Jetting needed?

Hey all, I did read a thread with a subject somewhat similar to the one of this, but can't seem to find it.

Basically, after buying a DNA airfilter and an Akrapovic exhaust, the bike's running (predictably) a bit differently. It's not running super smooth, which doesn't worry me greatly, and it's got a bit more up top. However, I heard that the crackling noise on deceleration is a sign of something potentially damaging to the engine. Is this so? It sounds cool as hell when going through a tunnel and rolling off, but if it's going to damage the engine, I'd rather spend the $ to get it jetted.

So, should I get it jetted? And what's the worst that could happen if I don't?

It's just running a bit lean, which shouldn't hurt it unless it's VERY lean.
You may not need to rejet - often just richening the idle and/or shimming the main needles is all that's required, and all I did on my VFR750 and VTR when I changed the zorsts and filters.

Cheers Vifferman. Excuse my ignorance, but how is richening the idle or shimming the needles differ? I understand that there's more air flowing through now, and the same amount of fuel, hence running lean...and I thought re-jetting just squirted more gas in. If you richen the idle, would it be as good as getting someone to re-jet it? Also, how is it done?

If your bike is injected you won't need to get it re-jetted, you'll need a power comander or similar i.e. change the mapping/fueling
If its carburetted you probably need it re-jetted. The crackling noise is probably nothing serious at this stage. Richening the idle is fine at low rev's cause most of the fuel is supplied by pilot jets BUT at higher revs most of the fuel is supplied by the main jets which is when you're developing more power and the idle has nothing to do with it. Hence, you need bigger mains.
If the bike is leaner the valves get hotter to so, you're running the risk of burning them. Get it checked, if its correctly fueled right across the rev range you make more power to :niceone:

dude Given that the 02 is injected the puter has a degree of self correction to deal with atmospheric changes. So It will compensate for your changes.
That said its pretty easy for a bike shop to remap the puter for ya.
If its a carbed bike then I'd save up a hundred bucks and get it dyno'd
2 dyno runs and a quick bit of jetting won't cost the earth but itll be really good for performance. i'tll be good for your bike too

A dyno base line run should only cost $80 odd, it's the adjusting and rejetting that bumps the price up/

In my past experience, the crackling noise when you button off is due to an exhaust leak
Check the exhaust gaskets, maybe fit new ones? & flange nuts tightness
More likely it is leaking where the new muffler bolts on, Id use a bit of 'maniseal' paste in there, hope this helps

Oh...ok, that sounds kinda bad, cheers, I'll check that out. Cheers. I had it stuffed on by Mt. Eden, who seem a pretty competent bunch in my books. But yeah, I'll check that one.

Oh, and the '02 6Rs aren't injected, I guess Kawi was a bit slow on that front for this model.

I think I'll def get it jetted anyway, if it's gonna be under $200, and it'll help to prevent any problems in the future, then it's worth it to me.

Lessen it's a K series BMW. They just do it regardless. It's a design feature. Don't argue , we are the Herrenvolk. Produces a real ear splitter now and then. I quite like it, adds a bit of character.
