just recently picked up an 1987 cbr 1000 f. had been sitting around for a couple months. previous owner took it for a blast the day i picked it up 500km give or take a few. at idle it is running rough as guts and sounds like a damn tractor. under acceleration it labours and struggles until you really give the throttle a good tweak. first time i've had a honda so any advice would be appreciated. gotta start somewhere...

Could well be a diaphragm in one of the carbs is split... Or, the slide is stuck closed... Or the fuel turning to varnish, and blocking your idle jets.

OR, could be a dead plug or lead.
On the big engines, they will run on 3 fine.... sounding like a tractor, and give them some revs and they seem to smooth out.
750 triples still make quite a lot of power!

A trick is to feel each header after a minute or two to determine which cylinder is just there for looks....
Then work on that one.

Great thing about CBR's, you get to pull lots of bike apart before you get into the normally very reliable business end.

Before even thinking about panicing. Givethe carbs a really good huck out using compressed air and make sure all jets are clean. Then replace the plugs. Then fill the tank with 98 octane gas. If that doesn't fix matters then come back to us.
