View Full Version : Tinted visor - an opinion

Had the tinted visor just over a month now.
In case anyone is wondering what they are like, as I was before I bought one, here is a quick opinion.
I was initially worried about getting one that was too dark but I ended up getting the dark smoke version anyway (Arai helmet, BTW). I was concerned about the effect a dark tint might have when going from bright areas into shadow - thought it might make it harder to see into the darker zone.
Not so.
If anything, it makes the transition easier. The tint seems to lower the contrast across the board and therefore makes such transitions easier to deal with. So my fears were unfounded.
Much easier overall in most conditions - even under the sort of overcast skies we have had for the last two weeks. Can make the world seems a little grey and depressing at times but the bike ride usually cures that anyway...:devil2:
Glad I bought it. Haven't used the clear one since.

I got the dark smoke version for my Arai helmet. Found it excellent during the day even in low light such as early morning or evening/cloudy days. Certainly wouldnt wear it down at night though..... terrible for that.

I too got the dark smoke one. The only time I use the clear is at night. I have been caught with only the dark visor at night, had to ride with it up.

I have a very dark mirror/tinted visor which I find to be great as I wear glasses, and find sunglasses with a clear visor horrible. I have a clear visor for night.
SOmeone told me that people find the tinted visors threatening, bummer for them, I find it much easier to see with one in the bright sunlight

I first heard of the 'Safety Glasses' thing from Big Dave, never tried it out but I can see how it could be effective.
I have a tinted visor but choose to use the clear. I should alternate.

I'm thinking about buying a tinted visor but that would be a real cunt to ride with at night. Or in tunnels. I wear my sun glasses under a clear visor which leads to me seeing all sorts of trippy colours. The real problem with that is that the sunnies tend to get pushed into my eyes at high-ish speeds and it's not a comfortable feeling.

Is easy to have a pair handy, unless your have good bag to carry your other vissor in, not the easiest things to carry and you don't want it getting scracthed, pair of glasses easy to slip into a jacket pocket. Only change your vissour IF you know for sure you will be riding in the dark for some extended time etc... imo it is indeed whatever tickles your thing on how to deal with it :)
In saying all that daylight saving is ending soon... hmmm so darker earlier

I just sling my clear one around my ribs inside my jacket. Don't even know it's there.
They are shaped to fit there just nicely.

I like the look of the tinted visor, my new shoei came with one. SInce i wear correcting lenses that get dark in the light I wont be using it.

With a 'blue ice' headlamp replacement I can get by at night with a dark visor at night, found that out once, but change to clear visor if planned.

The other option of a second internal tinted visor works very well. I have one from HLD (not an expensive brand or anything) but it works beautifully.
If I leave home to work early in the morning while its darkish- no problem. As soon as the sun peeps out and blinds the crap out of you (especially if it reflects off a wet road!) - also no problem! Just slide it down.

I have the same type of lenses Ratti but have no problem with the tinted visor...specs just don't darken up. Prefer the tinted visor all the way.

The "trippy colours" thing is a result of using polarized lenses. You don't get this if your sunnies use non-polarized lenses.
I used to get the effect when I used polarized clip-on sunnies on my prescription glasses. Since getting prescription (non-polarized) sunnies, the issue has gone away

You can get those auto-adjust fog-city inserts. Great!, not so dark at night.

Something like this is available from most safety shops. I've been using them for years but they are mainly for night or foggy mornings.

I tried the tinted visor/safety glasses' thing on Sunday, my Safety's are slightly tinted also and somehow things are very clear? I do have the strip of tape across the top of my helmet also, which helps hugely when riding into the sun.

I tuck a clear visor around my ribs inside the jacket. Then it's there as a spare/post sunset visor when needed.

If I am only carrying the one visor, it would be the tint. Got caught out once on an overcast day, got very dark, pissed down with rain. No problem, took the clear. The sun came out, I went almost completely blind from all the reflections.
I don't have a problem with riding with a tinted visor at night, I do it almost every day. Tunnels, lift it up, but otherwise, no problem, if anything, more relaxing and car headlights are dulled, so everything is just a few shades darker.

When i was into my mountain biking the orange tints were awesome for going in and out of shadows. Never tried one on the bike but been in a few situations where would have been good. Look out, cliff.

Yeah BD gave me that hint too. Safety's go with on a long or late afternoon putt.

Most (maybe all ) polycarbonate visors block UV radiation which most photochromic lenses need to cause them to darken. You can get newer (more expensive) lenses that will darken without UV though.
The Caberge helmets with internal visors are useful . I use a pair of cheap ($45) safety sunnies with prescription lenses in them and my clear visor for daytime riding. I often end up riding in the dark and bright sunshine and couldn't be bothered carrying an extra visor around.

Fully agree with that, the only thing i find is it makes paedestrians hard to see when they cross the road...otherwise i never have an issue. the eyes adjust to the reduced light and you don't notice it. just don't keep opening and closing the visor, that wil stuff up you night vision. if it's down, keep it down

:bleh: I work weird hours, regularly into the early hours, so "day" is used in the sense of 24 hours. Night/day the only difference is night time I get less phone calls, so I can work more productively. :D

Just bought an iridium visor for the arai.
Good points: It looks like the dogs lickable bits, I have also heard that is a bit better in low light situations than a tinted visor.
Bad points: It picks up fingerprints if you so much as think about touching it and you also get a reflection of your face on the inside of the visor when its really sunny.
Overall: It looks cool, cost lots and not quite as good as a tinted visor in strong sunshine. If I could make the choice again I would probably buy a dark tint visor instead.
