i need a road legal 250cc or less bike for the mrs to get her licence on
she's only a wee lass so dirt bikes are probably not any good :D

a nice condition xz400,
its had a complete going over,

including.
valve clearances and shim change,
new oil and filter,
new diff oil (its a shafty dont ya know :D)
carbs cleaned, blown through and balanced
new drum shoes on the rear, brakes bled on the front
2 brand new tyres,
the sprag clutch starter has been tightened and new longer bolts installed and preened,
idler gear tightened as well (both loctited)
new starter motor internals including brushes,

square headlight and indicators replaced with round ones (you can have all the square stuff if you want it :D not really my taste)

fork seals replaced, along with the oil (a heavier grade used to stop the diving) air oring seal replaced as well (air preload)

new tci (cdi) and all the electrics tested cleaned and sorted..

the exhaust has been removed, sanded back to bare metal, and had all the dodgy rust spots taken out and plates welded in, and then had 5 or 6 layers of exhaust paint applied,

(if you have read this far, then my guess is that you have also done your research, and found that people complain about the electrics,
really the only problem seems to be the stator and a faulty rev limiter)
i don't know if this is the case on the 400's or just the earlier 550cc bikes, as the stator is fine on this bike, but it comes with a spare just in case :D the rev limiter has been disconnected, (easy to plug back in if you want)

basically this is a well sorted bike, and is very revvy for a vtwin (10.5k redline) mainly because of the very short stroke and large pistons,

its definitely not the fastest 400 out there,
but it would be a good step up from your learner single 250cc (gn ect)
or be a great commuter,
its comfy to ride, is very nimble on the twisty roads,
has plenty of leg room for the tall guys like myself (6'4") but small enough for the shorties like my girlfriend (5'2")

it has rego and wof until the end of june 2010

a swap fell through so she is still up for grabs

new front brake pads are on the way,
ive been using this as a commuter the last few weeks, (still under 27000km at this stage)
while i wait for fork seals to turn up for the mz,
i must say its pretty fun, not fast, but pretty nimble,

open to all offers

i can probably get this bike to hamilton on the weekend of the 6th march
or as far south as christchurch (possibly dunners if need be) over the week around Easter

Could be tempted, have an 89 VTZ250 with 43k on the clock. If interested I could run out and get my restricted, new WoF and some Reg and roadtrip down to Wellington(in Auckland), been meaning to do so anyway so it would be a good excuse rather than going up to Cape Reinga.

Give me a yell and I'll put up pitchas etc, looking to roadtrip shortly after the 26th.
