yip, got one on my gixxer, seems to work ok, havnt missed any cops so far.... Only issue i have with it is it doesnt tell you what direction the sinal is coming from. Bluetooth earpiece works well but only really see the leds at night. Tidy mount and wiring. I bought mine in from usa as cheaper than buying local unfortunately.

WHat's the range like wynw? One online review questioned this aspect of them...

And yes, they ARE cheaper from US. Who'd you get yours from?

seems to pick up Ka from 1-1.5 km with out any problem unless they are using them properly. The new speed camera's, pretty much on top of them when it goes off(similar to my valentine1). I bought mine direct from TPX, great communication and fast delivery. Got stung with gst going through customs so it now is a navigational device for my business!!! Will try and upoad an install photo once i figure out how to do it.

just be cearfull tho, detectors sold by radar direct are tuned for NZ, some imports may not be.

Radar directs price isnt to bad, I have the Escort 8500 and Redline, like the V1 and Bel STI they are a cool $1000 add on the $400 for a HARD system (wirelessLED light in the helmet) this TPX is well priced, but I choos the other as I swap them between cages, dont know if you can with the TPX

Direct from TPX is considerably cheaper, dangerous.

From what I can work out, there is no difference between the Radar Direct version and the original from TPX. Oh and you can swap the TPX to a car as well - there is a car mount available for them and a car power cord.

"Made for NZ conditions" means they have turned off X band in software.Something you can do yourself.

Apparently there is someone in Nelson selling Valentine 1's for a good price.Around $850

Well. So much for "cheaper from the USofA..."

When I totalled up all the bits I needed and didn't need, added freight and then converted $us to $nz, it is actually cheaper to go through Radar Direct! So I did. Not only is it cheaper, but I get to enjoy that warm fuzzy glow from having supported a New Zild firm as well as peace of mind should it explode when I hook it up.

Done. Thanks to all for your feedback on this item.

Yeah, like when radar direct had the "gold edition" V1 that was just a normal one in a gold box!

slofox

Including freight, about $715. No mount included - I'll have a look first and see if I can fake one myself.

Compare that to $785 from Adaptiv and $765 from 1stradardetectors.com. Better to stay home this time.

Got mine from R-direct

I like it because it's waterproof so no extra cover required.

The light is ok but the wireless speaker is much better the only problem i've found with it is it seems to pull the sheathing off wire. Thought it was me not being carefull but bought another and it's doing the same even though I was very carefull with it. Also the LED display has come loose from unit.

Make sure you keep wire as secure as possible.

Saying that, unit works good and don't ride/drive without it......

Guy at R-direct said Valentine a better unit, but more expensive. I wanted waterproof.

Saved me enough to be worth the money.

You have an ear piece and bright LEDs to warn you. (which you can adjust for night riding as they are bright)
So if your battery goes flat for your ear piece you still have the LEDS to warn you. (I do carry a spare batt)

What sort of battery life do you get with the headset? I am having to replace the battery after about 4 - 6 hours runtime. Which seems incredibly short. I would have expected a lot more than that. I have asked Radar Direct about this and Graeme is asking Wayne for an opinion. Any comments?

If its anything like the H.A.R.D system you need to switch it off after each day but you should be able to sxpect 12-24hrs I would think.

I switch it off every time. After a week it just won't start the headset up even though the battery still reads 3.2V...and measures "full" on a battery meter...

slofox

I use a CR2450 (3v) from Dick Smith.
I guess I would get over 3 times that.
I found that you are best to have the Switch part on the side of your helmet and the same side as the radar and not at the back as it does not work as well from there.

Hope that helps.

I am currently trying out a DSE battery - will let you know how it goes.

I have the switch on the side of the helmet but is opposite side from the detector. I have the Interphone on that side so I guess it'll have to stay as it is...goddam helmet has little blue flashing lights all over it...

EDIT: Incidentally, the TPX picked up a copper on the opposite side of the road ahead this morning from about 1500m out. He had some cager pulled over and had obviously left the radar on. Better range than the old cobra had...

slofox
12th March 2010, 18:44
Yeah they are not a bad wee unit, you may have noticed that it is hard to tell how close the cop is?
That is my main complaint about the radar.

Having come from an el cheapo Cobra, I don't really have much to compare with. The Cobra didn't have as good a range anyway.

But the TPX doesn't really accelerate the beep rate until you get quite close - I have noticed that. I am more interested in overall range anyway since I tend to react to the first chirp I hear (or see).

Funny thing - a detector in my car has resulted in my average highway speed dropping about 5km/hr. But this hasn't happened on the bike yet...funny that...

It goes shit. Put it in on Monday morning. Was foobahed by yesterday afternoon...worst run yet.

Have just bought ten Maxell batteries off'n Tard Me at just under $3.00 each - as opposed to $7.00 each from DSE. Will see how they go...

Still seems to be a very short battery life to me...

Cary
13th March 2010, 12:56
Yes, very.

I use the ones from DSE and have much better life than that.

Once I got in the habbit of turning it off (took about 3 batteries!) I'd say I'd get 25-30 hrs out of a battery

Maybe ask for another unit?

I am beginning to lean towards that idea...(another unit).

I always turn it off. This week I think I may have got about 4 - 6 hours running out of the DSE battery. Adaptiv reckon you should get about 20 hours of activation and 60 hours on standby. I sure as hell am not getting that much...

FYI I took my TPX into RadarDirect today as the LED display had come loose (ie floppying around inside the case) and he told me there is no way to fix it. He, as the agent said they tried getting into one before and ended up breaking it and had to replace it.

Only a matter of time before the display stops working due to vibration  Unit is only 16 months old.......

Detector now buggered, LED screen fades in and out and warnings go off all the time, even in my garage! (about 20 months old)

Took it to Radar Direct in Mt Wellington and was told no way to fix it and would not even attempt to fix/send it away. Was happy to sell me another unit tho......

Said no other units have had this problem and now that i'm used to having one am going to give another one a go as when it was working it did work well(false confidence maybe:laugh:)

Last chance or I'm gonna have to slow down......

Not that much but not cheap either. If i didn't have the 999 i wouldn't have bothered but I end up going fast everywhere on it, makes me feel better.

Went out y-day and didn't have the (false)confidence to go the speed I wanted to to make things fun!

I'd rather pay for a detector than traffic tickets let alone points.

I'd say it's saved me a least a couple of tickets, car & bike.

New unit cost me $400, that lasts another 2 years i'd say it was worth it so long as i don't get any tickets!

That was just the unit itself, no LED or ear piece, mounts etc. Prolly got a little off as i got the last one from him.

TPX has proven good, no complaints with picking up cops, speed cameras.

Oh, and it's waterproof so no extra cover required, why i didn't get a Valentine.

T'anx.

I bought one from USA and I don't know if it is set up different to NZ sold ones but it was useless really. Speed camera flashed me at the same time as I was alerted. OK so maybe you need a top of the line model to detect speed cameras.
Mine wouldn't give enough warning even from a cop at 50 meters. Bottom line is the concept is great but the range it covers is bottom of the line.

With the new K band in cameras you wont get a warning till ya on top of it, they have a very low power thingie.
At 50mts the radar will proberly have been on stand by, so dont through ya unit in the trash just yet, I have also noted of a late they are using the radars diferently that being they keep them turned of.

Hmm... i have noticed exact opposite that lots of cops keep their in car radar on all them time, especialy around auckland (but did a Dunedin to Auckland trip last week and lots of south island cops had the Ka band on as well)
But thanks for letting me know about the K band i currently have it turned off on my RX65 (automatic door alerts are annoying) so was wondering why it didnt beep when going past camera van the other day...

Quite what I have been saying all along.
Invest a bit more in a decent detector. Better detection capabilities of cars and camera van units.
Bel or V1.

Adaptiv Technologies tell me they are releasing a version 2 of the TPX late this year.

Be interesting to see if sensitivity is improved.

Do you have sensitivity isues? false's?

False alarms? Well it picks up all the door openers etc if you leave those bands open. Not too many Ka false alarms I'd have to say. There's the odd one around here that regularly sounds off for no apparent reason - always in the same places. I learn to ignore those. I really can't find a radar copper in my own drive for a start even though I do get a signal there from time to time.

I believe the TPX could be more sensitive than it is. From what I read, the top models give an alarm much further out than the TPX does. But I have not tried them side by side so it is going on hearsay to say that.

However, I have yet to have it miss a genuine radar alert and have had it react at near 180 degrees offline, which ain't bad.

It's pretty useless against the new mobile cameras, reacting as you pull alongside the van. Have to rely on the eyeball test for those.

Typical TPX range about 800 - 1000m - seems to vary with circumstances - traffic etc. Estimate only here - I've never measured it. Be worth doing I suppose - maybe on one of the fixed corner warning sites or somesuch although they don't use Ka...
