View Full Version : 1/2 a dual virgin

Having just replaced my GS1200 with a DR650 I figure I'm technically half a dual virgin?
Got the road side of things nailed, as in the virgin sense, but now need to find someone/somewhere who will be gentle with me in the dirt!
Pretty stoked about the whole thing really.
So yeah, guess I'm looking for rides & expeditions etc now to cut my teeth.
I see here in Wellington there appears to be relatively regular ride out so that’s cool as well as the ad-hoc shout outs.
What I haven’t been able to find is a list of rides that would include 1/2 day, full day and overnighters obviously in Wellington but if nothing exists also nationally? There appear to be a number of tracks etc scattered about Wellington (& beyond) that most mere mortals are unaware of.
Any hints or directions to sites?
Also have seen trail rides organized by different groups (i.e. clubs, schools etc), are these types of things “us” dual folks frequent?
So fill me on the info and is there room to start a thread of ride choices?
Me, an older (but still bloody handsome) chap who has got a tad tired of the road side of things but still wants a bike to commute daily & enjoy the odd ride out.
Bike is in the shop at mo getting a warrant (tyres mostly) and will need to lower it a bit so out comes the hammer & big crescent in the weekend.
Found some excellent pics of a ride some folks did last year around Ngawai/Cape Paliser & would be dead keen to try that. Have been around to the doc hut on a quad & found that a blast.
Have a good mate who has a bach in the last bay before the lighthouse who I'm sure can talk him into lending me the key & maybe setting up a base for a weekend of riding out that way?
Jolly good

Hi Mark, welcome to dual sport/ adv riding/compromise,
there are indeed a few rides around wellington for day ride.
1. to the south red rocks and beyond, most likely not for the 1200. I go from time to time at lunch time during the week
2. karapoti, about 35km that connects upper hutt with Paraparaumu, plenty of tracks to explore. The easy part is doable on 1200 depends on your level of confidence
3. odlins road, bit more involved at parts than karapoti
4. pilons trucks at the other side of the rimutakas
5. ocean beack, around 15 truck to the locked gate really fun area to play and get confident, plus the few k's left of metal left to get there
To name a few ...
Dayers and longer rides are usually organised by posting on a new thread so its just matter of come along and join the party.
Also on ad v rider there is an interesting thread started by conery http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=539146
Cheers,
Pampa

Also have seen trail rides organized by different groups (i.e. clubs, schools etc), are these types of things “us” dual folks frequent? Some of us do, sometimes on proper dirt bikes, sometimes on the adventure steeds.

Welcome again, you've come to the right place. There are many local rides organised from here, both day and weekend events.
The ones Pampa have mentioned range from beginner to fairly advanced if there's been a bit of harsh weather recently. There's also Sutherlands Hut and various backroads out past Martinborough. Further afield but still a day ride is the Makairo track just out the back of Mangatainoka. Do a search on any of these names in this section of the forum and you'll find pics from previous rides.
We also do weekends away up to the Central Plateau for some awesome riding up there, often joined by some of those latte drinkers from up north.
The Ngawi one you saw I think was organised by Joe, who really is going to organise another Southern Coast Adventure ride, aren't you Joe...
As Joe mentioned I am heading over the hil Sunday to have a very relaxed meander round some roads & tracks Joe knows near Martinborough, you're welcome to join in.

Some more answers for your questions
Any hints or directions to sites? Go to CooneyR's www.advroutes.co.nz, if you have GoogleEarth installed on your PC download the GPS waypoints and tracks file from my signature and you can load the file into GoogleEarth. Doesn't work with GoogleMaps though. I've recorded quite a few of the local rides.
Also have seen trail rides organized by different groups (i.e. clubs, schools etc), are these types of things “us” dual folks frequent? The trail rides seem to be aimed at the hard core weekend warrior trail rider market. Guys that have been on them have indicated you do need a full on trail weapon for them.

Have a good mate who has a bach in the last bay before the lighthouse who I'm sure can talk him into lending me the key & maybe setting up a base for a weekend of riding out that way?Hmmm, does he drink beer? sounds like you need to do some talking to him ;)

Thanks for your informative replies. Will use Google earth, seems to be a great research tool
JMJ & EddieB, will take you up another time. Got family stuff on plus really want to get to know the bike on tarmac first.

any time you like to come over to the rapa.. drop us a line.. always happy to tag along..
take your time on gravel, even some gravel roads catch out the best of us at times...........
do a bit of diging about the ngawi lighthouse, round to white rock station.
it took me a fair bit of arranging to get us in there last time.
but worth the trouble..
maybe we could work together and get us back in there again..
