I've finally posted this ride on the Calender. The link is http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1864.

Date = March 7th and 8th

Start = Woodville (hit the road at 9am). Can pick up some riders from Ashhurst.

Saturday = Ride over the Saddle Road to Ashhurst. Ride north up Pohangina Valley, with a side trip up Takapari road (this will require good knobbly tyres if wet). Fuel at Apiti. Back roads through to Taihape for lunch. Ride over the Taihape/Napier road to Napier (about 140km without fuel).

Stay = Westshore Holiday Park or Westshore Inn (Napier).:drinknsin Restaurant available.
http://www.westshoreholidaypark.co.nz/index.html
http://www.westshoreinn.co.nz/

Sunday = Ride south to Woodville keeping close to the hills. Ride up Whariti for lookout finish.

Distance = 530km total

If we get good weather, there will be spectacular views. Bring a camera.

This will be a leisurely ride with many stops. 60% winding seal, 35% gravel, 5% difficult track.

Plenty of options for the not so adventurous.:second:

I'm a definate maybe also.

A 9am start from Woodville will require either a far too early start for the Welly crew or a trip up the night before.

I think you've broken the calender booking thingy as well, following the link to the calender automatically signs you up.

Missus rung up the Kennedy park place today to ask about accomodation. Due to a conference on that weekend, they only have a couple of 6 bed cabins left. Reluctant to book just yet. Looking at other options also.

And yeah, that bike is far too shiny.

Be good to catch up with you and that old beemer. I was quite taken by the old beast.:headbang:

We can reluctantly start a little later if there is enough interest from the Welly crew. Or perhaps meet at Ashhurst at 10am if easier. It'll take an hour to get over the Saddle by the time we get a photo of a few windmills.

As for the calender, how do you fix that? Took me a couple of goes to get the bloody thing working anyway.

Hello Mark & Bart how are you going? I went up there Sunday afternoon on the whale. Weather was also in doubt (given it had been raining all morning) all the way up but when I got to the top I could see the East Coast was having a lovely day the Central Plateau was covered in black clouds and the rain was heading up from Wellington I managed to miss it all until I got back down to the bottom where it started to rain. Not sure what the falling off was all about I was quite concerned that the whole way up to the gate 1 km short of the hut is now a bloody main road that you could probably drive your car up in the dry. Didnt go past the gate as the whale + being by yourself is not a good combination to be getting stuck. Great views good ride
Catch up on the Southern Coaster

I don't think getting there at that time is out of the question, we would just have to be on the road before some of us normally even wake up. And I wouldn't expect to get anything intelligent out of Jim if he's along.

Found accommodation that may suit better.

Westshore Holiday Park (Napier)

http://www.westshoreholidaypark.co.nz/index.html

Other (slightly more expensive) accommodation available across the road at the Westshore Inn, with food and other necessities available :drinknsin

They have a good restaurant and also do breakfast.

I'll add this to the calendar.

I had a bit of a look around today. I see what you mean about that gate. I got a little way past the hut, but the track became a bit 'single rider' unfriendly. Awesome spot.

Hi Bart & Co.

I'm dropping the missis in Waikanae on Friday so will be keen to do this ride, BUT.........

If it's dry could it be done on a 200+ kg Tiger with intermediate tyres on? It's just that me & missus are then going to tour the East Coast and sticking to tar so don't wanna waste a set of $550 TKC's on what will be mostly a tar trip.

Unless, I con her into and adventure week............:devil2:

Now why didn't I think of that before........

Still, question stands, for now.......

You'll be fine on intermediate tyres. The majority of the roads are fairly fast gravel or windy seal. :niceone:

The only exception is Takapari Road. This is quite rocky in places, but I doubt you will have a problem if dry. It's certainly worth it once you get to the top. If wet, this road may require good tyres. There are a couple of steep sections in the middle, but the road opens up quite nicely towards the top.

Beyond the A-Frame hut the track gets a bit rough, but I doubt we'll venture that far. Not supposed to anyway, as the road is closed. :msn-wink:

Be nice to catch up.

OK, time to resurrect this thread. Now that South Coast thing is over, and it sounds like my broken bike isn't terminal, I'd better do some organising.

I've been thinking.............the Sunday ride is only really going to be about 3 hours worth, so for the more adventurous we could tack on a little loop out around the Makairo. Would add about 80km, and would probably be quickest going east to west (the slightly harder way). There are a few other nice roads out that way for the less adventurous.

North Range Road could also be tacked on the end. I'm open to suggestions.

Apparently the calendar is signing people up automatically. Can someone please confirm if this is true. If so, does anyone know how to fix it?

Cheers :scooter:

bart we will have to look in to the southern end of the range road, see if it doable.
yip im keen on the tricky track again. may be all meet at tui central, give the tui girls a kiss and go around the tricky track then head for range road,
or would it be better to do range road first then the tricky track could go in and back out again, if time allows, finish up the trip at the cafe.

Cheers Joe, but I think we'll have far enough to go on the Saturday. I was thinking of tacking it on the end of Sunday, as Sunday may be a bit empty.

Sunday = Napier to Dannevirke (scenic route) to Makairo then Mangatainoka. Either Pahiatua, North Range Road, Woodville, Whariti finish.
Or, Woodville, Whariti finish, and quick rip through North Range Road for those heading south. We can make it up as we go along on the day. If we do N Range Road first on the Saturday, we may end up a bit rushed. :chase:

Most of the ride will be reasonably fast gravel. If your old beasty can comfortably handle gravel roads, you'll be fine.

Takapari Road is the exception. This is a bit more steep and rocky (no ruts as such), but it's the kind of road that gets gradually worse as you go, so gives plenty of opportunity to turn back. This road is a dead end, so we will be in and back.

Hope you can make it Neale.

Any suggestions?

The original idea was to get away as early as possible, so the day wouldn't be rushed. What works for you guys?

The trick, gentlemen, is to get up earlier...!!:2thumbsup

Wot Joe said Cary - I'm planning on using my GS for this ride - be good to see you again - cheers Aslan aka Stephen O :soon:Great, maybe someone in the know can sort a place to meet.

I hope to get to this ride to, is accomodation going to be a problem if I decide in a week or so?

MikeI have booked a cabin with 2 beds so unless someone else gets in first it's yours if you join the ride.

Thanks Cary, I will sort it out soon and let you know, if someone else grabs it first though that is my bad luck

My new Partner moved in last week, at the moment her wall of boxes is between my bike and the garage door so have got to get that sorted before I go anywhere!

Joe thanks for the PM

I will be coming down from New Plymouth. What is quickest way to get to gorge, should I be going through Palmy or turn off before then?

I am trying to work out if I can get there on the Saturday morning (without getting up too early) without having to go part way on Friday after work.

Cary I have sent you a PM, I will have the bed in your cabin please.

Take the first road to the left after Turakina .This takes you to the Main road SH 1.Take a right then a left towards Halcomb & Fielding then Bunnythorpe then Ashurst. You save a bit of time this way and there is not as much traffic.

Hi guys, keen to make this trip with you. Got to get into this adventure riding given I've now got a more d/s capable bike. I've registered via the calender. Given a couple of you are coming from Wgtn / Lwr Hutt area, how's about we ride together. Where to meet?. I assume riding up through the Wairarapa (collect 1 at Masterton). :chase: So meet at Upper Hutt Caltex? Time?

I've booked accomodation now (2 bunk cabin with Andy Mac -$40 or $20 ea).

Cheers, Steve

Good to see you can make it Mark.

9.45 - 10.00 should be fine at Ashhurst. I'll be gassing up there as you should never miss an oportunity when you've only got about 180km to play with.

Gas available at Apiti until 12.30. A lot depends on the amount of time we spend up Takapari. If it's a nice day we might be up there a while. I can ring ahead and get them to stay open a bit later. :mobile:

Make sure you put an inline filter in the fuel lines - you know that there will be a little bit of swarf in there that clogs a jet just after you've topped off the tank.

Reminds me... I need to do the same.

The tube was H/D. The spare one is also H/D. But it was a really big nail, straight in. The spare tube has a nick in it (but not a hole) from travelling with me too often, so I'll pass on that too, and buy some new ones tomorrow.

I kind of like the jet fighter idea. You can hang a hose out the back, and I'll fill up on the move. :niceone:

Have you thought about putting on stronger front shocks to handle all that extra weight up front.

if you got off your bum a bit earlier you could meet Cary and I at the Horsemans Cafe in Shannon for breakfast/coffee at 8.30/8.40

No probs.

In Napier, the Thirsty Whale and the Gintrap are both open at 9am on Sunday for breaky and a fancy coffee.

It will only be around 4 hours riding back to Dannevirke/Woodville on the Sunday. I suggest, if we get back reasonably early, we could add a loop out around Pongaroa. If enough are interested, we could go through the Makairo. If not, we could go out from Dannevirke, over Coonoor, Waione, Akitio, Marainanga, Spur, Waihoki, to Tiruamea.......then go our seperate ways. :headbang:

Or............we could just make it up as we go along.

early breakfast at the keyboard and heading out in about 30 mins - mildly apprhensive abt how slippery Takapari Rd will be after the overnight rain - cest la vie :niceone:

Well Aslans apprhension wasn't warranted and everyone who went up Takapari Rd came down again feeling there way through the clouds and off across Makoura Rd to Apiti. A good bit of road to blow out the cobwebs. After a regroup we then headed North. The small bikes where now a bit worried about petrol and when we hit the gravel north of Apiti the clouds came back and we where down to 20 - 30 Khr with visibility of about 50 - 75 metres. For some reason the Adventurers!!! ( MarkS) decided to bail and head for Highway 1 to Taihape. A lunch break in Taihape sore every one fed and watered and as this was a day trip for me I was now heading south and the rest heading east to Napier. How is the sunny Hawks Bay guys. As we had missed alot of gravel on the way up I decide to head back via Apiti and by now there wasn't a cloud on the road and I was in Apiti before I new it. Instaed of going back down Pohangina West road I turned down Ridge Rd and had a great ride of 40Kms of gravel before before emerging just north of Ashhurst and from there home again all in a round trip of 340Kms.
I look forward to hearing about how day 2 went. Thanks Bart for getting this ride off the ground.

Did manage to drop the Tiger on the weekend and even though it was on the 42nd Traverse...........Well at the start of it just for photo op!

Paula had to do a sock change as her boots were not (as it turns out) waterproof. she was on the bike and it rolled forward off the side stand and she did a hollywood fall to avoid more serious injury than a bang on her (helmeted) head.

The pannier took most of the damage along with the engine crash bars & little on the upper faring, Oh well.

This was my first multi day adventure ride, and I absolutely loved it. :wari:
It was all new roads & sights for me, the highlights being -
Going up Takapari Rd into the clouds up top & even thicker cloud coming down.
Thru the farm on the Taihape - Napier Rd.
The Pori Rd heading to Alfredtown.
And the twisty tarseal from Alfredtown to Masterton.
Thanks for the great experience & am enjoying all the photos. Marks's ride report on Advrider is excellent.

Roll on the King Country ride

these rides become like crack - can't wait for the next fix :Punk:

there is certainly a sort of high that you get from thrashing the snot out of a bike down isolated dirt roads......

The KLR is great (the D606's stick like shit to a blanket) - like low strength beer - you can over indulge without puking. For me my dream 950 SE would be like changing over to rum and cokes - I'd be on the ground before I knew what hit me

self control - wotsat?

Thanks all for a great ride and company. Top bloke award to Tony for the Tui's ......

He is certainly raising the bar a little higher ( pun intended ) , going to make it harder for the rest of us to meet those standards :oi-grr:

yes but not some faggy Adventure version :scooter:
gotta be an 690E or prefferably 950SE

Wont happen though - I have enough trouble controlling a rip snorting 30-35 horsepower.

Wat he said. Had a really good weekend thanks guys. Good to ride with you all. Had ridden some of these roads, but a good chunk were new. Highlights for me were Takapari Rd, the station road linking to the Gentle Annie (the rain kept the dust down & interest in traction high), Pori Rd on the way back, & a final blast down Highway 52 to Masterton.

95% of my pictures were repeats of what have already been posted..(& truthfully, I've yet to master reducing file sizes to meet image criteria).

I'll see many of you at the King Country ride.

Wotcha reackon. I was gonna put 'Revenge' in there somewhere, but thought that would be a bit much.

How about starting at Woodville, taking the scenic route to Napier, over to Taihape (Gentle Annie, with a couple of side trips into the Kawekas, and perhaps the hot springs). Stay in Taihape. Head south on Sunday via Apiti, Takapari, and all those good roads around there.

Anyone interested?????????????????????????????????

It's about 530km right around. I'd say 300ish on the Saturday and 200ish Sunday. This is without side trips. There's plenty of oportunity to add more if time allows. I try not to cram in too much, otherwise it just turns into a big rush, without time to see the scenery.

I'll start working on some dates. Late Feb or early March would probably work.

Like the sound of that. would still like to go up the other two roads back from the hot springs. How did you go for fuel when we went across Bart, did you have much left by the time you got to Napier?

Not to close to the Capital coast adv ride please.

Hey Mark the hot springs are on the Napier side, I think there is a fishing lodge somewhere close, but probably quite expensive, and it's about 80km back to Napier.

I've got a conference thing on the weekend of the CCA, so that's out anyway.

If tenting at the hot springs, we would probably be best to go the normal direction (via Taihape and over the Annie on Sat).

Good fuel range would be required.
