Finally found a reason to remove helmet at the servo...
Gassed up yesterday at Gull, Norton Road, The Tron. Non-manned servo with eftpos pay terminals so I never remove the helmet. All good up until yesterday.
The terminal on my half of the place was up the shit so I had to walk across to the other one. Did the deed, turned around to walk back to the bike - straight into the path of a fucking great SUV pulling away after filling up. BOOM! Straight into the fender (I know why they are called that now too!).
Fortuminately, he was going slow and being such a nimble, fleet-footed young man myself, :yeah: I just bent over the fender, absorbed what little impact there was and carried on my merry, albeit chastened, way. The leathers helped too - no bruises or grazes. The looks on the faces of other patrons around were priceless...
I didn't see or hear him (plugz4lugz in place under the helmet). Lucky not to become a hood ornament I guess...
Moral of the story: Look before you leap across the servo forecourt...

I don't remove my helmet unless I need to do number 1's before the ride. But alas, I don't use ear plugs, but I've tried to talk to guys with helmets on (who do use them) and they can't hear very well, so I kinda think you may have heard the vehicle if you'd not worn them. However, good you ok, but I imagined you in your leathers, with helmet on ................. well, I'm still imagining it and ...........
Brilliant that your leathers saved you and you had no bruising :killingme :killingme
[sorry, I really am.... I don't mean to laugh so much ]

I bet ACC would've charged any injury costs to the motorbike account even though the bike was parked five metres away..."OOOO lookee 'ere - 'e's got levvers on - must be a motorbike accident!!! Raise their bloody charges some more!"

I'd say more reason NOT to remove it - then no-one can see your blushing face!

If you had a similar accident again wouldn't you want your helmet on in case you hit your head on the vehicle or ground?

So the SUV driver has no claim against your bike insurance as you were not on your bike when you attacked and vandlaised his vehicle?
Glad you're OK though. Could have been an unfortunate day spoiler.

You're in good company, currently, it seems to be all the rage to get cleaned up by a train while crossing the tracks using an iPod

Good point - hadn't thought of that...

Possibly so. But then again, if I had the helmet off, I would have wider field of vision and also would have had the earplugs out so would've heard the great snorting gas guzzling engine and not stepped in front of it...maybe...

Given my current financial situation, that might not be such a bad idea...

Another good reason, at least for me, is so I dont get called Sir by the nice young bait that usually works at these places. Have an ongoing discussion with a nice young man at one of my local gasup's about his first conversation with me.....He did apologise but still gets redfaced and looks bashful when I ride up. Damn it, not my fault Im so tall and the jacket hides my curves.
I consider it my mission in life to challenge others preconceptions about bikers...

I did something very similar a few weeks back, got off the bike, took my gloves off & turned around straight into a car that was squeezing past. Lot's of big OH! expressions. No peripheral vision or sound. No damage either.Phew.
