Ye Gods... That takes me back a few years. I had one of the black pipers - same model and colour.
You need the US model tubular swingarm to complete the look.
Will we see it at Taumaranui?

Yeah, thats interesting about the swingarm,I dont recall the different swingarm, but Sidecar Bob in another thread has mentioned it,but I will check when I get to work,I work at wellington Motorcycles,so will check with Steve Dundon

Odd indeed. My one had the tube swingarm and was less than a year old when I got it. All the reports I heard was that the swingarm was off the US GSX1100E budget model and fitted because it twisted less than the ali box section. I saw one other X model and it had the tube arm also.
Remember, they did two models - T and X

I had a 81 GSX1100E for a coupla years in the early 80s--loved that bike.Always had a wobble over 140 kmh odd one up though. Cured that by putting someone on the back and scaring them stupid.Mine was previously raced at the Hawkesbury road races in Marlborough.....didnt hurt it none. Moved on to even older bikes--1980 XS1100. Now I can get a wobble up at any speed haha

I just stumbled on this thread too lol Im must be stalking gazza.
Didnt Rob have a few Demo laps of Llyall Bay on the PF bike in 83 / 84 and only raced it the next year after Hissy ?? .
I have pis in my album of 1984/85 Brut 33 / Countrywide at Gracefield and the Morowaki bikes with the flash transporter were there then on the CBX750 based bikes. They were overheating so had to run Gracefield with lower fairing removed to stop overheating. It was Yatsushira using Y and letter H whose name i forget. There was also # 7 , a red bike that may have been Norris Farrow he was quite fast too. beating Freeth in one race but Rob got all of them i think.
Rob H on the Pro sponsored Yellow / white bike was wearing #1 , Freeth # 2 on the CRC Mckintosh and Paul Iddon was on the Rg500 with letter I . Rob also rode the Rg250 with #1 on it , GSX550 and may have been another but i dont remember.
Jim Ashcroft debuted his rear engined Kwaka sidecar Z1000j powered , and there was the (i think ) German on a Rg500 wearing letter K and he did crap with the kerbs intimidating him lots.
I had my Gracefield debut in what i thought was 83 and i didnt race in 84 so i am guessing thats why i got so many pics of the meeting.
Maybe my dates are all wrong.
I loved Gracefield track and the CB 455 went well there thats for sure.

Go back to my post #36 on this thread and I gave you the link where I had put the '83 Gracefield photos up - Hiscock was on the PF and racing hard against Phillis on the Kat and Robert was on the ali bike number 4.
Then if you go to this thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/1464-R.I.P.? that is the '84 Lyall Bay meeting when Robert demoed the PF. After that he rode it in anger winning a lot on it so you will be right about the 84/85 Gracefield with him on it. I can't have been in Wellington the right time that summer because I don't have any pics of that year so can't help you any further on that.

Your correct Barry , i think i am getting a bit old so have decided to stop counting now as we dont have enough fingers and toes in the house to tally it up.
I will try to attain a level of techanogical expertese and scan and post the pics i have of the meeting. i am interested to know who the # 7 was as in one pic he is leading both Rob and Dr Freeth.
Gracefield has always been a fav of mine as it was my first ever race meet and it was down to Rob getting me started. I passed him one day on the Rimutaka GP on the outside and he asked me how long i had been racing , my answer was of course i just got the bike 2 months ago and it was alot faster than my AG 100 was so i enjoyed the speed. He and Jo-anne cracked up and couldnt believe what i just said lol.
He gave me the forms to join VUMCC and and all the forms fo the ACU licence. The rest as they say is history.
Rob always used to call and say hi when i was working at Schrodoco in Welly and i naturally always gave him a very good price on anything he needed for the bikes or whatever. He and Dick Huurdamen(sp) were always playing with something that needed bits and bobs. I have always tried to base my racing on the words of wisdom he gave me in the beginning and the photo i have of him from the funeral will always be front page in the historical racing album. I used to contact him at times when he was being assisted by Grant Vinten as i lived just around the corner and i was working at Sawyers then too .
RIP mate , and thanks. I hope i did you proud, i certainly tried my best which is what you told me to do.

Todd Moffat. Without a doubt.
Although personally I'll be using a painter in Auckland for my bike when it's time, Todds is some of the best work I've seen.

Hang on a cotton-picking minute... I am getting a hazy memory of asking you to store my bike for a while.... It's all coming back to me now.... :innocent:

That does bring back (good) memories.
Mine had the factory cantilever frame, fully flexible in the middle. It was a pig, but a pig with character.

Yes it did give me a grin, I am so impressed at how the motor goes now with cams, pistons etc in it,as I have said before the handling needs some work, but hey it is 30 years old
Hindsight I probably should have taken the ZXR up intstead of the MV,but I wasnt going to turn down the opertunity

I really like this bike but not sure about it's heritage as I thought the black piper (WHOLE EXHAUST WAS BLACK) was a NZ thing along with cams and carb's.
Cannot find any history or pic's of a black piper (middle 2 pipes only) racing in Australia.
Can anyone remember this version.

I think he's a bit confused.
It was the centre two headers that were silver chromed with the outer headers and mufflers in black chrome.

I'm also not aware of an Aussie black piper version.
Thanks
I think I read somewhere the black pipes where less restrictive and that was the reason for fitting them.I already have a made up wire wheel 81 model and a genuine factory wire wheel T model but in reality the mag wheel model here in OZ is just as "castrol 6 hour special" as the wire wheel as both were raced in that series.
I think this bike at 15k is over the top price wise but would guess a genuine black piper would be worth that now and would be to me as I love these old gsx's.

I have spotted that bike & he is very confused, as Katman says the inner pipes were the standard chrome, the outer pipes were changed to black as they had a 32mil outlet, standard chrome outlet 28mil, the Kiwi bikes, also had cams, smoothbore carbs & the petrol tanks had the fuel tap modified,to make way for the taller carbs

Gday folks. Love the old GSX1100's. I bought a 81 GSX1100E in Blenheim in 1983. Silver she was. Last known number plate was 1 MUT. ( I think it was 67 HRL when I bought it??? I worked For the Motor Rego at the time and the 1 MUT plate was handed in so I transferred it over.
Was owned and I think raced at Hawkesbury ( Marlborough ) I think by Bill MacDonald. Damn fine bike...except for the weave one-up over about 140ks .
Was even a program here back then about KIller Bad handling evil GSX's. I could never fix it; new swingarm bearings, different tyres, pressures, more beer, less beer , nothing worked. I found that a pillion made it go away. My passengers used to love going down the Riverlands Straight at 220 . '' But look it doesn't weave anymore !'' Sold the GSX to some bike shop in Wellington in 1985 to fianance my move to Australia. Well I'm still here.....wonder what became of the bike????? Cheers , Chrisso.

Hey Paul, you are showing your age,me old mate
I was there at Gracfeild when the Morowaki bikes were here,Warren has a photo of turn one from that era, with Rob Phillis,Norris Farrow,Dave Hiscok,Stu Avant etc,all pealing off through turn one
i'd bet money that hiscock had retired by then, either or, that's the year Robert Holden rode and owned the Plastic Fnatastic so what bike would he have even had available?
