both pillion pegs without a HB and see what happens, e.g 954, r1 etc.... can you say loop :) haha
Dont turn this into a little bitch fight thread like you always do with everything carver, the dude just wanted advice and you were telling him some weird shit.

i have yet to see you wheelie...
on a GSXR1000/R1 etc, you have the power to keep it up with ease, so using the normal pegs is fine.
But on a heavy gutless NXR, you need to get as much weight as you can as far back as you can...this is about the NXR125, a bike i have owned for several years.

Unlike you carver i dont need to prove myself by showing off in front of people.
Ive seen that drz vid a shit load of times, their mad easy to wheelie on( stoppies too), i test rode the black sm from boyds so i know what they go like.
Straight wheelies and stoppies are easy on any sort of dirtbike only gets hard when you try combos and circles etc, never saw you do that on your gsxr1000 or 600...
I can wheelie my dr200 from 1st through to 4th.. although shes a bit worse for wear at the moment so havnt ridden it in a long time.
Could wheelie my old rgv150 in the first 3 gears... anyone who raced at meremere at the time i had that would have seen.
Am going hard on the 50 these days and just trying to learn more each time i ride.
Im not the one telling people not to cover the rear...
What happened to the whole my 03 gsxr600 is faster than your 07 kawii zx btw??? yeah thats right.... but drag racing takes no skill so thats why you would beat me aye and all the other bikers at the drags. Your a joke carver, pretty sure 99% of kb thinks so too..
Im not the one rocking the dole bro and soon to have no licence, yet i talk shit and im the idiot... oh....

as for proving myself, You seem desperate to prove yourself, begging me to drag you, what happened to the DR650 VS FZR250?
as soon as i put you to the test your "busy"

Yea i bought up the idea of fzr vs dr650 drag but at the time i did mention i had stuff on and was busy, some of us actually work and have various commitments. I said bring it to the drags, which you didnt, you bought the scooter.
I have a keen interest in stunting and drag racing so thats why i said.
I dont think im mad fast and never have said that i am. Ive never really pushed the 600 on the road, no need to.
Also i try not to race people through twisties on the road, ( i like living ) way to easy to get caught out by loose metal/ cars etc etc. Thats what a race tracks for go do a track day if you like that buzz.

Anyway back to the thread...
Be very careful where you practice as a road is any land where 'A place to which the public have access, whether as of right or not'. This means anywhere where the public use. You are probably OK on a disused airstrip or farmland, but car parks are definitely places considered to be roads as the public use them. This also includes beaches where people are frequent visitors but not beaches where people don't go. I think the law is probably designed to prosecute people who piss off other people but if you're not you're OK.

Oh i know why, carver wanted the publicity, thats all it is a publicity stunt.
If you watch the stuff in the states guys do on the road they dont identify themselves( and hence cant be charged or caught by police etc), they do it because they have a passion for it.Not to gain a name.

clutch would be useless because there is no grunt to keep it up after.
staggered footwork would furk up the balance hard. im not keen on trying it so ill just go with the back pegs and keep under balance point.

Dude... staggered isn't as scary as you'd think. One foots forward of the balance point, one is rear of it so its surprisingly stable feeling. The hard part is getting your head round the fact that
A. your rear foot isnt about to shoot the bike under and out from under your ass, and
B. its not going to cause you to pull up into an unblalanced wobbly or crossed up wheel stand.
I dont know how this effects the NXR and maybe the pegs are in different places to the balance point but on my 675 it turned out to be bloody easy and stable. I've been doing standups on the front pegs and avoiding the rear from simple fear. But I'm trying to clean a seriously long bridge out of Foxton and my technique isn't cutting it. Watched a youtube vid of a 675 doing a freeway including the curves for miles and another of a chick pulling up a standup staggered style with no effort and convinced myself to try one this morning on the way to work.
Got about 800m out if it before the road ran out! Felt super smooth, didnt speed up over 70kph and left a massive grin on my face half the day.
I'm just heading home now from work so I'll try it again and let you know, and i'll post up the youtube links when I get home.
And an Mp3 player with something angry blasting helps... Sick Puppies "One Of Us Is Going Down" and Atreyu's "Becoming The Bull" work for me to get your wannabe stunt face on.

but i guess now im gonna go with carver's advice, since he knows the bike inside out. and from my knowledge from the experience on this bike id have it agree with him.
clutch would be useless because there is no grunt to keep it up after.
staggered footwork would furk up the balance hard. im not keen on trying it so ill just go with the back pegs and keep under balance point.
didnt wana spark a debate, but no worries. Thanks anyways, ill let you guys know how it goes.
its a shame the stunters arent in auckland.

haha, good shit man!
I found the NXR needs such a big pull to get its gutless self up, that it tends to de stabiise it.
I love staggered on my DRZ SM however
haha yeah ive tryed riding staggered, and it does tend to add to the wobbly side of things. so its not the mostforgiving way for this bike.
im needing more work on my pulling techniques, and the main thing which follows is how much gas to keep it up and not overboard. which is why i dont keep on the gas when i clutch wheelie from standing.
poor bike, it tries so hard but i keep off the throttle which makes it sneeze and front falls down again hahaha.
a bit more practice and ive got it ;). well.....its overcomming the "balls" side of things really. and im managing. once ive done it a few more times ill get smoother and smoother hopefully

thats the way man, you'll get a feel for it, if ya dont, you'll end up like this stunter!

the key on the NXR is weight back as far as your comfortable.
Oh, and dont tire yourself out and keep going, rest, cause thats when you make fuckups.
I used to practice most nights for bout 1 hour after work.
i wish i could do the same on the TxT300

I dented both my rims in many places doing that kinda stuff!
The jump ok, the MFSC had a timed race round the hamilton BMX track on my one,
they lack grunt for the real shitty stuff

Obviously, public roads are out of the question:innocent: Are there any designated "wheelie" practice locations around?
The MotoTT track days were good for that sort of carry on until some "riders" flipped their bikes and Kiwifruit went all Green party on us and got them banned... probably one of the reasons i dont go to as many track days anymore... (Yes Alan it's your fault) :p

it is good fun, i tried to kill my one, used to do a bit of gravel on it too, the cheap suspension let it down though

Survived the Crazy Will Drift Teams training day at the Slipway in Karori, two rolled cars, a session or two on the track with the bike and pulling my riding pants back on at the end of the track day to find tyre belt wire inside (nearly impaled myself!!) to end up pulling monster staggered Standups through the tunnels and up the Ngauranga gorge for the cameras on the way home... that was different!
Favorite was The Weight station at Plimmerton, not the road, but the weigh station itself... Time to move to OZ! 14 days to go!
