Thought I might have had to give this a miss but Cyclespot reckon they'll have my wheel repaired by Friday. It shall be interesting to see how the numbers compare to the first two rides - it is Valentines day after all.
How does this ride compare to Glen Murray & Paparimu? I'm still very much a beginner, I enjoyed Paparimu but didn't enjoy being stuck on the big clay hill for an hour.

I can't comment on the comparison but I would expect similar terrain with some bits you will find challenging......thats why you go isn't....to learn?
These are family rides and are aimed at providing a ride to suit the majority of the trail riding population from learners to competent riders, make sure you stick to the B loop and get competent on that, if there are hard bits, stop and watch some others and learn how they get around the obstacle...ask questions, people will always try and help.
Make sure your bike is well prepared, has decent tyres and set at a suitable pressure (8-12psi?) then get out there and enjoy yourself.

Yeah it's the 3rd time they've come loose now! Loctite doesn't seem to work. This time round the nuts stayed on for 4 weeks. This time I lost 2 bolts, bent two, dented the swingarm.. this is not good.

Did them last year and the GM and Paps this year. Comparing, I'd say last years Waeranga was hillier otherwise a very similar ride. If you enjoyed GM and Paps you'll enjoy Waeranga. Having said that Waeranga ride this year appears to be located across the road - which I haven't done.

Sounds like I'll cope if I stick to the B loop then. Have really enjoyed the first two rounds. Not bad for only owning a bike for 3 months.
Just have to see if my mate can get a leave pass or I'll be riding solo - perks of single life.

I'll look out for you. I'll be towing a 3 bike trailer with a Blue/Silver RVR. At this stage there'll be a KTM and a Suzuki DR125 on it. Might have a RM80 and possibly a YZF450 as well.

hey Guys, just a bit of a warning about the ride tomorrow, we have not been able to put in a 5km easy loop this time, so we will have the mini track and the main loop which is 27km approx, the main loop is a bit more techincal than we really wanted with a couple of quite hard hills we can not avoid due to some restrictions with land, so basically i am saying if you have someone with you that is very learner and they want to try the big loop for the first time, this is not the ride for them.
thanks and i will see you there

561 riders today, sorry about the late start with having to reroute the track, but it made it a lot better,
and then the helicopter, a lot of people got to see the best piece of helicopter flying i have ever seen, to place one wheel on a knob at the bottom of a gully so we could load someone in, those Westpac flyers are something else, thanks to everyone that helped out and waited patiently for us to clear everything,
if anyone has video or photos of it the pilot would love to see them, email me them at scott@mrmotorcycles.co.nz or post them on here,

Was a really good ride! For the first time I felt I needed a bit more out of the little Ktm! It felt a bloody flat all day!
Its going fine but I'm gonna have to jet it a bit less rich, give the power valve a quarter of a turn, and maybe have to lash out for a $30 dollar plug instead of an $8 dollar one!
Ah well my new riding buddies where great! Xen, Oldschool, Hamdog and jinxcy met up at the BP and we traveled down together.
We put the Gazebo and KB flag up on the ute and Climintie, Flying Cr and Noobi found us as well! great bunch, great day! Thanks lads.
There was nothing to hard there scott, good track mate!! I actually made it up all the hills without arsing off once for a change!
Finally getting the hang of, less throttle = more grip LOL!! Hard to teach an old dog new tricks Aye!!
We didn't get a final loop in as the waiting time was a bit long on some of the bits others found a bit technical, that first traffic jamb was a monster, but it is a trail ride so thats all good!!
I guess you guys decided to close it down when the river bank got so rutted very few could make it LOL!! That was my only blue of the day ended up with my butt in the river!
Cheers scott great day!!
Ah well thats my ride report! Cheers all!
Btw Geenmachine it was me that tooted at you when you where waiting in the way out I recognized the ute from your description!

I had an incident free first loop, second loop was going well, alot faster, all the way up to that bad accident:doctor:, was all good from there till I hit the river crossing, didn't have enough momentum and got stuck  had to drag the bike back into the creek, and run at it again.
I was stuffed after that, as you head up through the bush and out at the top you go down the steep hill throught the gate and up steep wooped out hill thats where I flipped it, had to roll back down to the gate to restart the bike, had another crack got almost to the top and flipped it again:doh:

Nearly didn't go to this ride as we spent Saturday with KTMboy on his adventure ride. Woke up at 6.30 to heavy rain so rolled over till 8.30, when Sophie demanded I get up and take her riding..... First loop was a bit of a challenge for her, but she made it up and down all the hills completely on her own, passing a lot of horizontal "better" riders in the process. The track was simply stella in the afternoon, and while Sophie is still a bit tentative on the steeper down hills, she fair flew up all the uphills and has really got the hang of using the clutch to control drive, while keeping the revs up... VERY proud Dad........ AND she's already cleaned her bike and riding gear......
So, thanks to KTMboy for a sneak preview of his new adventure ride on Saturday and to Scott411 for an awesome Sunday.. Two beaut days riding..... Life IS good....

I went through exatly the same thing with the Cr250 ( good bike in the right hands) similar horsepower to a 450 4T (49-51 horsepower ish). I was always tentitve on the gas and it would get away from me every now and then. After many years of karting (I know 2 smokers pretty well) therefore a 2Smoker it had to be, so I could do all my own work. I've only been riding trials/MX for 3 years or so and with the japs going out of 2smokers that only really left an 03 Ktm in my price bracket. I looked at the 250 and 300, then discovered the 200 had a 125 size frame with good torque and horse power. The 250/300 share the 300 frame and the 125/200 the 125 frame. If I was going to step down might as well go the whole hog so I went for the smaller chassis (125 size) with the 200cc 42 horse smoker in it for torque. Bought a 03 200exc then another for to replace my sons CR125, then a good deal on the 08 came up. As you can probably tell I bloody love the thing! Good enough for my fat tired old arse! LOL!!
You should have come and found us I don't mind swapping for a loop??
I am not saying you should get a Ktm by any means as a Wr or a 250 4T would be good as well, but ride them all then choose!
Really just saying I was in the same boat as you and going smaller made me enjoy the sport so much more and at my age/experiance winning isn't an option so it worked out good! Do it mate big cc's on the side didn't make me fasterer! LOL!!! you won't regret it!

i just spoke to Ian's wife, Ian was the poor chap helicoptered out, he has a few broken ribs and a punctured lung, but should be relesed this afternoon, he was not on the green quad that was at the bottom of the gully, that happened while we were attending to him, it is quite impressive how high quads can bounce,
while we are talking about injuries, i would like to thank the medics from the Pukekohe Motorcycle Club for helping us out with 5 of the 6 rides this year, we had two advanced paramedics and a qualified anthetist there on sunday, which means pain releif and the level of care was much higher this year. thanks

We saw a quad guy loose it. Not a big loose but went off on a corner then rolled down the bank. Then the bloody quad came and rolled over him!
How come they always seem to hit the rider?? BLOODY DANGEROUS things I reckon!
Anyway thanks from us all for the ride Mate! Cheers!

You say "bucking bronco".... what do you mean by this?
I only ask as the bucking almost makes me think of suspension? Set up wrong perhaps? How much do you weigh?
I'm 19 and well under 6 foot and weigh in at approx 65 kilo..... I know my RMZ has far more power than I or most other people can handle, but it is at the turn of MY wrist...
I also know that I would be quicker in most places on a 250 as it would be alot more nimble. But the explosive power of the big bore is just too addictive...
I plan to look seriously into the KTM 350's when they are around as a step forward in speed. If this doesn't eventuate for me I'll be looking at an injected 250 with 290 kit and a pipe.... But not before putting in a bunch more hours on the big bore as training, it's certainly more of a workout to ride and the quicker I get on this through the trees the quicker I know I'll be on something lighter.
All I'm saying is think a little more about the 450 before you flick it and lose a bunch of cash (presuming you bought it new) just coz it gave you a scare or two.

Yeah the housing is a waterproof polycarbonate enclosure, for audible sound to record it needs a sensitive high gain mic, because the clasp that clamps the enclosure shut is broke more sound can enter and the mic overloads. I'll tape some sticky over the mic next time.
Gearing on the old girl is too tall, I'll try a front sprocket with one less tooth. Maybe then I'll keep up with yah on the sprints!

not smaller front ...
bigger rear
hamd0g
16th February 2010, 20:01
its a lot cheaper to do the front... around $20.... one tooth less at the front is equal to approx three teeth more at rear. if you already have a 13 on the front id go bigger at the rear as the tighter curve of the smaller diameter 12 tooth sprocket can wear your chain quicker. well thats what ive read somewhere anyway..
green machine
16th February 2010, 20:04
So what does 1 going 1 tooth up on the front equate to?
hamd0g
16th February 2010, 20:09
will have the opposite effect.... as if you were going down 3 at the back... higher top end speed...but less torque, so takes a bit longer to get there...
maybe not less torqe but the gears will be slightly longer, giving the feeling of less torque imo.
Reckless
16th February 2010, 20:37
yeh like typical Enduro mod for the Cr 250 was to go from a 13 front to a 14 The motor delivered enough torque to handle this and it mediated a lot of the sting out of the bike. Ie it made it more enduro baised. Although a good rider like B000M (who has raced a lot) can handle it people like me and Cheese preferred the less savage power hit of the 14 front for forest riding, and climbing muddy inclines etc.
I think you get the drift now?
Btw they say it is better to do the 3 teeth change on the rear as going smaller in the front (if this is the preference) wears the chain more. Depends on what you want to do with your wheel base length as well of coarse. Handling is a thing some forget when they stuff around with gearing? You might decide to add a link to your chain to keep the rear in the same place if you make the rear sprocket bigger???
So what does 1 going 1 tooth up on the front equate to?
The above might be worth considering for you Green machine have a search or talk to the Kawasaki boys and see if it something they do to mild out the 450 (Not sure if they do this sorta thing on 4 strokes). Scott ( Mr Motocycles) should be able to tell you as I have no clue but its worth $20 bucks for a new front sprocket to give it a go??

along with a G2 Throttle Cam System,
The G2 is a bit pricey so leave that till last, adjusting the throttle cam makes a big difference (it did on my 990) but you can also do it yourself with a file or Dremel tool in about 5 minutes.......not as adjustable as the G2 system but $200 cheaper, just buy a spare throttle tube so you can revert to original if you need to.

Would this not be the case either way? I'd expect that to be the result of lowering the gearing no matter which way it was done? Or is there something about changing it at the rear that does it differently?

he came off a two wheeler and bounced a long way down a steep hill, was prob 100 metres below the track, and to who how steep it was, you could not see him from the track above,
while we were sitting there helping him, a quad came off the track into the same gully, he was prob 1/2 a km before where ian came off but it was a good veiw seeing the quad roll down the hill, the quad rider did not injure himself

Would this not be the case either way? I'd expect that to be the result of lowering the gearing no matter which way it was done? Or is there something about changing it at the rear that does it differently?
NO Its how the power is delivered
Think of it like this if you can
with a 13 t front / assume the back wheel is locked....the bike will climb up the chain easier than it would with a 14 or 15 t front ...
The FINAL ratio between the front and rear may change but thats only going to alter top speed in each gear.

Now you've really got me thinking!
I can see what your saying but I would have still thought that the engine (and therefore the shaft that the front sprocket is mounted to) would still drive the wheel (being where the resistance is) in the same way if the final drive ratio was the same no matter what combination of sprockets was used to acheive this.
I don't doubt your knowledge as I've seen many intelligent posts from you in the past I'm just not seeing the difference, I'm extremely interested in the idea behind it though as I'm looking to get more top end speed out of my RMZ but certainly don't want to lose any more of the explosive wheelstand out of corner power than I need to....
Don't shoot me if this post is a mess, it would have been better a few beers back... Maybe

Assuming the rear wheel is locked, either way the engine will still stall. Maybe a little more possibility to stretch the chain with a smaller front sprocket.
Other factors could be factored into this debate. The cost of a $40 front sprocket over a $120 rear sprocket is a good argument. The clearance between the rear sprocket and the chain guide is another. The requirement to lengthen the chain length could be thrown in. Whether an increase of 2.5 teeth is acceptable or whether you'd want just a 1 rear tooth increase could be another argument.
I'll stick to changing the front sprocket and making that front wheel pop up easier! Done.

Unfortunatly its not quite as simple as going from a 14 t to a 13 t on the front as the 13 t will make it a lot more prone to wanting to lift the front.
Having actually owned the bike .....
no matter how the gearing change is done and the effects on the drive (ie stress on the sprockets). And I think IIIRII theories are correct! ( more on that later).
The effect on the bike will be the same no matter how you change the gearing. You will get more low down grunt! Is this a good thing if your not an expert rider my opinion NO.
You end up fighting the bike more when you don't need to Ie on slippery slopes, in the trees and it will charge ahead out of corners etc. It will be like a bull at a gate! If you want this sort of power delivery go for it but if you want tractable torque stick with the bigger front. Simple as that! Just because you have more instant power doesn't mean you will be faster, you have to be good enough to hit those berms hard and fast so your ride is flowing not losing your momentum in wheel spin and outa control power! You will turn it into an MX bike rather than a enduro bike with this approach. I for one went through this with the CR it was a brilliant bike in the hands of a better rider but for me no where near as predictable or controllable. Up to you but be careful you don't end up with a savage beast your fighting all the time.
Now to IIIRII theories? Putting a 13 on the front IMHO will put more pressure on the rear sprocket. Most people do it this way but I reckon the better way is to do it via the rear and increase the length of the chain to maintain wheelbase length. It is well noted on the net this puts a lot less strain on the drive components. Also if you shorten the wheelbase you will have to fight harder to keep the front on the ground compounding the aggressive gearing. It will also reduce the turning radius of the front sprocket wearing the chain more (from what I have read).
So its up to you, you have our opinion on the effects. Personally I wouldn't do it. The change your talking about would slow me down in all areas other than an open blast along a paddock or a road section!
Just my 2c???

Ok lets assume we want more top speed
The current ratio between the output shaft and the rear wheel is 14 48 so 48/14 = 3.42 :1
Lets assume this gives 100kph @ 8000 rpm.
You want more top speed you need a lower ratio maybe 15 48 so 48 /15 = 3.2:1 which will give about 5% more top end.
When you lower the top speed by raising the final ratio 13/48 3.7:1 theres more than one way of doinf this .
You can run 13/48 or 14/52 or 15/56 or being sill but still demonstrating what i mean 25/92 these all give the same TOP speed @ the same given RPM.
But like I said before, the way the engine can deliver the power (torque) to the wheel is very different , if you think of the sprocket being a lever , the engine will move the lever with a lot less effort the shorter it is. (smaller radius sprocket) therefore it will initiall move the bike much more reactivley than with a longer lever and it will be more controlable and more progressive.

Ok so you cant edit your own post, shot kiwibiker...
So what Im saying is Im not disputing the cost difference, but I am saying theres a huge difference in
the various effects from altering ratios.
A smaller front will make it a lot snappier in wet or slow stuff and it will make it a lot more prone to wanting to lift the front.

Jeez theres a lot of overthinking goin on here! That slippery hill caught me out because I had to stop 1/3 of the way up because a rider had broadsided across my path. In retrospect if I had slid back down to the bottom and taken it again it would have been much easier than trying to attempt it again from where I had stopped. Momentum was the key there. The next loop around without a traffic jam it was an easy climb.
In tight stuff the bike does seem to feel it needs to be revving higher than it is, because it tends to lug a lot (uh oh here we go, open up the fan the clutch debate). Anyway moot point I prefer a bike that wants to pop the front wheel and this one does feel a bit *tame (*edit* heavy on the front wheel). Good to hear it can with a minor change of gearing.

Good to hear it can with a minor change of gearing.
Gearing is a huge difference, one in the front transforms a bike and you should try it, it's cheap and educational (not taking the piss). At the end of the day you need a bike that provides traction & power as you like to use it and the only way to find out is to try it. Go for it.

I found dropping a front tooth on my old KX125 made it climb hills easier, I could control the front wheel over logs better and it hit the pipe quicker. Before that the thing was a dog.
With my sons RM, with a larger front sprocket it had no torque, when you revved the crap outa it to go forward, there was nothing then came the wheelie. Losing a tooth in the front and it is easier to start off and climbs hills a lot easier without the fear of a wheelie. So theres the other spectrum to the debate. Hmm I wonder why trials bikes are so tame (controllable)?

Sorry Oldshool I wasn't pointing to any one event, or critising your riding, that hill was a mess with other riders everywhere and I could have very very easliy been in the same boat. Sometimes its luck of the draw on those rides, my opinions where an overall observation. And yes you may be correct in my overthinking this issue as I didn't ride your bike. It's just that it seemed to already deliver really good power, in fact when I was following you you roosted me heaps without even trying to (or where you LOL!!) and I think that going to a 13 front may be the wrong move.
Anyway moot point I prefer a bike that wants to pop the front wheel and this one does feel a bit tame. Good to hear it can with a minor change of gearing.

haha no I wasn't getting too prickly...was I?...haha. No seriously the bike is cool for open hill riding, try it out at the sandpit, like say The Finisher, and you'll be thinkin twice about the gearing. Plenty of bottom end and tall gearing makes for plenty of rear wheel rotation at low revs. I don't think reducing a tooth up front is going to turn it into a firebreathing 2T beasty, it has quite a broad tame powerband, and I ain't gonna be flipping it left right and centre because of it.

But the engine isn't pushing on a lever it's turning the countershaft.....
And whatever combination of sprockets you use the resistance to the countershaft will be the same at the same final drive ratio, as you've shown above indicated with top speed.....
I can't see how acheiving the ratio differently would make any difference myself (apart from increased chain wear with smaller front sprockets), despite googling to try and find something to support your theory.
I'll be going 1 tooth up on the front next week in search of more top speed, I'd say my bike should have enough power that the loss isn't an issue but if it is maybe I'll try doing it your way just as an experiment

Interesting thread guys.
RITTR I think you and IIIRII are both saying the same thing differently. If the gearing is the same, then is the load on the countershaft the same too? I'd say yes.
If I add an extra tooth on the front sprocket then I'm pushing more chain around per rotation. The chain connects to our load, the rear wheel as we all know. If the chain is now moving faster than standard due to an extra tooth on the front then we're presenting more load to the motor for a given RPM compared to the standard ratio's at the same RPM. So basically the rear wheel turns further for the same RPM. This is all good assuming the motor has the torque to pull it off.
If you then increase the # of teeth on the rear sprocket too, effectively reducing the load, then you are back where you started. Of course you now have a longer chain and bigger sprockets which means more rotating mass etc.

Well what I am visualising after reading Glenns analogy is if you had an imaginary lever running on a tangent off the rear sprocket and an imaginary lever running on a tangent off the front sprocket and you use your finger to push one or the other and according to Glenn there is a difference. From what I gather he is saying the rear sprocket lever would have more finesse and control turning the 18" rear wheel than if you pushed the imaginary lever on the front sprocket to turn the same 18" wheel. What I have difficulty in accepting is the rear wheel is firmly attached to the rear sprocket and is still 18" in diameter.

In your example it should be 50 mm & 200mm vs 100mm & 400mm.
The mechanical advantage aka gear ratio is the same. A 100mm & 150mm system would run slower though. Assuming the saw blade is at the 150mm end.
Or am I missing something here? :)
Unless you're describing taking up the initial slack in the system? In which case the saw at the end of the 100mm system would be the faster of the two given the same amount of slack in each.
