I spoke to Jenni at Sportzfotoz at the Nats round at levels about this as 1st round of Junior cup is also at this meet. She said that she had just verified with SMCC (Mr Smart) and that it was /is 7th March......... they had brought it forward to try and get better weather (if that is poss at teretoga)!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven,t heard any different and have booked accomodation for that weekend

They mentioned the SI cup was on the 7th March (next meeting) at riders breifing today, at Teretonga today. Looks like the SMCC website is a little out of date.

Thanks for the clarification guys! That is a relief, I remember 4 years ago the first round of south island cup was first weekend of June. The day started out nice, then a southerly front hit about midday. Temp was 0 degrees and it was serious rain. I only just managed to get home with around 100mm of snow in places. That was the weekend the massive snow hit timaru/ashburton area. Teretonga in winter is not very fun!

John Smart, who is now in charge of the road racing in Southland, rang me a few hours ago.
He said the meeting on 7th March is cancelled. IE No bike meeting on that day. Various reasons etc.
He's undecided when the SI Cup Teretonga might be held, but possibly 18th April. This would make it
round 2, a week after round 1 at Levels. I had further discussion with Motorcycling Canterbury Secretary,
who feels ALL the dates might now be in question.
Wait patiently for more info!

The problem (one of them) with winter dates at Teretonga is the beautiful blue sky weather Southland
gets. With it comes hard frosts, which is a bit tricky to race on. The trees to the North West of the loop
get higher every year, shading the second half of the loop worse every year. Sometimes it's midday
before the track has thawed out.
A few years ago I was looking after a large group of about 25 youngsters down there for the
Sportz Fotoz Cup. Because most needed to get away early back to Chch, their class practice was up first,
about 10am. I was dicking around as usual so by the time i got out many had done 2 laps and i was
horrified to finmd the whole second half of the loopp pure white with frost, with all the skinny track lines througfh it. i thought I'd better rush back and call for a red flag, as it was much too dangerous.
But as i went round I reconsidered, after all most had gone over it twice quite successfully, obviuosly their judgement and skill was spot on.
After coming in, about ten minutes later there was lot of commotion and the posties / clubman class
were coming in after a red flag incident. Oops, I forgot to say anything (about the hazard) to race organisers before this class of THE EXPERIENCED LOCALS went out. Apparently it resembled the scene in the
Blues Brothers where the crashed cop cars were all stacked up on top of each other!
The track was declared unsafe and no one went on for another 90 minutes untill the frost melted!

Ahhh fuggit! I was looking forward to a march meeting at Teretonga, good probability of some nice weather. April could be a little more marginal. Fingers crossed they get it sorted out.
Any idea when the ruapuna round may be? I'm guessing they may wait till Sept or so?

I just got off phone with John too so have put a thread up with cancellation in it. Guess I will have to try get to Ruapuna on the 6th March instead.
Thanks for heads up guys!
