View Full Version : Crashed my VFR

An error in judgment now sees my bike is a poor state.

I was at the Tremaine Ave end of Armstrong st waiting to turn right onto Tremaine. Checked left and right, lots of traffic.. Look across at the opposite road (Shelley st). There is no car. Waiting waiting waiting. There's a gap coming from left and right, didn't check Shelley st again. Dumb.

Turn right, "oh look there's a car". Bam.

The cars passenger side bumper hits me on the left. About where the crankcase is.

Totally my fault, no dispute there.

Only injury is minor, a little cut and some bruising on my knee. I was wearing my helmet, jacket and gloves with work overalls underneath, steel cap leather boots on feet.

The ladies car is not bad, bumper is on the piss and the light is crooked. There was no debris or obvious broken stuff from her car.

My vfr's fairing is a mess. The left side crank cover has a hole. The tank is a bit crooked from where the bike fell on my leg on the right. I haven't checked further.

I'm pretty gutted, I know better and shouldn't have been so complacent.

Give way 101. Fail.

Bunch of bull crap. We all learn from our experiences, postive or negative, and to be able to learn from the experiences of others is a major benefit of this site.

So, good on you for posting it up for other people to learn from.

Steve

Ok two for starters:

1) Checking the opposite junction just before starting off - even though he had checked this previously it is a good reminder not to just assume that it is clear because it was 10 seconds ago.

2) Only physical injury seems to be the knee. They only place where protective gear wasn't worn.

I've passed my full but in no way do I consider myself to be an experienced rider. That's why I always check this type of thread to see if there is anything new I can learn from.

And before you say these points are no brainers - I'm talking about the view point of new riders.
When people make a mistake and cock up and post on here with as much detail as they can plus an indication of what they think did wrong - then new riders can read them and learn from it - without having to ask questions and possibly look foolish.

Other experirenced riders correcting the OP on their assumptions of what went wrong also adds benefits. Taking the piss out of the OP does not add to the thread.

So what your saying is, you've got absolutely no skill at all.

Nah, don't be like that.

He's got the skill to fail a wheelie, silde his back wheel out, lock his front wheel (because letting go of the front brake is for wimps, y'know?), and watch himself cruise down the road like that into a roundabout, writing the poor bike off.

And THEN he's got the skill to come onto KB and tell everyone that he is the man for doing so.

And to top it off, after evidently being unable to ride two R6's, he goes and buys an R1, and immediately declares that he's done with corners, and only likes the straights now.

That sort of a person is truely one of a kind.

I'll disagree with you on that one. From a learner's point of view I find crash threads useful when the OP says what went wrong and why. It also keeps everyone else on their toes (well, those who can learn from others' mistakes) - I myself will remember about Gatch's crash when I am next at a four-way intersection.

On a positive note, at least another piece of shit VFR is off the road.

Them are fightin' words!!

What is ironic about this thread, is the OP has demonstrated humility and "opened up" about his mistake. You are representing the other end of the spectrum.

By the way, when you spell "illeterate" in your red rep, you should have a dictionary handy.

il⋅lit⋅er⋅ate
1. unable to read and write: an illiterate group.
2. having or demonstrating very little or no education.
3. showing lack of culture, esp. in language and literature.
4. displaying a marked lack of knowledge in a particular field: He is musically illiterate.

Synonyms:
See ignorant.

Cheers to Dan Plaisted at Motorrad, he's donated an engine cover to me.

Cleaned it up, pulled the old one off, scraped off the old gasket paper and sealant. Popped on new cover, checked oil level, cranked it over without the kill switch on to see if it would get oil pressure still. Oil light goes out.. Good. Fuel on, choke on. Couple of seconds cranking and ZANG !!! It fires up, let it warm up, check for leaks. All appears well. Engages gears, no clutch slippage, no rattles, grinding sounds.

Very happy :D

Coming off is never nice, nor cool, making it out of a crash situation alive, breathing and with minimal damage to you and your machine is always a good start, having the courage to post what has happened to you and why so others may hear what not to do, is something to be respected.
Been a while since we rode together but I recall you ride well and with confidence, stay alive mate, watch em all, remember they're all out to getcha!
I've also ridden with one or two of the people making the most noise in this thread, far be it for me to say anything about their riding abilities or otherwise, perhaps though the numberr of people now staying away from those same rides that we all used to go on, is testament in itself as to their riding abilities.
