View Full Version : Please slow down a bit guys!

I've had the misfortune of having to take four wheels to work of late and am missing the bike terribly in the Auckland commute! AS a biker, I am aware of upcoming bikes, always watching the mirrors and pulling aside to give splitters more room AS an aside, only one BMW rider so far has waved acknowledgment, thanks, mate!

Anyway, over the past week or so there have been a few guys splitting at high speed - by that I mean a big speed differential with the cars - racing through at a pace that would give them no chance of avoiding an accident if a car made a sudden lane change.

Particularly a white coloured cruiser that has been so quick I still cannot pick it's make though it could be an M50 or even VL250.

I wouldn't post normally about those who may split faster than me, heck I even got left behind by the Taka bike Cop! But you guys are just asking for trouble and contributing to the negative image of the biking community.

PLease, think about what you're doing!

I don't see it like that.

It should be common knowledge that lane splitting is dangerous at all times, especially while doing so at a high speed.

Perhaps Edbear is hoping that whoever it is he saw going so fast while splitting reads these forums and perhaps will think twice about going so fast.

Good point. I don't think we realise just how hard we are to see sometimes and when you're hoofing through traffic even if the cage drivers are looking in their mirrors, one second you're not there the next you are...... then you come on KB and bitch about how some arsehole in a car ploughed into you or cut you off.

Very well put. We must remember that the majority of us are cage drivers too and passing cars on a bike is just what we do, however, Edbear and Trudes make good statements.

Who ever you are, be careful as the motorway is not the best place to ride like maniacs............ and cars are just as likely to change lanes without knowing you are approaching either

Having recently binned my bike, I am currently using a car. On the motorway this morning I was being carefull to keep left so there was a gap for motorcycles lane splitting. I could see maybe two car lengths back (mostly thanks to other cage drivers either driving in the middle or right hand side of their lane). So I couldn't really see motorcycles until they were almost upon me.

Imagine what it is like for a cage going at 20km/h that suddenly gets passed by someone doing 70km/h when the first thing they know of the motorbike is the roar of its engine next to their window.

It just something you get used to.
I have driven a cage on the AKL motorway for the last 17 years and non of this is new. you get all types of riders but you just get used to it. car drivers are the same
Don't sweat about it, or it will just make you have a grumpy day.
Some people ride/drive with manners and some are complete f***wits.

Your obvisouly are not familiar with Auckland motorways every morning and every evening. Today I had the car in first for most of my journey, and even then I had to engage the clutch and use the brake to slow down several times.

Lets just say there is quite a bit of traffic congestion.

I had my first lane splitting experience yesterday, was fairly relaxing and cages seem to allow room for me without any issues.
The only problem was getting past buses, cos they take up a large amount of the lane, but I put it in first, waited for a gap and then nailed it.

Lane splitting scared the hell out of me until I got a job in Otahuhu, had to travel on the motorway everyday from Pukekohe.
After a few mornings when it took over an hour & a half to get to work, I had watched others lane spitting and decided I had had enough of sitting in traffic, sucking up the fumes.
I find if you travel at the same time everyday, drivers get used to you lane splitting
On the southern motorway cars to move over when they see you coming, but other riders at work said the northern motorway is hell for bikes.

Of course! I get to feeling all rejected when no-one waves at me. I did have one chap wave at me last night, but that was a different kind of wave as I upset him passing him... (He was in a car)

Northern isn't too bad as there are a lot of bikes splitting and the car drivers are fairly used to it. That white cruiser flashed by me again this morning and think it's a Virago. Most of the others were splitting well though. I feel that cruiser rider is only going to be a temporary distraction the rate he's going...

They weren't French, they were Normans. Saying that they were French is akin to saying that the American Indians lost the war in Vietnam...

But then there is the opposite too, those who are splitting very slowly, completely oblivious to anything else that may be coming up behind them. A few times this week I've come up to bikes that are also splitting, going a lot slower than I am. I'm grateful to those that notice and move over, but people, check your mirrors every now and then, and find a safe gap to move into if there is another bike behind you!

FFS don't be so pedantic! Yes, I know they were Normans...from Normandy....which is where? :)
If I'd have said Normans there would have been a bunch of posts wondering who the hell they were. Sometimes you just can't win on KB!

Besides, I'm pretty sure there would have been some American Indians serving in Vietnam, and American Indians are Americans so therefore....you can argue this type of crap all day if you really feel so inclined.

One thing I can not fucken stand is the monkeys who are not actually splitting but seem to purposefully block you from splitting. They sit in behind cages on the far right hand side of the lane, almost like they are going to split but don't.

If you're not going to split any time soon drive in the middle of the road you monkeys.

I have to say commuting on the Southern M/Way the cars are most accomodating when I'm filtering through. If I have time to wave and continue splitting I do, but sometimes your concentration is on forethought.
Most of my anger comes from other bikers :/

That biker on the cream coloured Virago flew past again this morning. Most bikers are splitting well apart from two I worry about. The Virago rider is an accident waiting to happen, but there's another on a small scooter who can only reach about 80km/h max, but barely slows when he starts splitting.

Why worry about any person but yourself ? Would seem it is their problem not yours if they crash...

Edbear

I do worry about other's, and if they crash into me, it's definitely my problem otherwise the problem of whoever they crash into. No accident ever only affects one person. Most times, I may think someone is going a bit quicker than I would be comfortable with, but these guys are really over the top with the speed differential between themselves and surrounding traffic. The Virago rider is the fastest splitter I've ever witnessed by a large margin, and I've seen some fairly quickish guys at times.

its just something you get used driving on the AKl motorway and i have done it for the last 18 years and it still astounds me how bad some are.
like cars there's good riders and bad but you have to look out for them all because you can't tell which is which. and we can all have a bad day.

funny this should come up, I'd been thinking about posting something similar after seeing a few people splitting horrendously fast/dangerously. I've seen a guy on a yellow cbr250 a couple of times now - I'll see him way in the distance one minute, then he's right up on my arse (following *really* close), and before I've even half moved out of the way he'll be overtaking me - then continues along through the traffic at a good 50-60km/h faster than the cars. Every day he goes past I half expect to see him 10 mins later on the road, in a world of hurt.

Yes Ed I know what your saying, towed a tralier ( behind bike) along at 2k's and hour heading to a rally, 'buggar' stuck in the traffick had the wife on the back, some splitting would go past at warp speed, and my reaction was FUCK ME for at any time we moved and they were in the wrong place at the wrong time at that speed....Well..
