View Full Version : Turnout to MTA ride to work day Wellington

I went to the event in Wellington (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2381&day=2010-2-12&c=0) this morning and counted 56 bikes (incl 2 cops) at 8.00am. There were plenty of prizes given out so the odds of getting one were high. Almost more dealers, food stands etc than bikes.
Why such a low number of bikes? One reason I can offer is there would be no on street parking left in the city after the event. Now if they offered free parking there all day following the event numbers could have been in the hundreds!

Maybe because most people riding to work would have to start work at 8am?

I think the weather put a lot of people off. I came in this morning from the Akatarawas and it was raining VERY heavily, right through to lower hutt. But Wellington was perfect. Odd. Would have turned up if it wasn't so wet. Call me soft, but prefer to choose good weather to ride in if possible.

Two reasons I wasn't there. 1. I would have been late for work and more disappointingly 2. My bikes off the road at the moment.

Did anyone notice the extra cop cars on the motorway this morning?
Not targetting bikes by any chance...

Had one down here in little ole Oamaru, about 40 or so bikes, not a bad do,local bike shop put on a BBQ breakfast etc.Only thing that spoilt it was the bullshit we had to listen to from our local MP re the ACC.

I was surprised at the low turn out
I only found out about it because I worked in a different building than I normally do and have to go past the motorbike parking spot to exit - there were fliers attached to the bikes.
I double checked on here and it was listed as an event but there was no discussion thread.
anyway - yay for the hi-viz gear I won

I didn't know it was on either.
I might have turned up if I knew (usually a bit slow in the mornings and just manage to scrape into work sometime around 9).

i heard one ad on the rock and that was it,
but the fact it was at 8am. well i had already been at work for an hour by that stage,
may be mta people start work at 9 but people who live in real life start work at 8 or 7,
i would perhaps have gone if it had been at 7 and just turned up to work late,

Hell, no I work in an office job for the Govt. I choose to work my hours of 6.30 - 3.30 as to avoid traffic and have time to ride after work while those other people are still working!

I went along for a look.
The free breakfast was nice but I was a bit disappointed at the low turnout.
The weather was fine in the city, only started getting rained on on the way into the Hutt

Excellent turnout for Oamaru's first event. I saw it advertised in the local free paper and intended to go (even though Oamaru is over an hour away and I had to ask my boss for time off), but then my dog had a vet emergency and there was no biking at all that day for me. Good on ya, 98tls! Pity about Jacqui Dean, the silly moo. Did you get a prize?

I did'nt know about it.... bit of a bummer eh. Would have been cool. Work starts at 7.30 for me too but would have pulled it off somehow.
Going for a walk tommorow though down to parliment for sure!
