Any one know why the Beemers on trademe have such high K's?
There are lots of f650's on there with well over 100.000km on it!!!
Never seem to see any other brands with that high kilometers.
Are beemers stronger???
Not that I want beemer tho..

Most iv'e seen are ex-rentals.....

At the risk of getting some on line abuse...

Beemers tend to last a long time and get ridden a lot

I do 30 to 40,000km a year and tend to wear out the other brands :-)

Uh, so what? All the better, saves the running hassles. 100000 is nothing to a BMW. And BMW riders tend to ride them. A lot. A lot further than the latte shop. It's what they do.

What they all said. Some of these bikes are quite possibly ex-rentals but besides that the bikes and some of their owners are capable of big mileage. I have bought several BMW airheads with over 200,000km's on them and wouldn't hesitate to do so again.

Just to make you feel better i'm putting mine up there shortly and it only has 32,000km on it. R1200GS Adventure...

The reason is that those that own the beamers don't mind fixing em up.
Lots of bikes on TM are over 100,000km - but not that the owners know that. I had a GB400 that apparently only had 18,000 on it......engine felt tired so I opened up to find a piston that looked like nearly 200,000km.
Likewise trail bikes with disconnected speedo's. I had a K100 (Kwaka) with over 100,000 (must been a postie or someone) but speedo only read 39,000.

We had an old F650 "funduro" with about 125000 k's on it when we got it. Absolutely reliable machine, had been a BMW rental for most of it's life and was serviced by profesionals.Actually I was talking to guy we sold it to last night and it was still ticking along nicely when he sold it.

So what i'm curious about is, compared to some of these high milege beemers,
What sort of milege are you expecting to get out of KTM 950/990, Transalps, or what ever
without maaaajor surgery.

junkmanjoe
13th February 2010, 08:16
im up to 56,000km, and no major surgery, have been told a 950 in nz was rebuilt around 110,000km mark, but was only needed warn parts replaced..
still going to day, as a daily rider.

My RD04 is up at 86000km (certified) now. Fucked if I know if it runs like new or is tired. Runs not bad for 20 yrs old. Another 14000km and the 5 digit speedo will have ticked over. It will run just like a brand new one then! ha

My 950 adventure is up to 70,000k. I have full service history and there's no record of any heart surgery. It's in the shop at present to sort a seized adjuster on the rear shock but thats about it. And that could have been avoided if regularly sprayed with crc or similiar.

so the adjustor is seized onto he threaded shock body(preload) or is it a damping adjustor?

It's a rebound adjuster and threads into the lower shock mount/base/thingy. While it's fixable it's a messy fix as it involves drilling things out and would cost about the same in labour as to just replace the whole lower shock mount. So I'm now waiting on parts from Austria.

Dakar had to have cam chain adjuster done.... thank god it did not have ABS!

I'm always surprised to hear that, (and I know you've had two good Funduros JATZ) because at 60,000km my ex rental F650 Funduro was falling apart around it's ever reliable Rotax motor. Something to do with being built in Milano, not Munich, I suspect. As I have told anyone who'd listen, I thought it was a POS, but I suspect that I had a Friday bike given everyone else's feedback.
On the other hand, my 600cc Transalp has had a solid thrashing from at least three KB'ers (ThePom, Transalper and me) and is now at 80,000 odd km. It burns the tiniest amount of oil, but otherwise is rock solid.

My 1995 R1100gs has 60k Miles on it (100,000 km) and feels anything but tired. It's had a new clutch and a couple of bits and bobs though. When I ride it I get the feeling that it was built to last a very long time. On ADV rider there are riders with 400k plus MILES on their r1100gs's.. Cool.

i had an old xr250 twin shock that made it round the clock with not so much as a set of rings,
i beleive its still running to this day,
the bmw singles are essentially just rotax lumps, the 650 was just a water cooled and stroked version of the 500,
and the 500 was based on the yamaha xt500, so there should be no reason why the old xt500s and 600s should be up to the same milage

Yea, I agree 100% on the BMW 800 GS.... But, as my teenage son would say "dad that is stupid money"...

But, if money was no object! That is what I would ride...hands down...period

So, I am limping along on my slow but, show KLR..........no need for speed....it isn't there!
