Fit like, thought i'd join up as seona has mentioned how good you have all been to her over the last wee while.

Seona & Ewan are good friends of mine and I was planning on coming ot visit at the back end of this year. Even though revent events have been very hard for seona she still wants me to come over. Well, I think I just mite.

Ideas and locations of places to visit in the south island for a tourist would be much appreciated.

Kia ora, BigSteve, welcome to KB,
I live in Christchurch, and have been riding as part of the KB Wednesday Night Ride crew, which is where I met Ewan and Seona.
What to see in the South Island, then...it probably depends on what your transport will be, and how long you have. There are any number of day trips from Christchurch (I am assuming you will be based in Christchurch?), including the Kaikoura coast road; Arthurs Pass/Lewis Pass; the Canterbury High Country .
Going further afield you would have choices around the West Coast; Central Otago; Aoraki-Mt Cook area; Catlins Coast; Milford Sound and Te Anau. All scenic and worth a look.
The "HEMA New Zealand Motorcycle Atlas" by Peter Mitchell, if you can acquire one, may be useful to you. It has been for me (planning last years North Island trip, and this years one).
If you can't find one in your neck of the woods, I happen to have one not currently being used...you have the better part of a year to prepare, I guess.
No doubt other KB'ers will be along with advice, some of it useful, even...

Thanks for the warm welcome and replies. Leadon, I have about 2 n a half weeks in south NZ. I will be spending a couple of days with seona then doing a loop heading north, coming down the east coast and back up the west coast to spend my last few days with seona.

Looks Like I may be over your way over xmas n new year now due to having to move my dates (airlines doubled the cost of the flight due to the festive period - how nice of them!)

helenoftroy, would be great to meet you. same here, any friend of seona n ewans is a friend of mine ;)

will be in a hire car as my other half isn't ready for touring on the back of a bike yet but will look up that book to see what may be of interest.

warm wishes fae cold n snowy scotland!

been a while since i was last on here!

Plans have changes as i am now getting marries in september 2011. This has put a spanner in the works for coming over this winter. However, seona has suggested nz as a honeymoon for next year. It will mean i'll have to sell my bike to afford the tickets but to be honest, it'd be worth it and i can always save and buy another bike when i get back.

Seona has kindly offered us digs and transport for the time we are there if we go, one thing i am unsure of is how much exploring can we do if we are based in christchurch for the holiday?

GREAT place too be based, in the middle of south island , I'm sure a spare bike is floating round somewhere, plenty of things to do , and places for the two of ya to hide away when needed......:innocent:.
I'm sure seona will have some new walls up in her house by then!
