El cheapo radar detector I bought off'n tard-me seems to have expired...ominously silent most of the time. Sometimes picks up random door machines but really does appear to be either dead or dying quickly.
Common or not?

Dunno, to be honest.
It didn't cost a lot and it has modified my road speed so I guess it did the job. Just a pity its dying though - once the chirps stop I daresay the behaviour modification might revert...

It's not worth getting it repaired if it's only a cheap one. Spend $1000 and buy a really good one. It's a small price to pay for keeping your licence.

I figure if gas kills it, then its a gas detector. :)

Almost as cheap as not speeding by such an extent that you could loose your licence.

It's easy enough to get into licence losing territory on the open road on my 250, I can't imagine how hard it would be trying to keep under 141kmh on a modern (ish) 600cc+ bike when you're trying to have fun. Those demerits for 'minor' speeding offences add up as well.

Given that my bird won't go anywhere near any bike that I am(supposedly) in control of, that ain't a problem for me, Ixion...

Stop speeding in the city centre then. They're 50km/h roads for a reason.

When I said 'open road' I was meaning 100kmh roads. I've had the speedo over 180kmh on that (on a private road which is closed to members of the public just for liability reasons) and it was still pulling. Not bad for a 4 stroke 250cc bike.

Try doing a factory re-set boot up. (usually by holding down a couple of buttons while you hit the on button)
It may do a self calibration and go back to its old self.
Worth a try anyhow.

Ah, you could've said it. I thought it's as opposed to closed roads.
