Hyosung year?

Hey guys,

I have just passed the basic handling skills test and will be sit the written test in the next couple of days.

I am in the market for a 250cc bike and like the Hyosungs as I have heard they are the biggest (physical size) bike out there. I am 6 4' and over 130kg so am really after something more full size than most of the 250s I have seen. All going to plan i will be taking one for a test ride this weekend.

I know that Hyosung are relatively new to making whole motor cycles. I have been told that developments have been made each year. My question is:

Is there a year before which I should not look at buying a Hyosung. Eg "all bikes pre 2007 suffered badly from xyz, this was corrected in the 07 bike"

Nothing wrong with em. the 05's apparently had welding faults - but never appears if you look after em.
Hyo have been making bikes for years - they used to make bikes for Suzuki......and some other history i cant remember

hoyusngs are good bikes, thye are fast and have plenty of toque, they are pretty big, you have to be atleast 5'4 to have your feet flat on the ground. 07 onwards are the best as far as built quality goes, but the '2010 ones are the best.

If you like the hyos, make sure you have a good long ride on at least the R and the Comet. The GT250 Comet has a completely different feel to the GT250R so don't think they are the same bike with no fairings. Put a loud exhaust on them and they are just so much fun.

I've had an early model comet ('03 I think) and I had no problems with it.

nothing wrong with them they have gotten beter every year and areone of the top selling bikes in the country evaan over in aussie. So go hard get one and have fun out there.

well I bought a 2006 model GT have now done 116000km with very few problems

have to admit I am now starting to look for a replacement but will probably still stay with the brand since I have had hardly any trouble with it

I've owned 2, first the GT250R and now the GT650R, both have been great bikes and I would recommended the brand to anyone, also should things go wrong, they are great to deal with regarding warranty issues and almost any parts are now available overnight

My son is over 6ft tall and he had a GSXR250 - fitted his size well, and very reliable. Hyosungs are not known for their reliability. Just do a search on kB and you will find this out. Good luck with your decision, and congratulations on getting your learners :niceone:

I have read about some problems with 05 models and earlier....frame rust issues, something about the cylinder heads, or valves, rear suspension failing.
How many of these were due to poor maintenence is unknown though.
Plus there was the cam chain tensioner issue on more recent models...but not sure if that ever affected NZ bikes.

Luckily I have an 06 model, which I've yet to hear any known problems with...which as it happens I'll be looking to sell soon to get an upgrade :D <hint hint>

They are a very mixed bag those. Seem to last as long as the Jappas if you take very good care of them.

Sat and passed my written test on Saturday

I went for a ride on a GT250R on Sunday. Was a strange feeling. I have only ridden trail bikes before (when I was a kid). I felt really folded up in the leg department on the GT250R. I think that part of this is probably just getting used to the sports bike seating position.

I want to try a Comet this weekend and see how that feels. If i decide to go naked more upright type bike that will open the market to a lot more bikes. decision decisions....

Also thinking maybe a Dual Purpose bike might be better especially given my size. Hopefully I can test ride one of those at the weekend as well.

[...] maybe a Dual Purpose bike might be better...The Comet, and upright bikes in general, are much more friendly learner bikes - steering more sensitive, bar pressure lower, much easier to manage the slow speed stuff, and just feel more "balanced." I am tempted to put DP tyres on one of our Comets just to try it. It'll need a different guard on the front too. The R is more of a sport bike trainer, and can take some time to master U turns etc on it unless you are so inclined.

I ended up trying a range of bikes and have gone with the VTR250. Got the Nice V twin motor and fits me well enough for 9 months till i can get my full. Also helped that i got it for a good price.

I need to say a big thanks to TSS Red Barron who were awesome and let me test ride several of their bikes. Willl be keeping them in mind when it is time for a 600.

Owned a 2007 comet from new 68,000 ks, 2 new tyres, 4 new plugs and a service every 10,000ks no problems. Anyone who says Hyosungs have reliability problems are talking through a hole there no worse than any other bike out their as long as you look after them.
