I've been thinking about applying for a job as an Astronaut.

Does anyone know what the hours are, and how much it pays?

Isn't it spelt "astronaut"?

Check on that - they might ask you to spell it on the application form.

EDIT: Bollocks - someone's changed the spelling.

Not much call for them these days. Obama's made them all redundant.

You can really clock up the hours, what with passing through various times zones etc. So when it comes to overtime, I've heard that the sky isn't the limit.

Nahhhhh ... wouldn't bother ...

Bugger all fresh air when you're working ...
Away from home a lot ...months at a time...
Training course takes years ...
FOOD is shit ...
Some degree of bodily harm on the job ... (some don't survive training)
Pay ain't that bad ...
You lose weight when you're working ... (but put it on again when you get home)
Often months between jobs ... (more training courses)
You can go to great heghts ... plenty of travel too ... (no air points though)
But you get to see the world from a whole different perspective ...

He's right you know. The shuttle programme is getting scrapped soon... going back to the moon isn't happening now.

If you want to become an astronaut then move to Asia.

It's a hectic life apparently. Aboard the International Space Station they have around 50 minutes of daylight, followed by about 40 minutes of darkness. By the time you've had a shave and breakfast, your day would be shagged really...

Don't they give them eye shades to put on like in business class?

I was at Kennedy Space Center last month just before launch and here's a pic of the module they were taking up to the space station. Its complete with bay window which they were to move from the end to the side once it got there - didn't fit in the shuttle bay if attached in the right place - and that's what they had trouble with the bolts on once they got it up there. Anyway now the inhabitants of the space station will have a better view.

i reckon it would be an interesting job to a degree but there must be large degrees of boredom stuck in such small spaces and no room to ride.

Florida was concerned about employment - the loss of forward programme meant the loss of 1,500 skilled jobs.

Go for your dream! If it's possible for some young lads to become Olympic figure skaters, then flaming oneself into orbit should be a doddle.

I was an astronaut once, never got to terms with the gravity of the situation, used to float in and out at will, and was eventually fired for continually hanging around.
