I really need to service my suspension.
This made me think that perhaps while I'm at it I should get the conventionals revalved and resprung for my weight and type of riding. (I should get in touch with Danger about this :))
Then another option occurred to me. Do the ol' kx125 front end swap instead. Probably cost about the same I would guess. Bit of messing around, but I've read its really worth while.
The last option is to do a basic service on my forks and start saving for a new bike. I've heard RM250's are a good platform to start putting together a grunty but affordable trail bike. Would be a bit of a handful compared to the KDX though! :crazy:

Resprung my KDX mid last year after talking to Gaudenz at Gisler Moto-Technic.
The cost of sourcing a KX front end and rebuilding to suit my requirements was expensive and for the riding I do, the resprung KDX forks are now pretty good.
But like you Krad, I'm now considering upgrading to an RM or YZ just to get that extra bit of power and a great handling bike without any mods!..

if your wanting to upgrade bikes soon id just get the basic service.

In all honesty, if the idea of an upgrade is already in your mind then I'd go with the last option.... Simple service on the forks for next to no money and get saving. Those RM250's are bloody cheap now brand new old stock... Could be a good option.
I'll put my 2c in for the CR250's if thats the sort of range your looking at, bloody brilliant! Mine's an 05 so the last generation and pretty similar to the last of them as made in 07 and I love it. It's still in the shed coz I'm not sure I really want to give it up and go with the RMZ.
Don't let anyone scare you off the MX 2 strokes as a trail bike. They aren't horrible, they aren't unusable and they definately aren't any slower through the bush (look at Rory Mead on his YZ250 for an example). Alot of people have their horror stories but you do need to ride a well set up one and feel it for yourself. It will take some getting used to after the KDX but you will definately learn to ride alot better / faster. From memory the type of riding you guys were telling me that you do is the type where I loved the CR the most.... Personally I think it's a great step up!
Edit: I will add that mines not standard, but it's not that far from it. The mods are reasonably simple and just tweak the bike slightly to make it work for how I want to ride.

Starting to bias towards a new bike. RM250 or YZ250. Would love to get a Huski, but don't have the coin.
The upgrade isn't because I need more power. I don't (or do I:shifty:) but more about riding a bike with modern suspension. Going to be buying my first house this year so I need to purchase all toys while I have some disposable income.
The 9L tank on the RM could be a pain on long rides compared to the generous 11L on the KDX.

Course ya need more power! But yea I get ya on the suspension thing, it's certainly key. You'll find yourself looking at bumps that would have been obstacles on the KDX and lining them up to pop off and jump a little section of trail.
As far as the gas goes, whats a long ride? I think the longest marked loop I've done on the CR was 65kms at a trail ride and it had plenty of gas left after that but I choose to top up rather than risk another loop. But in forest missions a tankful is plenty to finish a camelback and get completely knackered. It will drink it faster than the KDX too tho so it is something to look at.

Have a go on my bike next time I see you. Its got heaps of bottom end, its just a bit more bite than a KDX, but its just a more aggressive power development. you get used to it real fast and find it better to ride. If you don't like it, add a flywheel weight.
But If you want to stick to trails type bikes, get a 250 EXC.
