Yank: 41t rear, castle nut + split pin on rear axle, big taillight, bigger exhaust outlet with 2 bolts to remove carbon buildup, smog crap if Californication, right hand drive.
Unzud: 42t rear, smaller taillight, smaller hole in exhaust with no bolts, left hand drive.

Rear carrier - Neither.

Slight differences with the needle and needle jet.

And a few diferrences across the years.

Only the base gasket changing to metal mid-03, the starter torque limiter disappearing in '98 and reappearing in mid-99 and the headlight plastics changing shape in '02.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there was a bore stroke change a few years back.

Edit - yeah 96 went from bsd 95 90.4 640 to 100 82 644

Edit 2: check this one out - this guy refers to a whole bunch of changes that year. http://www.cognitivevent.com/dr650set.html

Pre '96 was a whole different bike apart from the tyre sizes.
Actually 2.5 different bikes 650R and 650RS (and then RSE).

21L tanks, bash pates, rev counters...
What were they thinking?

The "modern" DR650 hasn't really changed since '96.
