Last thread got smashed into the 2009 one, so lets start again.
Round Ruahine Range Ride
Back by popular demand. Last years ride here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/117874-RRRR-(Round-Ruahine-Range-Ride)-6-7-March-2010)
Two day adventure ride. Big bike friendly. Some gravel road riding experience required please.
Date = March 6th and 7th
Start = Woodville (hit the road at 9am). Can pick up some riders from Ashhurst (9.30ish). There is gas at Ashhurst.
Saturday = Ride over the Saddle Road to Ashhurst. Ride north up Pohangina Valley, with a side trip up Takapari road. Back roads through to Taihape for lunch. Ride over the Taihape/Napier road (Gentle Annie) with a couple of little side trips into the Kaweka's if time.
Stay = Mangatutu hot springs (tent). Negotiable. How about we see who's keen. Softy's can stay in Napier.
Sunday = In to Taradale for gas and brunch. Ride south to Woodville taking the coastal route. Ride up Whariti for lookout finish, or have a quiet pootle along North Range Road.
Distance = 550km total (large tank required, 250km 'ish')
If we get good weather, there will be spectacular views. Bring a camera.
This will be a leisurely ride with many stops. 50% winding seal, 45% gravel, 5% track. There's a bit of everything, without going overboard.
Who's in? Calendar here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2416&day=2010-3-6&c=0)

Open bean can....cook them on cooker....eat them....clean can....fill can with water....brew your coffee in can....simple.... I thought you were a boy scout. Tin a beans get you anywhere. You don't need all that fancy crap. ;)
Oh....and a hip flask....that's essential.

yea been a while, when up in the bush, we just made a hole in top of tin and sat beside the camp fire, that worked well..

Somehow the 2010 thread got combined with the 2009 one, so I started again. We are doing the same loop as last year (clockwise). If time, there are a few side roads we can explore. Howie seems to be able to sniff out a few good tracks.
I'm about 50/50 on the camping thing. Don't know if I can be bothered carting a tent, food, beer, etc...

Having no working bikes limits riding. Teach me for stripping out working parts before the parts order has arrived. But still better than letting it get to big bang stage. I could still make brum brum in the garage noises though.
Parts are finally alll here, now waiting for time to fit them.
Yes, I intend to do the RRRRR. I thought camping sounded cool. Rum solves all of the objections you raised. But I can understand that Joe's comments re nuddy bathing may have raised other as yet unresolved issues for you.....:eek5: all things considered....

Is that like a dare? It's actually real good in gravel, as Crazyfrog discovered. Blitzed that Gravel road into the Cold Kiwi a couple of yrs running. Quite comfy on the run up from Wgtn. But don't think Mandy would let me take it on the RRRR. Its her only transport.

Well, that's poor planning on my part if this coincides with the CCA.
By the way, I got kinda lost today on the way to Napier. Well, not really lost. Perhaps confused, or....OK.....lost. I found a real cool little track.......no camera though....bugger

nope it doesn't coincide with it, but have to free up the time to one or both, plus the finance's as i'm also off to the western isle soon after the CCA which is the 20th of March I think.

Ok, time to get this thread going again.
I've been working all sorts of hours lately, so decided to take the afternoon off and do a quick scope ride for RRRR Sunday.
Didn't take many photos, but here's a few.
1. Getting out of the sun. Found a nice little rest area.
2. Few walking tracks that may be worth exploring one day
3. Waipawa River
4. Little track I found that runs along the river.
5. Met this guy camping on the track. I stopped so I wouldn't scare his horse. Now this guy is a real adventurer. Rides all over the country doing fencing and casual farm work. Who needs creature comforts.
6. The track goes for about 3 or 4 km and comes out at a reserve.

23rd February 2010, 20:54
7. Kept following the track....until it ran out....
8. Found some other nice tracks, but all dead ends.
9. Ripped out to Pourerere beach. Low tide....awesome.
10. Rode the beach all the way to Blackhead. Couldn't resist...:innocent:
11. Heading back inland towards home. Real nice roads through Te Ure, on the way back to Dannevirke.

Had a real good blast. Some or all of these tracks/roads (except the dead ends) will be included on the Sunday ride. All easy on big bikes.
So, how many takers. Throw your name up on the calendar here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2416&day=2010-3-6&c=0)
I guess we should work out who's camping at the hot springs, and who's taking the soft option. I don't know if I can be fooked carting a tent around. :baby:

I was keen to camp, mainly to keep costs down, but also for the hell of it. Some of that is weather dependent. It's all weight to carry (tent, sleeping mat, cooking gear, food, something to make the evening convivial...).
Someone could possibly share with me - cozy 2 man tent. Preferably female, tall & shapely, but I'm willing to negotiate. :innocent:
If you intend to bail on the camping option Bart, you need to make a group executive decision SOON.

Still interested in joining this ride, but can't confirm to I work out a couple of things. Bart I've also been trying to find out more about those roads up behind Taihape(ridge road Sth, and Kaweka road) It seems that Ridge road south is now locked up from where I got to last time, and I haven't had any luck in finding any info on who to contact about access.
Camping at the hot springs would be good provided we can cross the river where we did, and woud probably give enough time to explore up Lotkow, and Makahu saddle roads as well. That is if everyone has enough fuel.

No camping fee  (but there's a reason for that).
The time thing is crap. I did the hot springs to Napier in under an hour. They are allowing for idiot camper van drivers who drive at 20kmh on gravel.

Based on previous rides, we may be a bit pushed for time for exploring. I'd like to try that little track we did last time (where I fell off). If we make good time, we could have a nosey up Comet hut again, or try that other road you were looking for.
We can play it by ear, as if the weather is average, we may miss Takapari which will free up an hour or so.

yep I agree with you about the time thing Bart, another choice could be miss both comet hut, and lawrence rd(the one I was looking for) and do one of either lotkow rd, or hawkes bay's kaweka rd (Makahu saddle) the roads just back from the hot springs. would also depend on peoples fuel capacity though.

Hey GPS. Call in to my place on the way through Dannevirke. I'll PM my address. I'll be leaving here about 8.40. Doesn't sound like anyone's meeting at Woodville, so we'll be able to blast through to Ashhurst. :scooter:

I've got the 18 litre IMS tank on mine. Get about 280km to reserve. Carrying a small fuel can isn't too bad. Just transfer it through to the bike tank as soon as you can.

All sounds good, thanks for giving her a nice birthday treat - what a pal!
Oh, presume that you will fit a child seat on the back for an 18month old, and a good supply of nappies (The KTM hard parts catalogue lists most things!). Seeing as its her B'day its your turn to change em!
I think that Leanne deserves a medal for letting me out to play for her birthday weekend, as well as baby sitting Tom and JMJ for her Birthday!

Just playing with some numbers...
Only getting 170-180kms on a tank with Current muffler / jetting etc, extra 5 litres plus extra weight means I better bring a length of tube for siphoning as well!

OK guys, here's a rough idea of times. It should work out something like this.
Woodville = 9.00am (don't think anyone will be there....but you never know)
Ashhurst = 9.30am (at the gas station. Hope it's open)
Taihape = 1.00pm?
Last time we got to Taihape at about 2pm, but we were in a larger group, and having lots of stops. A lot will depend on whether the weather is nice enough to try Takapari.
I've done Ashhurst to Taihape by a similar route in 2 hours (without Takapari), but that was getting along pretty quick. :scooter:
I'm getting excited about this. Even washed the bike. :gob:
bart
4th March 2010, 19:32
Be prepared, if the weather is crap, we may not make the little river crossing required to go the direct route to the hot springs. This will add about an hour of riding to the trip going the long way round. We may need a plan 'B'....(Westshore Holiday Park?).
Sunday Brunch - 10am 'Trio Cafe & Restaurant' in the guts of Taradale. It'll take just over an hour to get there from the hot springs, and about 15 minutes from Westshore (if you don't get lost).
We can discuss the route south over breakfast. I've got a few ideas, but it depends what you guys want to see, and how early you want to get home.

I dont think I've found time to wash mine since ...October!!! Ooops! That was before the ill fated washed out trip to Cnut hill, remember that Bart!
Just spent an hour in the garage; making a rack out of a chopping board (10mins) finding the tent (45mins!) checking air pressures and oiling the chain (5 mins) So apart from packing a back pack, I'm ready to go!
Joe, I'm gonna have to take the missus out now tomorrow night if your cancelling your romantic trip to castle point. I knew the lure of sweaty men and hot springs would pull you in....

Washed the bike? I washed mine, changed the oil & filters, checked the valves, cleaned the air filter, changed all the wheel bearings & fitted new sprockets. Just have to go get a chain in town today & fit it up as Cycletreads 'Urgent Delivery' is apparently 1 week AKL - ROT in my case. (at least they called up this morning & admitted to stuffing up the order)
Metvuw says sweet as for Sat, maybe a little rain in the east on Sun, Metservice says the weekend is fooked, stay home. Just have to suck it & see I guess - bailing for a cabin if the weather is arse Sat night is probably a good plan.

Well, we're back.
Seven of us did the ride. Clint & Rosie didn't make it due to issues with the 250. We chase drizzle most of saturday, but it really didn't set in until going over the Gentle Annie. Diidn't make it to the Hot Springs - the river crossing looked brown & swift (even though Gav tried to tempt us across by doing it 4 times). We went to Westshore Holiday park at Napier for the night instead.
Today rode a hell of a lot of magnificant backroads, culminating in an up hill version of the Makairo Track. GPSman suggested we were all slick bastards given the state of our tyres (Gav & Bart did you make it back without any hiccups?).
More once I've had some sleep.

Thanks Bart for a great weekend
mid size adv bikes are awesome things - what other type of bike allows you to ride like a retarded untalented Valentino Rossi one minute then hoon around on some dirt roads then climb up a muddy slippery slidey track (Makiro backwards) - all in the same afternoon
what a great way to spend a couple of days :)

Meh :(
We stayed in Taupo on Friday night, and timed our escape so we wouldn't get tangled up in all the road closures for the iron man. We got most of the way to Turangi before Clint noticed oil all over my back wheel.
The countershaft seal had come out, so Clint glued it back in, we put in more oil, and took off again. And the oil fell out again <_<
Clint went back to Taupo (through ironman traffic mayhem) and got his mum's trailer to rescue the Sherp. Meanwhile I waited patiently on the side of the road next to Tongariro prison.
But, the sherp is now fixed, and other than the offending seal, nothing else was damaged.

At the river after the Gentle Annie (shortcut to the Hot Springs). Gav was showing us how easy the river crossing was. We didn't believe him, so he crossed about 4 times. River was running brown and fast, so the rest of us bloused out. Looked to be raining quite heavily in the hills anyway, so was probably a wise move to abandon the Hot Springs idea. We all headed into Napier to the Westshore Holiday Park and nice warm showers, and even nicer cold beer.

I've dropped my bike 3 times since Christmas, and they've all been on this crappy little nothing track. :shit:
So do you want to do that short little track again Bart, third time lucky?
Luckily the bog hole had dried up. Would be mighty slippy in winter.
Nah it'd probably be that wet it wouldn't be slippery.
Great photo's as usual from all of you, sounds like a great trip.

Yeah, first time with you Howie, it was a broken Clutch lever. This time I dropped it once on each side. Gear lever rotated on the spline, so I had to ride out in first gear until I got a chance to fix it. Trail Wings and grass do not mix.
I'll get Sundays photos up tonight.

Got my new tyres today!!! Michelin MT23's Best (well, most expensive) tyres I 've ever bought, and first time not made in a third world country! Hope these do better than the "Trail wolf's" (or Death wings!) that lasted about 1500kms of road and gravel before the canvas is showing...
So all ready for the next one guys, Just needs heaps of warning to plan my time around it.
Such a shame we didnt get to the hot springs, we really should try and get a backcountry camp trip together, DOC site or similar...
I'm gonna go off and look up some good locations in the lower north Island, and suggestions that combine some good offroad riding to get there, and back?
Have Tent, have bike, have "tin -o-spag", have tyres! will camp!

Sounds like a good idea to me.
Most of the Doc campsites are listed for the various regions on the links on This page ( http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-stay/conservation-campsites-by-region/ ). Other than that do a search for regional parks, as lot of them have camping areas as well.
The problem I have with camping is I end up carrying heaps of gear, need to learn to take less:yes:

On Sunday we decided to head south early, in case the forecasted bad weather did turn up. We found an awesome windy sealed road off highway 50, then onto a track that folllows the Waipawa river.
29. Start of the track, discussing the meaning of life, or maybe the optimum tyre pressure for a white KLR front tyre. 5 psi might be a bit low.
30. Steve, coming out of the track.
31. On the Waipawa river. Luckily we don't have to cross.
32. Pourerere. The planned beach section was out. The forecasted storm was holding offshore, but was certainly stirring up a mean swell.
33. Somewhere near Porangahau.
34. Awesome hard packed gravel

Camp leader....doesn't 'camp' have another meaning?
It was YOUR idea to do the Makairo. I certainly wasn't complaining though.
Big versions of these photos will be available under 'Barts Photos' in my signature in about 7 minutes 56 seconds. Just keep clicking the photo until it gets big, yadda yadda blah blah.
Cheers for an awesome ride guys. I might have to sort out a winter run somewhere. Perhaps a wee bit shorter.
