View Full Version : A "loved" ZZR and some advice needed

Up until this morning, I was a wannabe biker. I was fully equipped with all the equipment. I was sorely tempted to post a pic of me in full gear on my driveway in a riding stance. Thankfully I didn't have to subject the lot of you to that...

My bike is John's old ZZR, and has been loved (like only John knows how - No offence :D ). Pics below, as you always want them.

Now the questions:
Which would be the best material to buy the fairings in? At the moment, I only want the front one, as I need it to mount the headlight. I don't want to spend heaps, since as everybody says I will crash :wait:

Looks are not even close to important, since you'll notice from the pics that the two side fairings aren't the same anyway.

Which would be the best dismantlers to go to? I will need two front indicator units and a front fairing. Or, does anybody have parts they don't want?? I doubt the design has changed over the years, but the bike is a 1990.

I will make it look really neat later, when I have less road-attracting skills. Also, it stops the bike from attracting the attention of "those" people for the moment. I'm just looking to get it onto the road safely.

A brief checkover (more full one tomorrow) has revealed other minor damage (tip of clutch lever missing, bent gear shifter, slightly bent main stand) but not actually required to ride. The re-bent gear shifter actually helps my large feet :niceone:

I can't wait...

Well remeber I wrote it off because I couldnt be stuffed fixing it - ask anyone it was an imaculate bike before the stupid gravel :(, www.justfairings.co.nz can do a full set for the bikes front end - But I was thinking it would make a nice streetfighter...

Oh, and also - if you need help fixing it or anything - I will come down in the weekend happily.

I will take the stands off and straighten them, and replace the shifter, and the clutch leaver.

How much did you end up paying for it? I'll tell you something for free its engine is perfect, although ugly :)

Ooh, I might take you up on the offer, but I'll see how I go. In my view, the main stand can wait (although the bike leans slightly to the right), so can the clutch. How would you straighten them? tools? or new parts??

Just Fairings doesn't list the ZZR on their website. Do they still do them nonetheless??

I paid $1,470. One bid, at the end, no competition :niceone:

edit: what do you mean ugly??? *scared*

Yea, best beat would be remove the Center Stand - the main stand can be straightened the way it was bent FORCE... Or I could take it for a gravel excursion on the other side to match it up for ya

Here is the email I got back yonks ago:

Yes we do do a ZZr 250 , but there is 2 models , we only do 1 ,the one with
1 piece sides not 2piece sides, you can contact me on 07 8490 950 or 021
0357 269 to discuss this I will be , around this week ,
Thanks Glenn

That was a long time ago, but numbers wouldnt have changed... then you can have new fairings for a decent price, although they wont be perfect like OEM, bloody close (Y)! and you will have the nicest looking ZEDZED around

Also is the handlebar bent, that might need to be wacked back to a sort of straightness, and also where did that dent on the tank come from :|?

Gremlin

I didn't notice the handlebar bend, how is it bent? Have to take a look tomorrow.

Ding in tank? err... I hit it. nah, wouldn't have a clue how it "got there". Although the guy that sold it delivered it in the back of his patrol, on its side...

so, even though he had taped the tank up, I spent a good half hour with meths cleaning the mixture of tape glue and fuel off the side of the tank, and then just for good measure, gave it a bit of a clean. As you do.

edit: Thanks for shoeing it with some very good condition Dunlop Arrowmax GT501s :D

YOUR KIDDING?

Did he come from whangarei with the bike on its side !!

Thats bloody bullshit did you get his address I want to go kick his arse for being a twat! have you had it running yet? that trip on its side could have caused more damage than its worth :(...

Gremlin
7th May 2005, 18:55
nope *trembling* He did start it up and rev it a bit when we lifted it out the back.

Will run it again more tomorrow. What sort of damage could have been done??

No address for him as he delivered it to me. I could send him an email:
Me: Hi, I need you address
Him: Why
Me: I know the previous owner, he doesn't like the way you treated the bike during transport
Him: So?
Me: He wants to kick your arse, and he probably lives near you.
Him: [no reply]

His name is David Smith, so he might even be in your Phone Directory...

Hes the local insurance twat assessor guy  - make sure you check it runs fine tommorrow - if it doesnt want to turn then you have a problem - I hope it will be ok, make sure that the battery is still topped up to! some acidy water would have leaked out...

Yea I will have a talk to some of the bike shops and tell them whats happened, I'm sure they will be equally unimpressed - as I am....

Keep me posted, and give just fairings a toot so you can get a new fairing up front if you need it!

Gremlin

My dad did check the battery (David even said we should - see he may not be tooo bad  ) and said that its fine. No evidence of leaking.

All *should* (hopefully) go well tomorrow...

I guess you haven't got the rest of the front fairing? Not attached to the headlight still maybe? The cheapest way would be to get a soldering iron and some spare fairing plastic (ABS I think) and plastic weld the old front fairing back together.

hey dude, grats on the new bike

heres my advice as a fellow learner, dont fix up the fairings for another 2 months, chances are your just gonna come off again and have to fix it twice, or three times+

i came off my SR250 last night and its fine, not even a scratch, Ricksta came off his cbr today and one side is fairly scratched, dont see much point in paying $X for brand new fairings just to re-scratch them.. use it as a learner bike, do your stupid falls on it, then jazz it up and make it look mean

just my 2c :D enjoy!

yep, I don't have the rest of the front fairing, and I need to attach the light to the inside of the fairing, so I need the mounting points.

I won't be fixing the sides, as quite simply, I don't need to. The front mudguard is damaged on the front tip, but I'll either carefully cut off the end, or sand off the muck (melted tip of mudguard) and put it back on.

Then front fairing (doesn't have to be new, just the basic requirements like mounting points and the cheapest option) and new/secondhand front indicators.

Cheap basics...

listen to john.... STREETFIGHTER!!! thats what im doing with my ZXR, my third bike now but its easier and cheaper to fix should you bin. Also did anyone mention that streetfighters are the shiz!!! :devil2: :Punk:

Gremlin

she is just about a streetfighter.. will take some pics when I have time. All the front fairings are now off, including the mudguard (well, it was never on).

First, oil, battery and lights. Oil is fine, right between the two levels on the side. One of the cells in the battery needed topping up, so that was done. Lights, all working except the main headlight, so new bulb for that will be needed. Is it correct for the rear brake not to light up the back brake light?? I know the bulb is working, because it lights up when the front brake is pulled.

Starting it up, absolutely fine. Choke, Turn key, push button (blah blah, yes not a push start, and I love it) and she started right up. Dad said compression seems to be about right (with a rough check), and the dash lights all work...

Should see if it moves fine. Into first gear. Try to pull away, revs die, bike stalls. Huh? Try again and again. Same result. Well, something wrong in gearbox, also can't get second either.

Start to take it apart. Everything comes off. Found that I need a lot of screws for the fairings when they go back on.

Once everything is off, dad notices a cable and suspects he can make the bike move. Answer: We completely failed to comprehend that with the side stand down, it won't pull away. Before dad's time, and I don't know enough. Now bike moves, but still no second gear.

John: I think you hinted something about this at some point. Do you know what might be the problem??

So, all I need is a right indicator (left should be OK) and the front fairing (need headlight mounts) and a working gearbox it would seem...

Next weekend will probably be a trip to Mt Eden Motorcycles for a service. Although I can't get a bike off them, they can definitely have my servicing. If they want a bike like mine in their workshop :killingme

Havn't read the whole thread so this may have been suggested. Just do a streetfighter version and save money from the fairings. Also check trade me and Ebay for headlight. Found one for my virago on ebay today for about $30NZD including shipping when it would cost close to 4 or 5 hundred from the shop. Same thing with the indicators but you can get some generic ugly ones from some parts shops for like 15 bucks or summat. Anyway good luck with it.

What seems to be the problem when It hits second?

I saw the guy who sold it crusing around town on it, make sure you really kick it into gear when you try (dont be scared to hurt it!)...

If not then let your dad? take it for a boot around the block and try muscle it into second :niceone:

When I rode it home I had alittle bit of trouble doing this, I suspect it may just be the gear leaver, As when I crashed I was in 3rd? or 4th? I cant remeber but I didnt think and tried to take off in 3rd and it got all upset with me, but then I clicked it down the gears and it was fine, I'm sure I ran the bike the entire way in second on the way home so it should be fine, when are you taking it to the mechanics? I am hoping my bike will be ready soon - then I could come sort out your problems  or maybe someone else here maybe able to provide some assistance, IF there is a gearbox problem then get in contact with the seller, and if you cant tell me - I will go get him myself and make him do something about it!

Replacing gearboxes, is something that your dont want to do nor try do its not fun and its not cheap! all the cogs and crazyness

What would they look like? Would they look like my attached pic? and which shops?? I don't need a headlight, just the bulb, as it doesn't have park or low beam... It does have a very nice high beam (which my dad found out the hard way when I flicked it on  )

What seems to be the problem when It hits second?
It doesn't get that far. It's like kicking a brick wall... (except up) I might try emailing the seller and see what he thinks. Personally, my dad and I suspect we are simply missing something stupid.

I'm sure I ran the bike the entire way in second on the way home so it should be fine, when are you taking it to the mechanics?
Dad's busy all week (loading it into the back of a previa - but upright), so at the very earliest the weekend. If you would love to have a look for yourself, I don't mind holding off on the mechanics (duh! who wants to spend money) and using them as a last resort. The gear lever is bent, but it looks like a double bend (was bent in, so got bent out, now wavy)

If it did get to worst case scenario, then the mechanics could fix/replace gearbox. As a newbie, there is no way on earth I'll attempt that.

JSG has also offered to bring his ZZR round so I can compare and find differences. "Ooh, look mine has more damage here". but I'm not sure when/if he is free...
